THE KICKOFF

›› The University of Louisville men’s soccer closes out the regular season on Friday night at No. 15 Clemson. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET and will be televised on the ACC Network.

›› The Cardinals picked up goals from Pedro Fonseca and Aboubacar Camara on their way to a 2-1 victory over NC State in the regular season home finale. UofL finished off the regular season 9-2-0 on its home field.

›› Louisville has already clinched a share of the ACC Atlantic Division title heading into Friday’s match. It marks the first division title for UofL since joining the ACC in 2014 after having finished second in the Atlantic on three previous occasions. The Cardinals would win the division outright with a win or draw at Clemson and would claim the No. 1 seed in the ACC Championship with a win.

›› Louisville and Clemson will square off for the ninth time on Friday night with the Tigers leading the all-time series 4-3-1. The Cardinals defeated then No. 1 Clemson 2-1 in April at Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium. Carlos Sanchis scored five minutes into the match and Aboubacar Camara added a second early in the second half. Detre Bell finished with eight saves on the night.

2nd Season John Michael Hayden, a Louisville native who served as an assistant coach with the Cardinals for four seasons, was named head coach of the University of Louisville men’s soccer program by UofL Vice-President/Director of Athletics Vince Tyra on Dec. 27, 2018.

Hayden became the fifth head coach in the history of the UofL men’s soccer program, which completed its 40th season in 2018. In two seasons at the helm, he has compiled a 15-16-3 record and a 8-10-2 mark in ACC play.

Dealing with the challenges of playing during the COVID-19 pandemic, Hayden’s second season saw the Cardinals post a 5-8-1 overall mark split across the fall and spring semesters. Battling a bevy of injuries, UofL went just 1-6- 1 during the fall portion of the season, but rebounded in the spring and posted a 4-2-0 record and finished second in the ACC Atlantic Division. The Cardinals capped off the spring season with a 2-1 victory over No. 1 Clemson in the regular season finale. Elijah Amo and Pedro Fonseca were each named to the All-ACC teams, while Aboubacar Camara was the conference’s leading scorer during the spring and earned All-Freshman laurels. Amo (Real Salt Lake) and Lamine Conte (New York Red Bulls) were both selected in the MLS SuperDraft in January of 2021, becoming Louisville’s 24th and 25th all-time selections, while Jake Gelnovatch inked a professional deal with USL Championship club Memphis 901 FC.

In his first season at the helm, Hayden led the Cardinals to a 10-8-2 overall record and a 3-4-1 record in ACC play. The Cards handed eventual national champion Georgetown its only loss of the season with a 1-0 double overtime victory at Lynn Stadium. Hayden became the first Louisville head coach to lead the Cardinals to a pair of NCAA wins in their first season, including an upset of No. 14 UC Davis. The Cards qualified for the NCAA Tournament for the fourth straight year. The Cardinals advanced to the third round of the NCAA Tournament for the third time in the last four years and the seventh time in the last 10 seasons. Under Hayden, Cherif Dieye was named to the All-ACC Second Team and was named a United Soccer Coaches All-South Region Second Team. Dieye became UofL’s 23rd player chosen all-time in the MLS SuperDraft and the seventh player to be drafted in the first round.

In three seasons as an assistant at UofL from 2016-18, the Cardinals 38-13-10 overall. Louisville registered its first ACC Championship title in 2018, defeating Notre Dame, Wake Forest and North Carolina in a span of eight days to win the ACC championship.

UofL reached the NCAA Tournament in all three seasons, including national quarterfinal appearances in 2016 and 2017.

Prior to returning to Louisville, Hayden served as associate head coach at Xavier University in 2015 helping the Musketeers compile 12 wins and earn a No. 10 ranking in the NSCAA poll. XU won at No. 2 Notre Dame and No. 1 Creighton during the fall, widely considered to be the first time any team had knocked off the top two NSCAA-ranked teams on the road in the same season.

Hayden joined the Musketeers after spending two successful seasons as an assistant coach at Lipscomb University, where he helped the Bisons to a program-best 12-4-1 record and A-Sun regular season title in 2014.

Lipscomb was 21-13-3 overall during his two years in

LOUISVILLE HEAD COACH: JOHN MICHAEL HAYDEN

Nashville, racking up several conference honors in the process. Hayden trained the 2014 A-Sun Defender of the Year, Luke Gearin, and the A-Sun Freshman of the Year, Ivan Alvarado. In 2013, he mentored A-Sun Player of the Year Omar Djabi and assisted A-Sun Coach of the Year Charles Morrow – both program firsts for the Bisons.

Ahead of his two years at Lipscomb, Hayden helped lift Louisville to a 14-6-1 record, a BIG EAST Red Division regular season championship and an Elite Eight appearance in the NCAA Tournament during a highly successful 2012 season. Before his first stint with the Cardinals, Hayden served as Director of Coaching with the Kentucky Fire Juniors USYSA club, obtaining his USSF National “A” coaching license and traveling to Spain with U.S. Soccer as part of a development workshop with the international powerhouses FC Barcelona and Real Madrid.

