Job Title: Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in Library and Information Science Department: Department of Information Studies

Grade: 8 – 9

Salary range: Grade 8: £40,216 - £47,441 p.a. including London Allowance Grade 9: £51,563 - £56,067 p.a. including London Allowance FTE: Full-time

Post available: From 1 September 2013

Job description

Main purpose of the job:

To carry out high-quality research, teaching, public engagement and administration within the UCL Department of Information Studies, with a teaching focus on the MA in Library and Information Studies.

We would particularly welcome applicants who can contribute to teaching and research in some or any of the areas of information management and access, digital asset management, information literacy, intellectual property, bibliometrics and international librarianship. We are also happy to look at any particular interests which applicants may bring and how these might develop our teaching and research programmes and in the interdisciplinary applications of these to other areas of research within the department.

Main duties and responsibilities:

 to carry out research, including writing publications, applying for external funding, and managing funded research projects in line with personal objectives agreed in the Staff Review process;

 to teach, mainly, but not exclusively at graduate level, in relevant areas agreed with the Head of Department and reviewed from time to time by the Head of Department;

 to supervise or assist with supervision of the research of taught graduate (MA/MSc/MRes) and/or research graduate (MPhil/PhD) students;

 to contribute to the development, planning and implementation of a high quality curriculum;

 to assist in the development of learning materials, preparing schemes of work and maintaining records to monitor student progress, achievement and attendance;  to participate in the development, administration and marking of assessments;  to provide pastoral care and support to students;

 to maintain personal continuing professional development;

 to participate in the administration of the Department's programmes of study and other activities as requested;

 to take part in public engagement and knowledge exchange activities, at a department, faculty or university level;

 to contribute to departmental, faculty, and/or UCL-wide working groups or committees as requested;

 to actively follow and promote UCL policies, including Equal Opportunities;

 to maintain an awareness and observation of Fire, Health and Safety regulations;  To carry out any other duties within the scope, spirit and purpose of the job as required

by the Head of Department.

Person specification

1. Knowledge

Essential:

 A broad knowledge of the library and information sectors and the academic discipline of LIS, with knowledge of contemporary issues within the profession, especially digital trends and applications.

 Expert knowledge sufficient to undertake academic research and dissemination, and advanced level teaching and doctoral supervision in the library and information science disciplines.

Desirable:

 Knowledge and experience of the library and information sectors preferably gained from working in the field.

2. Skills and abilities

Essential:

 Ability to conduct high quality research of at least national standing reflected in the authorship of a number of high quality publications appropriate to the individual’s career stage.

 Ability to supervise research-oriented academic work by undergraduate, master’s and doctoral students.

 Ability to teach at both undergraduate and graduate level and give other forms of public presentation.

 Ability to manage time and work to strict deadlines.

 Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.  Ability and willingness to participate in the pastoral care of students.

Desirable:

 Ability to carry out public engagement and knowledge transfer activities.

 Ability to write high quality research grant applications and take part in the management of funded research projects.

3. Aptitude

Essential:

 Aptitude for working collaboratively.

 Aptitude for working within an interdisciplinary setting.

 Aptitude for sharing in the organisation and management of undergraduate and master’s degree programmes.

 Aptitude for communicating knowledge to non-specialist audiences.

Desirable:

 Potential to play a part in the future development of the MA in Library and Information Studies, and therefore aptitude for leadership and management within an academic context.

4. Qualifications

Essential:

 PhD in a relevant subject.

 Professional qualification in a library or information science field.

Desirable:

 Teaching qualification in one of the areas with which the Department is associated.

5. Previous Experience

Essential:

 Active involvement in research at university level.

 Professional experience in an area with which the Department is associated.  Involvement in practitioner research.

 Management of funded research.  Assessment of student work.  Curriculum design.

 Pastoral care of students.
