St. Matthew’s Women’s Club Ministry Report

As a result of Bishop Barnes’ Episcopal Visit in October 2017, the Pastoral Council visited many ministries in our parish. Our goal is to complete all visits by the end of December 2018 and in the new year we will be continuing the process of revitalizing our parish by organizing and prioritizing the input, suggestions and feedback we received for possible implementation. Today I am sharing the Pastoral Council Report on the visit we had with the St. Matthew’s Women’s Club:

Respectfully Submitted by: Leanne Perez June 1, 2018

1. What is the mission of your ministry?

The Women’s Club is a fraternal organization fostering a spirit of unity among the women of St. Matthew’s Church. Its primary purposes are social and spiritual activities among its members. Its secondary purpose is to serve the varied needs of the parish community, including fundraising.

2. Why did you choose this ministry?

To be more engaged in the Church. The mission had the word “women” in it. Meet women of my faith and develop friendships. Interaction with other people. Christmas card project for seniors. To join with other women in the Catholic faith to do good works. Sharing being Catholic in a secular world. Ministry Fair. Grew up Catholic and all churches had a Women’s Club.

3. What are the blessings/challenges you have found with this ministry?

Blessings: Friendships, Service Projects, more women active/social interaction, meeting good friendly Christian wom- en, help earn money for the parish and community, joy, laughter, humor, Gateway ministry, serving needs of parish and women’s retreats.

Challenges: Members not at monthly meetings consistently. Better internal communication.

4. In what ways does this ministry serve or represent St. Matthew’s Parish?

Helps with activities and as parish needs arise.

5. What are your hopes for our community and parishioners here at St. Matthew’s Parish?

Increase participation in ministries and church activities especially the young.

6. Do you have any suggestions/ideas about what we can do together to improve our parish/community?

More activities for the young (ex. Skating, bowling, etc.). Ministry Coordinator/Ministry Council. Focus Group on what worked well in the past.

7. Is there anything you need from the Pastoral Council? Open Door Policy.

I would also like to take a moment to welcome Fr. Hieu back from his sabbatical. We missed you, Fr. Hieu and are happy you are back with us safe! I would also like to thank Fr. Hien for taking the reins of Interim Pastor and doing such a great job while Fr. Hieu was away. And finally, I would like to thank Fr. Loreto Pereira, SVD for answering the call to come from Ecuador to our parish to assist Fr. Hien. We are truly blessed by the Society of Divine Word Priests (SVDs) and the work that they do for us. Wishing all parishioners, a great Christmas and New Year filled with happiness and many blessings! Hope to see you at our Christmas Eve/Christmas Day masses!

Sincerely, Leanne Perez, President St. Matthew’s Pastoral Council

Reflecting on God’s Word

One of the all-time great Christmas movies is It’s a W onderful Life! The classic scene is the final one. The townspeople are gathering in George Bailey’s living room. They’re pouring money onto a table, all with the in- tention of rescuing George from financial ruin. It’s not long before George’s brother enters the picture. Having heard of the hard times George had been going through, he secured a leave from the military, hopped a plane, and flew all day and night to make it to Bedford Falls. He wanted to be of help. Seeing the people and the mountain of money, he raises his glass and toasts his brother, “the richest man in the world!”

George Bailey was rich, all right, but not because he was suddenly inundated with money. He was rich because he had family and friends who loved him and cared about him. There’s much to be said for the benefits and bless- ings of family.

Religious Education

Youth Ministry

January 18-21, 2019 Big Bear Lake, CA

We are looking for adults willing to volunteer on Tuesday evenings directing traffic for our Religious Education program. We have over 250 kids attend class this evening and the parking lot needs to be safe for them. The time would be from about 5:45pm – 6:15pm. Safety gear will be provided. Our parish children’s safety is very important and we need to make sure that they get to class safely and the parents who drive them are given clear directions on safe drop off proce- dures.

God, thank you for a new year. May everyone in our family be willing to begin anew with a clean slate. We know that you are always ready to forgive us. Help us to be willing to forgive ourselves and to forgive one another.

As we begin a new year, re- mind us of our truest values and our deepest desires. Help us to live in the goodness that comes from doing what you want us to do. Help us to put aside anxiety about the future and the past, so that we might live in peace with you now, one day at a time.

It’s fun to celebrate stuff isn’t it? Especially around the beginning of the new year! There are holidays, birthdays, sporting events, and so much more.

What about how we celebrate? We have parties, give presents, eat cake for birthdays. We spend time with family during the holidays. Guess what?!?

We can also celebrate what God is doing in our lives. We can celebrate all he’s done for us in the past, what he is doing right now, and what he will be doing in the upcoming year.

The Bible tells us to be thankful in ALL circumstances. Not just the ones that make us happy or feel good. But we can find good in bad situations too.

Taking time to reflect on what we’re thankful for is the key to being grate- ful in all circumstances.

1 Peter 1:6-7

“So be truly glad. There is wonderful joy ahead, even though you must en-

dure many trials for a little while. These trials will show that your faith is

genuine. It is being tested as fire tests and purifies gold—though your faith

is far more precious than mere gold. So when your faith remains strong

through many trials, it will bring you much praise and glory and honor on

the day when Jesus Christ is revealed to the whole world.”

Sinceramente,

Leanne Pérez, Presidenta del Consejo Pastoral de San Mateo Reflexionemos sobre la Palabra de Dios

Una de las películas estadounidenses más famosas de todos los tiempos para el tiempo de Navidad es It’s a Wonderful Life! (“¡Qué bello es vivir!”). La escena clásica sucede al final. La gente del pueblo está reunida en la sala de George Bailey. Están tirando dinero sobre una mesa con la intención de rescatar a George de una ruina financiera. No pasa mucho tiempo cuando entra en acción el her- mano de George. Él se había enterado de las dificultades por las que estaba atravesando George y pidió un permiso del ejército;