Hayden was a decorated player before transitioning into coaching, playing collegiately at Indiana University winning back-to-back NCAA championships with the Hoosiers in 2003 and 2004. He scored an overtime header against No. 3 Maryland in the 2004 College Cup, sending IU to the title match. During his sophomore season, Hayden scored career-highs with seven goals, four assists and 18 total points -- tying for the team lead with six game-winning goals. Hayden was a Big Ten All-Conference selection in 2004 and 2006 and was named to the NCAA College Cup All-Tournament Team during the Hoosiers’ 2004 title run.

In 2007, Hayden was selected 13th overall in the MLS SuperDraft by the Houston Dynamo. His pro debut came on July 10, 2007 in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup against Charleston Battery. In his rookie season, the Dynamo won an MLS Cup Championship. He wrapped up his professional career after signing with the Louisville Lightning in January of 2010.

A two-time Parade Magazine All-American at Louisville’s Trinity High School, Hayden was named NSCAA/adidas Kentucky Player of the Year along with Gatorade and Eurosport honors. When he signed with IU, he was recognized as a top-25 recruit by Soccer America.

In 2007, Hayden married Hollie Minogue, who played soccer for Louisville’s women’s team and the couple has two sons, Liam and Jacob.

CAMARA TURNING IN ONE OF BEST SEASONS ALL-TIME AT UOFL Aboubacar Camara is in the midst of a special season at Louisville, tallying 13 goals through 15 matches this season. The forward is putting together one of the top seasons by anyone to wear the UofL uniform:

›› Leads the ACC and second nationally with 13 goals

›› First in the ACC and sixth nationally with 27 points

›› First Louisville player to score double digit goals since Mohamed Thiaw in 2016

›› His 13 goals are the third-most in a single season all-time at UofL

›› First player to score in four consecutive matches since Tim Kubel in 2014

›› First UofL player since at least 2001 to score multiple goals in consecutive matches

›› Has 18 goals in last 21 matches (scored five in six matches during 2021 spring) CAMARA, FONSECA FORM TOP-SCORING DUO

Aboubacar Camara and Pedro Fonseca have been one of the top 1-2 punches in the country this season. The Louisville forwards are currently the top scoring pair in the ACC and the country.

The duo has combined for 21 goals and eight assists this fall with Camara leading the ACC in points and Fonseca ranking second and the two sitting first and fourth in goals, respectively.

FONSECA SHOWING OUT IN SENIOR SEASON

Injuries limited Pedro Fonseca to just 16 matches over his first two seasons (2018-19) at Louisville.

However, a healthy Fonseca has been among the best players in the ACC over the last two seasons.

Dating back to the start of the 2020 season, Fonseca has tallied 12 goals and 11 assists in 29 matches. The forward set career highs in 2020 with four goals and four assists and needed just nine matches to surpass those numbers this season. Fonseca is currently second in the ACC with 23 points, including a conference-best 13 points in league play.

The Brazilian netted a pair of penalty kicks at Syracuse on Sept. 17, becoming the first Louisville player to record multiple goals in a match since Kino Ryusuke on Oct. 1, 2019 and the first with two PK goals since Mohamed Thiaw on Oct. 10, 2017.

CARDS HAVE RECORD-SETTING NIGHT AGAINST WESTERN ILLINOIS Goals came early and often for Louisville in a 7-1 victory over Western Illinois. The seven goals and 21 points were the most for the Cardinals since putting 10 on the board against Asbury on Oct.

1, 1987.

Louisville’s seven assists were the third-most in a match in program history, while the 29 shots ranked seventh all-time. The Cardinals finished with 19 shots on goal, the program’s most since at least 2001.

LOUISVILLE SPREADING THE GOAL SCORING WEALTH

While the Cardinals have been putting goals on the board in large quantities, the scoring has come from a variety of sources.

Aboubacar Camara and Pedro Fonseca have led the way with 12 and seven goals, respectively, but 12 different Cardinals have scored a goal this season with six recording multiple goals.

Macoumba Ba, Dante Huckaby, Josh Jones, Brandon McManus, Ayden Nocus and Sander Roed have all tallied their first collegiate goals this season.

ACHARA DISPLAYS SCORING PROWESS

Ugochukwu Achara transferred to Louisville for the 2021 season from Northwestern, where he was a first team All-Big Ten selection last spring after scoring five goals, the second-most among all Big Ten players.

Achara failed to score through the first five matches this fall for the Cardinals before finally breaking through in the second half at Syracuse on Sept. 17. The goal opened the floodgates for the sophomore, who scored in each of the two matches that followed against Northern Kentucky and Boston College.

Achara was the second Cardinal to score in three consecutive matches this season, joining Aboubacar Camara who did it in four straight.

BELL, CARDS DEFENSE RECORD THREE SHUTOUTS IN FOUR MATCHES While the Louisville offensive attack was lighting up the scoreboard, Detre Bell and the Cardinals defense turned in clean sheets in three of four matches during a September stretch.

The Cards blanked No. 25 Wake Forest to start a five-match winning streak and registered consecutive shutouts against Northern Kentucky and Boston College. It was the first back-to-back shutouts for the Cardinals in over two years.

