Let’s start with a review of the way subtraction works.

Always remember that subtraction is about taking away.

You’re sitting and waiting for a bus. You look down and see a pattern on a tile floor. Sudedenly someone comes along and covers some tiles.

You look at the

floor and see patterns. Some tiles are

covered up. Fewer tiles

visible.

Sometimes you will need to subtract shapes.

Start with nine (9)

geometric shapes. You are told to subtract five (5) triangles.

And it’s up to you to figure out that

only four (4) are left.

And of course there is the number line.

You would be given a starting point of one value. When you are told to subtract, you skip along the number line to the left.

“If you start with nine (9) and subtract six (6). What value do you have?”

Usually you will subtract with numbers. You need to subtract when you see a dash “-” symbol between two numbers. Addition happens when you see the “+” symbol.
