“We give our students the edge because we operate

at the very forefront of business. Our teaching is

grounded in the reality of what it means to work in

business, not only in Australia but around the world.”

Professor Alex Frino Dean

Since our inception in 1969, MGSM has consistently succeeded in delivering one of the world’s leading Master of Business Administration (MBA) programs.

We are proud to be ranked among the top business schools in the world by The

Economist ‘Which MBA’ Survey. Further, our alumni network of 16,500 boasts CEO and

countless members of the C-suite, as well as entrepreneurs, consultants, directors and even politicians.

Despite our long history of success, we must continue to look forward. Business no longer happens within the four walls of an office and it is critical that MGSM not only adapts but leads the way.

As I enter my second year as Dean of MGSM, I am focused on our continued evolution as educators, innovators and researchers. I believe that developing a truly global mindset amongst our students, faculty and academics is key to the continued success of our school and our students.

It is essential that our students be exposed to cutting edge theories and techniques from leading minds, whether they be in Australia or elsewhere. We must provide our students with opportunities to learn and experience different cultures and we must expose their minds to different ways of solving problems or adapting to change. We must also provide our students with the opportunities to work on real projects in partnership with leading domestic and global organisations.

At MGSM, we offer a progressive and practical educational experience. We give our students the edge because we operate at the very forefront of business. Our teaching is grounded in the reality of what it means to work in business, not only in Australia but around the world.

As we continue to evolve, my vision is for MGSM to be a business school which provides a truly international and dynamic perspective on leadership and management, and one where our students thrive because of our global profile and networks.

MGSM & Macquarie University

MGSM’s main campus is located within the grounds of Macquarie

University, one of Australia’s leading universities. MGSM’s facilities have

been developed with the business-person in mind, but our students

can also enjoy the many benefits of being associated with one of

Australia’s premier universities, such as access to the state-of-the-art

library as well as sports and recreational facilities.

MGSM

MGSM has an international reputation for excellence in management education and is consistently ranked by The

Economist “Which MBA?” Survey as a leading business school

in Australia, the Asia-Pacific region, and on a global stage. MGSM was established in 1969, one of the first business schools to be created in Australia, with the purpose of providing rigorous postgraduate education for managers and executives.

We specialise in the delivery of a comprehensive suite of postgraduate and MBA degree programs designed to fulfil the needs of the management professional.

Much has changed in the last 45 years, but our mantra for excellence has remained constant.

MACqUARIE UNIVERSITY

Situated in the north-west of Sydney, Macquarie University has over 145,000 graduates and a current enrolment that exceeds 38,000 students.

Macquarie University is one of Australia’s most dynamic and progressive universities and is a leading institution for research in Australia.

Macquarie University takes pride in its ability to deliver high quality programs that specifically meet the needs of industry and equip students with the skills and knowledge required to meet the challenges of modern society.

Why MGSM?

Photo: Brett Cornish

Our postgraduate management education prepares students

to operate at the frontier of business; providing a framework

and a foundation for success in leadership across any function,

in any country.

REPUTATION

MGSM is Sydney’s leading business school and one of the top business schools in the world.

The school has received the prestigious AACSB accreditation and is recognised internationally for outstanding academic quality that greatly strengthens the career development and

remuneration of its students. Our MBA program ranks number 1 in the world for increase in salary, with students achieving an average 96 per cent increase on pre-MBA salary (The Economist Which MBA?

2013).

FLEXIBILITY

Catering to the career demands of busy professionals, MGSM programs are designed to give students maximum flexibility.

From the Graduate Certificate of Management to the Master of Business Administration (MBA),

our postgraduate courses link together to form an integrated pathway with the opportunity to progress from one to another. The programs are available full-time and part-time and students have the flexibility to switch between study modes or even pause their studies as lifestyle or career dictates. Content is delivered in weekly or block format and online, providing three distinct study options. Our students can choose to study at one of two campuses in Sydney (North Ryde and Sydney’s CBD), and can even study part of the course at our Hong Kong campus.

