GENERAL SESSION

Keynote Address by The Honorable Hillary

Rodham Clinton

Arie Crown Theater, McCormick Place

Hillary Rodham Clinton served as the 67th U.S. Secretary of State from 2009 until 2013, after nearly four decades in public service. Her "smart power" approach to foreign policy

repositioned American diplomacy and development for the 21st century. Secretary Clinton played a central role in restoring America’s standing in the world, reasserting the United States as a Pacific power, imposing crippling sanctions on Iran and North Korea, responding to the Arab Awakening and negotiating a ceasefire in the Middle East. Earlier, as First Lady and Senator from New York, she traveled to more than 80 countries as a champion of human rights, democracy, and opportunities for women and girls. Secretary Clinton also worked to provide health care to millions of children, create jobs and opportunity, and support first responders who risked their lives at Ground Zero. In her historic campaign for President, Secretary Clinton won 18 million votes.

Retail Innovation: Transform Your

Company by Learning from the Best

Grand Ballroom S100, McCormick Place

Shoppers’ interests and needs are changing globally but how does this affect how retail concepts develop and how stores engage customers? Over the last decade we witnessed how small stores migrated to big-box retail and might yet realign to small(er) again. Retailers made massive efforts to sell online, while several pure-players are slowly opening physical stores. The lines between retail channels and retail segments continue to blur. This session will provide results from a study of retailers located across the globe and highlight what true innovation looks like so that you can gain inspiration for the transformation of your company. In addition, one retail leader will share how his retail concept has successfully evolved in order to keep pace with the needs and desires of its customers.

Culture Rules: Putting People First and

Building a First-Class Team

Grand Ballroom S100, McCormick Place

What is the role of culture in the success of an organization? Many corporate leaders believe that growth comes from focusing on the bottom line, but George Bodenheimer believes just the opposite—that great organizations only become that way when they focus on people before focusing on profits. The longest-serving leader of one of the most recognized media companies in the world, George Bodenheimer has nurtured and sustained a strong organizational culture built around trusting employees, giving them the tools they need to do their jobs and empowering them to innovate. His leadership insights show that empathetic skills—motivating through listening, caring and encouraging—coupled with business skills,

ultimately fuel creativity, innovation and bottom-line growth and are the key to success. His refreshing approach to leadership

Technology Trends Changing the Shopping

Experience

McCormick Place S101b

Online is currently a very small part of the US grocery market but there are increasingly clear signs that this is about to change. Some are even calling it a “tsunami.” Amazon’s plan to combine deliveries of fresh food with general merchandise using its own fleet of trucks in major urban areas comprising half of the US population represents a threat to the traditional brick and mortar model that needs to be taken seriously. The rapid growth of start-up home delivery operators such as RelayFoods and Instacart suggest there is considerable pent-up demand – build and they will come. In this session, participants will learn from the experience of leading food retailers in the UK and France, where online grocery shopping is most advanced. You will also hear about step-change innovations in order fulfillment; new formats combining the best of the online and in-store shopping experience; and in-store service, which is set to become an even greater differentiator. Participants will be encouraged to “Think big, test small” in order to become trend setters rather than followers.

GENERAL SESSION & BREAKFAST

Earning Trust the Hard Way: Addressing

Hot and Heartfelt Issues with Consumers

Intercontinental Hotel, Renaissance Ballroom

GMO’s, pink slime, sow gestation stalls. Recent examples of consumer outrage and mistrust with the food industry are all too familiar. Food retailers strive to feed families and enrich lives, yet consumers continue to express skepticism about today’s agriculture and food industry practices. How can retailers address the tough issues in ways that promote trust? In this session we will look at what sparks consumer outrage and what earns their trust and how the same issue, handled in different ways, can be seen in very different light by

consumers. We’ll also hear from a panel of retailers who have faced real-life consumer issues about what they’ve learned along the way. Note: attendees who participate in the entire session will receive a voucher for shuttle transport to either O’Hare or Midway airports.
