December began and ended with

unsettled conditions, caused by

depressions off the northwest coast,

but high pressure near the country

around the middle of the month

brought mainly fair weather. Strong

winds were recorded at most stations

during the first week and again

between the 26th and 29th, but the

period around mid-month was

relatively calm. Rainfall totals were

highest over the western half of the

country, with heavy falls at times

between the 1st and 9th, occasionally

accompanied by thunder, and also

between the 23rd and 28th. Little or

no rain was measured at many

stations between the 10th and 21st,

however, and the total number of

wetdays during the month (days with

1mm or more rainfall) was close to

the normal range for December of

between 13 and 20. Most of the

month was mild, especially the first

week, but minimum temperatures fell

close to or below normal between the

17th and 25th, bringing widespread

ground frost. There was no air frost

during the month in most coastal

locations, while the total number of

air frosts recorded at the majority of

inland stations of between 4 and 6

number for December. An exception

was Mullingar, where 10 air frosts were

measured. Sunshine totals were above

normal in most places, especially in the

east; Dublin Airport’s total was more

than twice the amount recorded in

parts of the west and north.

WEATHER

December 2007

A succession of Atlantic storms that passed close to Ireland in late November and early December 2007 generated unusually severe offshore conditions, with very high seas along the western seaboard. Between December 7th and 9th, a slow-moving depression of central pressure 966hPa (see image below) brought stormy conditions and exceptionally high waves of over 17 metres, as had been forecast by the numerical wave model from the beginning of the month. This model is driven by information from the network of weather buoys around the Irish coast operated by the Marine Institute, together with weather reports from Met Eireann and global wave model data from the US Navy forecast model FNMOC. Waves can be forecast up to 2 days ahead on the Irish model and up to 6 days ahead on the European global model. Shown on the right is the forecast chart from the Marine Institute-adapted wave model,

six days ahead of the weekend of the December 8th/9th, showing significant wave heights of between 14 and 16 metres anticipated off

Ireland’s west coast. This forecast was broadcast though the normal Met Eireann weather reports on both television and radio, alerting both commercial interests and the public to what was on the way.

The chart below shows data recorded by the M6 buoy, located approximately 300km west of the Galway coast, as the storm centre passed eastwards over Ireland. It shows that, just after midnight on the 9th, a significant wave height was recorded of 17.2m, with a period of 14 seconds; this was the highest wave ever measured by any of the Irish buoy network. Slightly further west, the U.K. moored buoy K3 (see chart left) recorded a wave of 18.3m at 2100UTC on the 8th, exceeding the previous record from a U.S. buoy of 17.9m, recorded in September 2004 during Hurricane Ivan. Wave heights at the Irish M3 buoy, off the southwest coast, reached 13.8m at 0500UTC on the 9th, exceeding the previous highest value there of 12.9m, recorded in January 2005(see also page 5).

1st to 9th: A series of deep Atlantic

depressions passed close to the northwest

of Ireland, with their associated frontal

systems bringing rain or showers each day,

accompanied by strong, mainly

southwesterly winds. Heaviest falls were

recorded on the 1st and 2nd in western

areas and more generally on the 6th and

8th; during this 10-day period, close to

100mm of rain was measured in parts of

the west and southwest, causing localised

flooding. Gales were frequent near Atlantic

coasts, generating a huge sea swell. A wave

measuring 17.2m was recorded at midnight

on the 9th by the M6 weather buoy,

located approximately 300km off the west

coast; this was the highest wave ever

recorded off the Irish coast (see page 2).

Temperatures during this period were well

above normal with no air frost.

10th to 21st: An anticyclone to the south

of Ireland moved slowly northeastwards to

become centred over the North Sea. This

period was dry apart from some light rain

or showers in western areas at first, with

heavy rain in the extreme southwest on the

12th. Daytime temperatures fell close to or

below normal, while ground frost became

more widespread and severe in some

midland and eastern areas between the

17th and 21st. Winds backed to a

southeasterly direction during the period,

becoming light to moderate generally.

22nd to 31st: Atlantic depressions again

moved close to the northwest coast,

bringing a return to wet and windy

conditions over Ireland. Heaviest falls were

in the period 27th/28th. Frost was

widespread early in the period, but milder

conditions returned by the end of the

month.

Wind and elements: Mean windspeeds

for the month of between 9 and 17 knots

(17 and 31km/h) were above normal

everywhere and were the highest for

December for between 8 and 24 years in

many places. The highest gust, 68 knots

(126km/h), was measured at Belmullet on

the 4th. Thunder was widespread over the

western half of the country on the 1st,

with isolated thunderstorms also on the

2nd, 5th, 7th, 9th and 28th. Hail was

recorded in the periods 1st to 2nd, 7th to

9th, on the 25th and between the 28th to

30th. The only report of snow was from

Knock Airport on the 28th. Fog was

observed in the periods 4th to 9th, 19th to

21st and 24th to 28th.

WEATHER

December 2007

Right

Air temperatures were well above normal during the early part of the month, with both maximum and minimum values around five degrees higher than the December normal in the period between the 4th and 6th. Cork Airport’s maximum of 13.8°C on the 6th was the highest for December at the station since it opened in 1962, while Shannon Airport’s highest value of 15.3°C on the 4th was its highest December value since 1948. A maximum value of 15.8°C at the automatic station at Fermoy (Moorepark), Co. Cork, on the 6th, was the highest December value at the station since it opened in 1966. The highest ever December temperature in Ireland of 18.1°C was measured at Peamount, Co. Dublin, in 1948.