The MGSM academic year is divided into four terms starting in January, April, June and September. Students can opt to start the program at the beginning of any of these four terms. Regardless if study is full-time or part-time, in weekly, block or online classes, at Sydney North

Ryde, CBD or Hong Kong campus, the chosen program follows the same structure and delivers the same high quality standards.

STUDENT qUALITY

The maturity and experience of MGSM students are significant. Over 70 per cent of students possess at least 10 years of work experience. In addition, MGSM students are from different academic, cultural and professional backgrounds. This diversity, aligned with the maturity of our student cohort, enriches the classroom environment making the MGSM MBA a unique and challenging experience.

FOCUS

Our faculty are dedicated solely to postgraduate education, are highly qualified and possess extensive industry experience, often combining business

backgrounds with academic excellence. The MGSM teaching method is grounded in the realities of

working in business. Highly practical, our teaching bridges the gap between theory and ‘real-world’ application.

AUTONOMY

MGSM is one of the few remaining autonomous business schools in Australia.

Our campuses are designed specifically to accommodate business professionals and our faculty only teach postgraduate content to professional students.

“The internship unit offers an opportunity to bring everything together while you are still in the program and provide a valuable platform during your transition to another role. Since my official internship ended in Sydney, I have continued my contact with the firm and have accepted a manager position at PwC China.”

Timothy Johns (UK)

Intern at PwC 2013

A practical approach

MGSM is committed to providing postgraduate degrees that are

relevant, up-to-date with leading managerial practices and most

importantly, practical.

THE LIVING CASE

STUDY

As one of Australia’s most connected business schools, MGSM partners with domestic and global firms to deliver a curriculum that is grounded in industry and reality. These business partnerships enable us to deliver highly innovative units such as the ‘Living Case Study’. This elective unit of study has seen MGSM students entrenched in management consulting projects for major organisations such as Siemens, British Telecom and Pfizer.

“We had been looking for a different way to address some of the strategic issues facing Pfizer and this collaboration represented a unique opportunity to work with academia to address an issue that essentially affects us all: access to cancer medicines and funding new cancer therapies.

Executives from our New York office visited Sydney to hear the student

presentations, and everyone at Pfizer was delighted with the results.”

MGSM Alumnus (2011) & Living Case Study Client Dr Masum Hossain

Regional President Asia-Pacific Pfizer Oncology

“What sets MGSM’s MBA program apart from the traditional MBA is the practical component and the effort that the school makes to engage with the private sector and have industry contribute to the program. That gives the student the opportunity to work and learn from real case scenarios and not from something that is hypothetical or determined in the isolation of a

classroom environment.”

Living Case Study Client Andreas Roost

General Manager Value Added Services, Siemens

“The question that we posed to the students was fundamental, and a key strategic issue facing the organisation: how do we increase GDP revenues in the next three years, not just within Australia, but also across other parts of Asia and the globe? I was really impressed that the students very quickly understood complex issues and were able to present excellent solutions. The underlying theme of ‘Global Mindset’ through the program really helped the students consider and draw up the best options. In addition the subsequent piece of Global Mindset work that my Global Leadership team undertook with MGSM served to create new possibilities and has improved the performance of my business. I would certainly recommend this style of engagement to other organisations.”

Living Case Study Client Robin Farnan

Managing Director, BT Financial Technology Services

INTERNSHIP

The MGSM Management Internship is a 10 week work placement for MBA students. The Internship gives students at advanced stages of their degree an opportunity to work in an Australian or multinational organisation on a real-time business project.

The Interns work independently or as part of a team from the organisation under the supervision of an MGSM academic and the client sponsor. At the conclusion of the Internship the student must present a report to their sponsor and MGSM. The report forms the main basis of

the student’s assessment for inclusion on their academic record.

MGSM Interns are expected to work at a senior level and have advanced communication, research, writing, consulting and project management skills.

SPONSORING

ORGANISATIONS

Australian Securities Exchange (ASX), British Telecom, Coca- Cola Amatil, GE, GMO, Google, Johnson & Johnson, LinkedIn, Luxottica, Novartis, Nuplex, Optus, Pfizer, PwC, Sapphire Group, Siemens, Virgin and Westpac are just some of the employers who sponsor MGSM interns.

