APPLIED TECHNOLOGY DIPLOMA PROGRAM

Thank you for your interest in our Pharmacy Technician Diploma Program! Enclosed is

the admission packet. It includes information you will need to read and forms you will need to complete and return if you would like to begin the application process.

Pharmacy Technicians perform essential tasks under the supervision of licensed pharmacists and execute technical and clerical duties in the systematic operation of the pharmacy. The average hourly wage for pharmacy technicians is $12.74 in Florida. However, salaries vary greatly between retail pharmacies, hospitals, home health agencies, and mail-order pharmacies.

The Gulf Coast Community College Pharmacy Technician Diploma Program is pending approval by the Florida Board of Pharmacy, the regulating body for Pharmacy Technicians beginning January 1, 2010. As identified in the packet and brochure, it is a 40 credit hour program that encompasses online study, on-campus classroom and laboratory hours, and clinical experience in a variety of local pharmacies. Students should complete the full time program in 3 semesters; however, a part-time option is available. General education courses can be completed on a part-time basis prior to entering the program. Upon graduation, students receive an Applied Technology Diploma as a Pharmacy Technician and are eligible to sit for the national certification exam.

This exciting opportunity offers you an entry into healthcare professions and allows for tremendous growth and learning! Pharmacy Technicians play a vital role in promoting and protecting the health of countless Americans daily. Experience learning without limits at Gulf Coast Community College as you work toward becoming a competent healthcare professional—someone who will really make a difference in the lives of others!

Please read through the information provided carefully. If you have any questions, contact Craig

Wise, Assistant Coordinator for Health Sciences Admissions, at (850) 913-3311 or via e-mail [email protected]

ADMISSION APPLICATION DEADLINES: One class is admitted each year beginning in the fall

IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING YOUR PAST

Applicants to the Pharmacy Technician Program in the Health Sciences Division of Gulf Coast Community College work very hard to meet the entry requirements for selection. Our programs make every effort to accept as many academically qualified students as possible. In addition to meeting basic entry requirements, however, applicants must also consider how their personal history may affect their ability to meet clinical requirements, sit for various licensure exams, and ultimately gain employment.

Some of our Health Sciences Programs will require students to visit certain clinical sites that may require background checks in order for students to work with their patients. Students who cannot produce a favorable background check may not be able to meet their program’s clinical obligations, which would jeopardize their ability to successfully complete that program.

Students who graduate from our programs must also pass a certification exam in order to be employable. The various entities that provide testing and licenses for Health Professionals, oftentimes, require background checks prior to sitting for the exams and applying for licensure. It is possible to have successfully graduated from a health science program and still be denied the opportunity for licensure because of an unfavorable background check.

Employers of certified health professionals can also have a variety of requirements that must be met prior to the granting of employment. These can include background checks of varying depths and drug screenings. It is possible to graduate from a program and obtain the health professional certification, but be denied some employment options due to an unfavorable background check and/or drug screen.