Mean sea level pressure values for the month ranged

from 1012hPa in the north and northwest to over

1017hPa in the southeast, around 4hPa above

normal for December. The early part of the month

was dominated by low pressure, however, as deep

Atlantic depressions passed close to or over Ireland.

Claremorris measured the lowest value of the

month, 967.7hPa on the 9th. Pressure rose sharply

thereafter and the month’s highest value, 1040.6hPa,

was measured at Malin Head on the 18th.

Chemical Analysis of Precipitation and Air Samples

at Valentia Observatory

Acid rain occurs when pollutants combine with moisture in the air to form sulphuric or nitric acid. pH is the simplest way of measuring the acidity of precipitation. Usually pH of 7.00 is considered neutral but this is not the case in rainfall samples. Pure water in the atmosphere has an equilibrium pH value of 5.65 at 20°C owing to carbon dioxide in the air dissolving to form carbonic acid. Any value below pH 5.65 is considered acid while any value above is considered alkaline.

Sulphur dioxide and sulphate in air contribute to the formation of sulphuric acid; nitrate in air contributes to the formation of nitric acid.

Conductivity measures the total ion activity in the rainfall, i.e. the higher the conductivity the greater the number of ions present.

Rainfall totals for the month

were very variable across the

country. While it was a wet

month in western areas, totals

were below normal over much of

Leinster, particularly along

eastern and southeastern coasts.

Totals ranged from 51mm at

Dublin (Merrion Square) to

315mm at Maam Valley, Co.

Galway, with percentage of

normal values between 64% at

Rosslare and 173% at Ballygar,

Co. Galway.

The period around the middle of

the month was mostly dry, with

little or no rainfall measured

between the 13th and 21st. Rainfall

was recorded on every other day of

the month, however, and the

number of wetdays during the

month (days with 1mm or more

rainfall) was generally in the normal

range for December of between 15

and 19, although there were fewer

than this in the east and more in

parts of the west. The wettest spell

of the month over most of the

country was between the 6th and

8th, with heavy falls also in many

places on the 27th. Shannon

Airport’s fall of 33.5mm on the 6th

was its highest daily fall for

December since 1975. The highest

daily fall of the month, 44.8mm,

was recorded at Carron, Co. Clare,

on the 27th.

TEMPERATURE

Most of the month was mild with little or no

frost, but there was a short spell of colder

weather between the 19th and 25th, when frost

became widespread. Mean air temperatures for

the month were between one and two degrees

above normal and it was the warmest December

for between 13 and 19 years in parts of Munster

and Connacht. Mean values ranged from 5.2°C at

Derrygreenagh, Co. Offaly, to 9.8°C at Sherkin

Island, Co. Cork.

The early part of the month was exceptionally mild,

with both daytime and nightime temperatures well

above the December normal (see page 3). The highest

value, 15.8°C, was measured at Fermoy (Moorepark),

Co. Cork, on the 6th, the highest December value at

the station since it opened in 1966. There was no air

frost recorded in most coastal locations, while at

many inland stations there were between 2 and 6 air

frosts, compared with the normal range for

December in these areas of between 9 and 11; an

exception was at Derrygreenagh, where as many as 12

air frosts were recorded. The lowest air temperature

of the month, -6.4°C, was measured at Casement

Aerodrome on the 21st, while the lowest grass

minimum value, -10.5°C, was recorded at

Warrenstown, Co. Meath, also on the 21st.

Sunnier than normal

almost everywhere

Sunshine totals for the month were above

normal almost everywhere. They ranged

from 33 hours at Knock Airport to 70

hours at Dublin Airport, with percentage

of normal values between 89% of normal

at Shannon Airport and 138% at Dublin

Airport.

Although the period between the 13th and

21st was dry almost everywhere, it was also

dull until the 17th, when most stations

recorded their highest daily totals. The 10th

was also a sunny day generally, especially in

the south; Cork Airport’s value of 7.0 hours

on this day was the highest of the month.

Global solar radiation totals were also higher

than normal in most places, varying between

98% of normal at Birr and 127% at Dublin

Airport.

A severe winter storm affected much of the U.S. during the week of the 10th. Freezing rain and snow left a covering of thick ice in many midwestern states, causing the deaths of 36 people and leaving more than 800,000 homes without power. The same system moved towards the northeast, bringing heavy snow; Boston received 25cm of snow on the 13th, more than the city typically gets during the entire month of December.

Tropical storm Olga developed in the western Atlantic as a sub-tropical storm on the 10th, after the official end of the Atlantic hurricane season. It moved westwards along the northern coast of Puerto Rico with sustained winds of 75 km/h, producing torrential rainfall of over 200mm in the interior of the island. The storm reached its peak intensity of 93km/h on the 11th, just before making landfall in the eastern coast of the Dominican Republic. Here, the release of water from the Tavera Dam for fear of its collapse inundated seven towns. In total, Olga affected more than 34,000 people, killing 20 and damaging nearly 7,000 homes.

According to the World Meteorological Organisation, sea levels continue to rise at rates substantially above the average for the 20th century of about 1.7mm per year. Satellite measurements show that since 1993, the global-averaged sea level has been rising at about 3mm per year, while the 2007 level is about 20cm higher than the 1870 estimate.