”Working for GE Healthcare was exactly what I hoped it would be. The company’s success rests on the business model that their customers be placed at the centre of all important decisions. GE Healthcare’s propensity for innovation and collaboration are truly amazing, and I am proud to have been part of such a great team.”

Your MGSM experience

Your MGSM experience is truly unique - you can choose where to study,

when to study, how to study and what to study, tailoring your learning

experience to suit your needs, your requirements and your lifestyle.

Catering to the career demands of busy professionals, MGSM strives to offer its students postgraduate programs that are as flexible as possible. At MGSM you choose how to study, what to study and where to study.

WHERE?

MGSM has three campuses, two in Sydney (North Ryde and CBD) and one in Hong Kong. Students are able to take units at any of the three campuses.

Campus facilities include state-of-the-art lecture theatres and well equipped, modern syndicate rooms for group work and study outside of the classroom.

NORTH RYDE

MGSM’s main campus, located in the picturesque grounds of Macquarie University at Macquarie Park, North Ryde is approximately a 30-minute drive from Sydney’s CBD and is easily accessible via all forms of public transport. The campus comprises modern teaching facilities, state-of-the-art IT facilities, well-equipped syndicate rooms, on-campus catering and much more.

SYDNEY CBD

The School’s CBD campus is located in the heart of Sydney near Circular quay. The campus provides students with excellent study facilities and is often considered more convenient for our part-time students working in or around the city. This campus also includes excellently appointed teaching rooms and syndicate rooms, a computer room and catering facilities.

HONG KONG

MGSM has developed a strong footprint in Hong Kong, one of Asia’s most influential cities and centres of banking and finance. Our students can elect to study units at our Hong Kong campus as part of any of the postgraduate programs offered by MGSM (units are taught in block format only). The campus is located in Wanchai, in the heart of Hong Kong.

WHEN?

MGSM’s academic year runs from early January to mid-December and consists of four 10 week terms, followed by one week of exams and one-week break between each term. Students can elect to enter the program at any of the four entry points throughout the calendar year: Term 1 - January

Term 2 - April Term 3 - June Term 4 - September

WHAT?

Through our vast range of elective units, students are able to tailor the MBA to suit their specific needs and career aspirations. MGSM offers over 35 electives.

HOW?

Each unit of study consists of 40 hours of lecture time. Students can chose from face-to-face classes, delivered on weekly or block formats or online.

Weekly classes enable students to attend one face-to-face class per week throughout the 10-week term. Block classes allow students to study the face-to-face hours intensively over five days (two weekends) within the 10-week term. Block classes are often preferred by students who may be required to travel for work purposes.

Online Interactive classes allow students to complete the course units without

having to attend a physical class location. Highly interactive, each week students participate in activities using interactive tools which may include forums and wikis. The online interactive classes are offered within the same term structure (over 10 weeks) as our on-campus classes, and deliver the same rigorous, high quality learning outcomes as our on-campus units.

Note that, for each course unit, you can select your preferred study mode depending on timetable availability. That means that you can mix and match according to your work and personal commitments.

POST - MBA PROGRAM

At MGSM we understand that the world of business doesn’t stop changing once you’ve completed your MBA study. To respond to changing business needs and ensure our students remain top of their game, we have developed the Graduate Certificate of Management Post-MBA program. This is a four unit course designed for MBA graduates, enabling alumni of MGSM (and other recognised business schools) to extend their study, hone their skills and remain at the cutting edge of business practice.

This program is unique in the Australian market and offered only by MGSM.

Regardless of the graduation date, this extension program further refines skills, broadens knowledge and provides first hand access to the very latest management concepts and tools required to face the constantly changing, global business environment.

The program, which must be completed within one calendar year, has been designed to offer flexibility and can be achieved in a number of ways.

Students can elect to study any four units that they have not already undertaken during the completion of the MBA program. The chosen units can be studied in any format (block or evening classes) at either the North Ryde or Sydney CBD campus. Students can even elect to study any of the four units at our Hong Kong campus (block format only). To provide a truly international learning experience, students can elect to complete the China Study Tour (two units), plus two additional units.
