In the event of an EARTHQUAKE

1. If you are indoors, remain inside. Immediately duck, cover

and hold under a desk, table, or other sturdy shelter. If there

is no such shelter stand under the nearest doorway.

2. Evacuate the building when directed to do so.

3. If you are outside, get into the open away from buildings, trees,

walls, or power lines. Sit down or lie down and brace yourself.

4. If you are in your car and it is safe to do so, pull to the side

of the road away from overpasses, bridges, or power lines.

5. Try to avoid broken glass and falling objects.

6. Avoid using matches or lighters – there might be a gas leak.

7. Avoid touching electrical wires which may have fallen.

8. Do NOT use the telephone except for emergencies.

In the event of a FIRE

1. Upon discovery of a fire alert all other nearby personnel,

your immediate supervisor, and dial 9-1-1. Be sure to give

the dispatcher the exact location of the fire. Activate fire alarm.

2. If the fire does not pose an immediate threat to safety,

use the fire extinguisher, if appropriate.

3. Evacuate the building through the nearest, safe exit.

4. Give needed first aid and CPR.

3. Time caller hung up.

If the situation permits try asking the following questions:

1. If there is a threat made to an employee, try to find out

the exact nature of the threat and why.

2. If the call is a BOMB THREAT

, try to find out the

following:

a. When is the bomb going to explode?

b. Where is the bomb now?

c. What kind of bomb is it?

d. Why did you place the bomb?

e. What is your name?

f. What is your address?

3. Listen for the following clues:

a. Age of caller.

b. Gender.

c. Accent or impediment.

d. Background noise.

e. Is the voice familiar?

4. Notify your immediate supervisor.

5. WARNING:

Electrical circuits, even small ones, can

trigger an explosive device.

a. Do NOT use 2-way radios, cell phones or pagers.

b. Do NOT turn electrical units on or off (lights,

computers, etc…)

The Santa Clara County Board of Education is the elected governing body of the Santa Clara County Office of Education. Its seven members serve four-year terms and are elected from different areas of the county. The Santa Clara County Superintendent of Schools serves as the Ex-officio Secretary to the Board of Education.

The Board of Education generally meets on the first and third Wednesday of each month in the San Jose Room, Santa Clara County Office of Education. Closed Session may be scheduled prior to the meetings. Due to breaks in the calendar and other scheduling priorities, there may be special meetings or adjustments to board meeting dates and times.

The Human Resources Branch is responsible for the personnel function and related activities of the County office, including recruiting and selecting for certificated employees, status changes for classified and certificated employees, maintaining employee records, coordinating compensation, health and welfare benefits, negotiating and administering labor contracts, coordination of the annual teacher recruitment fair and staff recognition ceremony, No Child Left Behind compliance, and unemployment claims for school districts throughout Santa Clara and San Benito counties. Credentialed staff hired by the public school system in Santa Clara County register their credentials with this office. Talent Management provides County Office staff with professional development, Champions for Leadership program, employee wellness, contract personnel and volunteer staffing programs.

Classified Personnel Services administers the recruitment, examination, job classification, compensation, layoff, hearings and appeals for non-instructional (classified) employees. These services are guided by the Merit System Rules of the Personnel Commission. Additionally, the department oversees the centralized Sub Finder System for programs operated by the SCCOE and operates Fingerprint Livescan services for county school districts and charter schools.

The Alternative Education Department provides educational programs for students who are under court supervision, or who are not attending regular school for a variety of reasons. School sites include court and community school and independent study. Our educational program at all sites emphasizes academic competencies and student social-emotional wellness.

Alternative Education also oversees Foster Youth and Homeless Education Services (FYS/HES), which provides services to children and youth in foster care and homeless situations. FYS/HES provides training to school districts and community stakeholders regarding the various educational laws that protect the rights of foster and homeless youth. FYS/HES staff also works with group home providers, the Juvenile Justice Department, the Department of Family and Children Services and other agencies and organizations involved in the lives of foster and homeless youth.
