I would like to share with you what we do every week to prepare the Church and Parish Center before you come to Mass. We want to put your safety first.
Every Friday, Mr. Gretz from Custom Cleaning disinfects the entire Church and Parish Center. This includes everything, the pews, cushions, chairs, kneelers, doors, handles, altar etc. etc.
This is what we do when you arrive for Mass:
1. First, we check your name against the reservations. We retain this list for two weeks .
2. Next, we take your temperature with a no-contact thermometer before you enter the Church or Parish Center.
3.We sanitize your hands. Then we lead you to your pew. We do the same in the Parish Center.
4. After you leave we disinfect the Church and Parish Center. We do this after each Mass.
Our goal is to send you back home as safe and healthy as you arrived.
I want to thank all of our volunteers. They have been working very hard to keep you safe. We also are in need of more volunteers to help clean and sanitize our Church. If you are able to lend a hand, please call the Parish Office at 815-467-2233.
So, please stay safe, and most of all stay healthy. We will all get through this….together.

St Bartholomew
This weeks Saint is St Bartholomew, Apostle: was one of the twelve apostles of Jesus according to the New Testament. He has also been identified
as Nathanael or Nathaniel,[1] who appears in the Gospel of John when introduced to
Jesus by Philip (who also became an apostle), (John 1:43–51) although many modern commentators reject the identification of Nathanael with Bartholomew.
Of the many miracles claimed to have been performed by Bartholomew before and af-ter his death, two very popular ones are known by the townsfolk of the small Italian is-land of Lipari.
The people of Lipari celebrated his feast day annually. The tradition of the people was to take the solid silver and gold statue from inside the Cathedral of St Bartholomew and carry it through the town. On one occasion, when taking the statue down the hill towards the town, it suddenly became very heavy and had to be set down. When the men carrying the statue regained their strength, they lifted it a second time. After an-other few seconds, it got even heavier. They set it down and attempted once more to pick it up. They managed to lift it but had to put it down one last time. Within seconds, walls further downhill collapsed. If the statue had been able to be lifted, all the towns-people would have been killed.
During World War II, the fascist regime looked for ways to finance their activities. The order was given to take the silver statue of Saint Bartholomew and melt it down. The statue was weighed, and it was found to be only a few grams. It was returned to its place in the Cathedral of Lipari. In reality, the statue is made from many kilograms of silver and it is considered a miracle that it was not melted down.
Saint Bartholomew is credited with many other miracles having to do with the weight of objects.
According to the Synaxarium of the Coptic Orthodox Church of Alexandria, Bartholo-mew's martyrdom is commemorated on the first day of the Coptic calendar (i.e., the first day of the month of Thout), which currently falls on September 11 (corresponding to August 29 in the Julian calendar). Eastern Christianity honours him on June 11 and the Catholic Church honours him on August 24. The Church of England and other An-glican churches also honour him on August 24.
QUESTION OF THE WEEK
Q. What would be a reason for me to get into purgatory?
A. Let’s start with the painful truth. The only way to enter into the full
glory and splendor of the Beatific Vision, thus seeing God face to face and
being in perfect communion with Him, is to be forgiven of every sin AND
to be purified of every attachment to sin. This is a glorious invitation and
a demanding endeavor!
Purgation of all sin and all attachment to sin is not an option. Only when
we are perfect in every way will we be ready to enter into what saints have
called “Divine Union” or “Mystical Marriage.” Think of it this way: If you
are attached to sin in your life, even the smallest imperfection, that
attachment cannot enter into the presence of God. God is all holy and
pure love. God wants you to be in union with Him, but He will not accept
your sinful attachments.
The first step is forgiveness. But that’s the easy part. God, in His mercy,
will forgive us of our sins if we are sorry and ask for forgiveness. But the
second step is to then become completely detached from all remnants of
sin. For example, if you have a habit of being critical of others in your
speech and you confess this, then you can be assured you are forgiven of
all past sins of being critical. But forgiveness does not mean you have
been purified of the “attachment” you have to that sin. In this case, an
attachment to the sin if being critical is the disordered tendency to be
critical. An attachment is different from a temptation. An attachment is
more of a habit you voluntarily formed.
Purgation is the process of breaking every sinful habit you have and
detaching from all habitual sins and even imperfections so that you can
be attached to God and His holy will alone. But how on Earth do you do
this? In the end, you don’t do it by yourself. Instead, you allow God to
come into your soul and purify it of all sinful habits and attachments.
And that will hurt! But it will be a purifying hurt and will be freeing.
Purgatory refers to the purification process of all attachments we still
have when we die. Ideally, we would go through the process of
purification here on Earth, before death, so as to enjoy Divine Union here
and now and not only in Heaven. But when we do not complete the
process here on Earth, Purgatory will complete this process after death.
If that sounds gloomy, it’s not. It’s beautiful when
understood and embraced.
