International Internships:

Tips and Resources

Finding an internship abroad can be a challenging task! This

informational packet is designed to help you get started in

your search. The more research you do, the better informed

you will be of your options. Keep in mind that many times you

have to arrange your own housing. Some internships also

require you to have some knowledge of the language in your

country while others require a language course to be taken

Different Types of International Internships

• Paid Internships: Your employer pays you a salary to work abroad. However, these are extremely hard to come by and you may be required to pay for housing and necessities.

• Unpaid Internships: You are not being paid for your work-it is considered voluntary. If not going through a specific program you may have to pay a lot more to set up living arrangements.

It is strongly recommended to pursue you internship through a program because oftentimes you can find a package deal on flights and housing. Some programs also offer weekend trips throughout your stay.

Financial Aid

• If trying to use your internship for credit at UVM, you must visit the Office of International Education to determine credits. You should submit the “Study Abroad Approval Form” to Financial Aid to see if your expenses can be covered.

• Your financial aid will vary from case to case due to the expense of the internship. UVM may or may not offer financial aid to you.

• The financial aid website (www.uvm.edu/financialaid) offers more information if you click on the Study Abroad link on the right hand side of the main page. • Some scholarships may also be available to you.

Visas

• Some countries do not require a visa if you are staying for 90 days or less but check with projectvisa.com or eurovisa.info for exact details on the country you will be interning in.

• If you do need a visa, you can apply through the country’s embassy or consulate if they have one located in the United States. Many times it is easier to just apply online. Projectvisa.com allows you to search the country you are looking to intern in and will tell you where the big embassies or consulates are located; they also provide a link to apply online.
