(4) A NOTE FROM OUR PASTOR. “Go into the whole world and proclaim the gospel to every creature. Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved; whoever does not believe will be condemned…” . Mark 16:1516. My brothers and sisters in Christ, what an amazing day this was for the Apostles! What a blessing for all of us! Today we celebrate the Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord. It is a time of transition for the Apostles and for all of us. Before the Crucifixion and after the Resurrection, Jesus was teaching and doing the will of the Father. Today, His Ascension into heaven, when Jesus returned to the Father and commanded us to, “Go into the whole world and proclaim the gospel to every creature.” (Mark 16:15), signals us to go into the world to live and preach the Good News! What is the good news? “Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved.” In the last 40 days, Jesus appeared to His disciples in many and various ways, just as He does for us today, in the life of the Church. The Ascension of Jesus fulfilled what He had promised. He was going to the Father in His triumphant victory over sin and death. We, too, hope to follow Jesus after our earthly pilgrimage if we are faithful to what He had commanded: Love one another as I love you. Jesus has shown us the way and has called us His friends. He has told us everything that the Father told Him. We now need to live out the Gospel in our lives. This also reminds us of our telos, our end. Our destiny is to be with God if we choose to be with Him. He does not impose His love upon us. God invites and then waits. However, this invitation is not forever. We only have a finite time to respond to His invitation. Our true home is not here. We are meant to be with God forever. Yet, He grants us the freedom to reject His love. Throughout the ages, there are people who have rejected that love. They are forever banished from His sight. Let us not be one of them. Christ’s Ascension into heaven does not mean that we are left alone. Jesus promised He would send a Helper, the Holy Spirit, to guide us. We come to meet Christ in the Sacraments in the Church and through one another, if we are open to His grace to see the world through His eyes. The Risen Lord would always be with the disciples as He is also with us in the “upper room” of the Mass. We must discern His presence, not through sight, but through faith. “Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed.” Wherever we go on vacation this summer, Christ, in all His risen reality, is as close to us as the nearest Catholic Church. The point of the Ascension for us is that the Risen Christ is with us each day. And so my brothers and sisters, let us continue our journey together as one family in Christ asking Him for the grace and strength to remain faithful to God’s commandments, to spread the Gospel by loving God above all things, with all our heart, mind and soul, and to love our neighbor as ourselves. (12) FAMILY FAITH FORMATION High School Youth Ministry Sunday’s Topic will be “Death and the Resurrection”. What are the 3 options when we die? How do we as Catholics look at death?
