Lets start with a review of the way subtraction works.
Always remember that subtraction is about taking away.
Youre sitting and waiting for a bus. You look down and see a pattern on a tile floor. Sudedenly someone comes along and covers some tiles.
You look at the
floor and see patterns. Some tiles are
covered up. Fewer tiles
visible.
Sometimes you will need to subtract shapes.
Start with nine (9)
geometric shapes. You are told to subtract five (5) triangles.
And its up to you to figure out that
only four (4) are left.
And of course there is the number line.
You would be given a starting point of one value. When you are told to subtract, you skip along the number line to the left.
If you start with nine (9) and subtract six (6). What value do you have?

Usually you will subtract with numbers. You need to subtract when you see a dash - symbol between two numbers. Addition happens when you see the + symbol.

When you subtract single digit numbers from triple
digit numbers you need to start with the ones, move to the tens, and finish with the hundreds column.

the ones. Then bring the tens column down.
Youre actually doing three subtraction problems. The first is for the ones column, the second for the tens, and you finish the problems with the hundreds. The tens and hundreds columns subtraction are subtracting zero (0).