Louisville limited Boston College to just three shots total and only one on target in Friday’s victory.

The three shots allowed were the fewest by an ACC opponent against Louisville since Sept. 24, 2016 when Virginia was held to just one.

The Cardinals have proven to have one of the best offensive attacks in the ACC and the country with 36 goals through 13 matches. While the majority of the goals have come during the run of play, it’s been set pieces off the foot of Sander Roed that have delivered in some of the biggest moments this season.

The freshman has assisted on five goals this season, three of which have come off set pieces. Roed found Josh Jones for the second goal against Wake Forest, and then again for the game-winner in double overtime at Syracuse. The Norwegian midfielder also found Ugochukwu Achara on a corner kick to break a scoreless tie in the 77th minute in the win over Boston College.

After a slow start to the season offensively, the Cardinals have gone on a scoring binge and have proven to be one of the top offenses in the country. Louisville tallied just five goals over the first four matches of the season, going 2-2-0 over that stretch. However, the Cardinals found the net 21 times in their next five matches, securing their first five-match winning streak since September of 2016.

Louisville put nine goals on the board in consecutive wins over Syracuse and Northern Kentucky, and then again in victories over Boston College and Western Illinois, the most in a two-match stretch since scoring 12 in matches against Asbury (10) and Transylvania (2) during the 1987 season.

The Cardinals currently lead the ACC and rank fifth in the country at 2.60 goals per match, and lead the ACC with 17 goals through seven conference matches. UofL also leads the league and ranks third nationally with 39 goals and is first in the ACC and fourth nationally with 7.33 corner kicks per match.

FRESHMEN PROVIDING IMMEDIATE IMPACT FOR CARDS

John Michael Hayden and his coaching staff signed one of the top recruiting classes in the country in 2021, a group that was ranked ninth by TopDrawerSoccer. That collection of student-athletes has stepped onto campus and provided instant impact for the Cardinals.

Sander Roed has started 11 matches in the midfield, while true freshmen are making up three- quarters of the Louisville back line. Dante Huckaby has started 14 matches in the backline, while Josh Jones and Patrick Ajdukiewicz have each started 13.

Their impact has been measurable as well. Roed is third on the team with 11 points (three goals, five assists), while Jones has a pair of goals including the game-winner in double overtime at Syracuse and Huckaby notched a double-overtime winner of his own against Bellarmine.

CARDIAC CARDS FULL OF DRAMATIC FINISHES

The 2021 Cardinals have shown a flair for the dramatics this season, with five matches being decided in the final minutes and three of them requiring two overtime periods.

After losing 2-1 on a goal in the 108th minute at Saint Louis to open the season, the Cardinals returned home and scored two goals over the final four minutes to secure a 2-1 win over Evansville and followed it with a 105th minute goal from Dante Huckaby for a double overtime win over Bellarmine. UofL then picked up a wild 5-4 double overtime win on a goal from Josh Jones in the 103rd minute at Syracuse. The Cardinals also struck twice in the final four minutes to secure a 2-0 victory over North Carolina.

FONSECA, SAMPLE NAMED 2021 TEAM CAPTAINS

DR. MARK & CINDY LYNN STADIUM

After more than a decade of playing in the Cardinal Park Track and Soccer Stadium, the Uni- versity of Louisville men’s and women’s soccer teams moved into the premiere soccer venue in the country in 2014.

Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium, a $18.5 million, state-of the-art soccer stadium features seating capacity for more than 5,300 and includes a 15,500-square-foot training center.

The natural turf field is surrounded by chairback seating for 2,300 in the main grandstand, bleacher seating for 900 in the east end zone and two berms, which can accommodate 2,100. It is the second-largest on-campus facility project the Cardinals have built.

In addition to the pitch, the complex surrounding the area is fully loaded to ensure Louisville’s student-athletes enjoy their experiences. The building features separate team locker rooms in addition to their opponents, along with coaches’ locker rooms. When they are not in competition or training, the men’s and women’s teams have the ability to spend time in their own lounge areas located in their respective locker rooms.

Also, Cardinal student-athletes and coaches will be provided an 830-square-foot meeting/video room for scouting purposes.

When Louisville is practicing or warming up before a match, they can take advantage of an ap- proximately 700-square-foot indoor warm-up area designed to give the Cardinals the maximum space for training.

For fans entering arguably the best soccer stadium in the country, they are greeted by six ticket windows, staffed by Louisville’s ticket office, to help limit long wait times. Upon gaining admission, fans will be greeted by the main concession stand that features up to 14 queues or they can stroll around the concourse that extends around the end lines.

Housed atop the grandstand at midfield, the press box has ample amounts of room and amenities to accommodate those covering the game. Adjacent to the press box is a donor suite, along with a separate television suite, radio suite, an area for the media as well as an operations room.

The Cardinals are 57-22-14 all-time at Dr. Mark and Cindy Lynn Stadium, including 16-11-6 against ranked foes. Lousiville hosted NCAA Championship matches at Lynn Stadium during the 2014, 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019 seasons.
