MASS INTENTIONS

The Sun and the Son

Maybe it’s just me, but it seems like the sun has been a rare commodity this winter. I can generally tolerate the cold (within reason), but only if it is sunny. The sun brings a warmth that can penetrate even the coldest of days.

Without the sun, I find it difficult to find something to warm me in the same way. Yes, I can drink hot beverages or maybe take a warm shower, but it is just not quite the same.

In our gospel today, Jesus gives us some images of what his followers mean to the world. They (we) are the salt of the earth and a light to the world. But those images come with some cautions too. Once salt loses its taste, it really isn’t good for anything, and a light does not do any good when it is hidden.

These images should be challenges for us.

What are we doing to make sure that we retain our “flavor” for Jesus? Do we rely on just coming to Mass, or do we seek other avenues to help keep our faith strong? And what about our light? Do we let it shine for others, or do we tend to hide our light for fear of being seen by others as a Christian?

The world needs us. Those that do not see the light coming from us will try to find some other light. We are like the sun on a winter’s day. We can radiate the warmth and light of Christ to those who are shivering in the darkness of their lives and really make a difference to those in need. Do not be afraid to let your light shine brightly to others! It may be exactly what they need to keep them warm!

FORMED/PARISH

St. Bernard Parish Bishop’s Appeal Goal is $52,268

There is such a heightened interest in the use of podcasts in our tech-savvy world. Did you know that there are numerous podcasts available in FORMED?

Go into FORMED.org and type in “podcasts” in the search icon (bottom little magnifying glass) and hit search. Again, there are numerous podcasts you can listen to that might open up your desire to seek more.

For example, listen to the 12 Stories about Aquinas with Peter Krefeld.

Very easy listening, and if you want to delve a bit deeper, there is a link to all 12 stories in full episodes.

Maybe for Lent try something new...?

Listen to a podcast each day driving to/from work, while waiting to pick up children from school, or even listen with them in the car.

Just a thought.

Submitted weekly by a St. Bernard Parishioner

In October 2018, we introduced a new dynamic online platform called FORMED. Many of our parishioners have used this as a resource to access Catholic e-books, videos and movies on any device, including your computer, smartphone and tablet. With FORMED you’ll find videos that explain the Catholic faith, explore the deepest meaning of relationships, receive bible studies on a variety of topics and include inspiring audio talks. Let the journey begin; give it a try this Lent.

Care Ministers Reach Out to Those in Need

There are more than 1,400 Care Ministers serving our parishes in the Diocese of Green Bay. A Care Minister is a volunteer who is trained to go out and listen, understand, support and pray with people in need of support during times of transition in their lives. These volunteers respond to the spiritual and emotional needs of the bereaved, hospitalized, terminally ill, separated, divorced, unemployed, or those facing some personal crisis.

Becoming a Care Minister is not a simple undertaking. It requires training, leadership, and continuing education. Your support of the Bishop’s Appeal enables members in your parish to be trained as Care Ministers, and allows those hurting in your parish to receive pastoral care.

At St. Bernard, we currently have 15 trained and active Care Ministers that provide their care ministry skills to parishioners in need.

Your gift to the Bishop’s Appeal allows you to reach out and care for hurting people across our 16-county diocese. To make a gift today, contact your parish or visit the Bishop’s Appeal website at

www.catholicfoundationgb.org/give.

PARISH LIFE

St. Bernard Paschal Candle PROCLAIM THE GOSPEL

The Paschal Candle is one of the most sacred and enduring symbols of the Light of Christ.

Our candle this year is called, “Proclaim the Gospel.”

In Christian symbolism, the square represents the four corners of the earth as well as the four Evangelists. These bands of squares, each square encompassing a cross, is a reminder to us to spread the Good News throughout our lives, wherever we go.

This Paschal Candle may be purchased in memory of a loved one; please call Rhonda at 920.739.0331 or email [email protected].

The cost for the candle is approximately $260.
