CHAPTER III
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
This chapter is to provide the description of the steps taken to conduct the study. The description involves the research design, data source, the research method and instrument, then the data analysis and collection techniques. This research aims to find the reasonable answer to the research problems in the chapter 1 in order to clarify the problems critically and academically.
3.1 Research Design
This research wants to get the information about the types and patterns of collocation in the Dumb and dumber movie’s manuscript. Therefore the researcher used descriptive qualitative research since its purpose was to describe all the collocation that state by main characters (Lloyd, Harry, and Mary) in this movie’s manuscript. Creswell (2009) states that qualitative research is a research applying natural setting to interpret a particular phenomenon and done using various method. Natural setting means here that the researcher doesn’t give any treatment but only put the data from the movie’s subtitle product and then interpret the use of collocation phenomenon.
3.2 Research Object
The data is the collocation of Dumb and dumber movie years 1994. This
“Dumb and Dumber" movie is directed by Peter Farrelly and Bennet Yellin'.The
data was extracted from the whole conversation’s and sentences of the manuscript

from the main characters: Harry, Lloyd, and Mary. Therefore, the researcher took the entire sample containing collocation words in the movie as the data.
3.3 Research Method
This research method is descriptive qualitative research. The data are the collocations contain in main characters (Lloyd, Harry, and Mary) having collocations in Dumb and dumber movie specifically in its manuscript. The researcher uses documentation or document analysis as technique of collecting data in this research. According to Ary (2010), qualitative research deals with the description of the words rather than number of statistic of the data. Document analysis is focused on analyzing and related to the studies of communication. The researcher focused on analyzing the manuscript of The movie entitled “Dumb and Dumber" Directored by Peter Farrelly and Bennet Yellin'.
3.4 Research Instrument
The necessary tool in the process of collecting data is research instruments. Creswell (2009) explained that the researcher (Human Instrument) are the primary tool for qualitative research in the collecting data process. Ary (2010) said documents, observations, and interviews are the methods in qualitative research to collect the data. Researcher select human instrument and document as research instrument in this research.
Both instruments will be elaborated below:
20
3.4.1. Human Instrument (Researcher)
According to Creswell (2009), human are the tool for collecting and analyzing data. The result of process depends on the skill or ability from the researcher (Human Instrument) to making conclusion in qualitative research.
Maykut and Morehouse (1994) support the idea by explaining that human instrument is multifunctional and used to reveal happening phenomena. In this case, the researcher used document analysis. In this research, the instrument is the researcher himself. The researcher uses human instrument because the data are qualitative. Researchers are the instrument itself to interpret the data different from quantitative that requiring calculation and the data are interpreted.
3.4.2. Document (Artifact)
Ary (2010) stated that document analysis is a method that used in visual or written material that focused on analyzing some characteristic of materials, such as movie, song, novel, book, television show and etc. This instrument is critically necessary for conduct this research. Researcher used document (the whole movie) as the instrument in this research. For your information, the researcher focused on grouping the collocations (grammatical and lexical) based on Benson and Ilsons’
theory. This research also used Oxford Collocations Learners Dictionary and
IELTS Collocations Dictionary to confirm the validity of the data.

3.5 Data Collection
In the process of collecting the data, the researcher took several steps to this research. The steps will be explained below:
1. Watching the original film of “Dumb and Dumber" Directored by Peter Farrelly and Bennet Yellin and reading the manuscript.
2. Underlying and highlighting the sentences containing collocation words in The movie entitled “Dumb and Dumber" Directored by Peter Farrelly and Bennet Yellin.
3. Listing the sentences containing collocation words in The movie entitled
“Dumb and Dumber" Directored by Peter Farrelly and Bennet Yellin.
4. Double checking collocation words that had been listed before.
3.6 Data Analysis
After collecting the data, the researcher continued to the next step, that is the data analysis. The steps described as follows:
1. Organizing all English collocations which are found in the movie.
2. Classifying the types and patterns of collocation words in the movie by referring the theories in chapter 2.
3. Rechecking the types and patterns of collocation words to ensure the collocations belong to the correct types and patterns.
4. Presenting the data of types and patterns of English collocations in the form of tables (see the tables in the next page).
5. Discussing and inferring the result of the analysis based on the English
collocation findings.
