Finding and understanding information
HP Autonomy IDOL
Finding and understanding information
All formats and all sources
With state-of-the-art speech, image and pattern recognition technologies, HP Autonomy IDOL also indicates the content of audio and video files auto-matically. Thus, all formats of texts, images, audio and video files, transaction, database and sensor data as well as chats, tweets and social media become searchable and analyzable. The search includes all possible sources of internal databases and applica-tions, from private or public clouds to the Internet.
Adaptive system (intelligent self-learning system)
Language continues to evolve – particularly in times of social media. The adaptive platform integrates new words and phrases as well as specialist terms automatically, divides them into existing categories and creates new ones, if necessary. Furthermore, through dynamic monitoring of the created and viewed contents as well as the interactions with colleagues, customers and business partners, HP Autonomy IDOL learns to understand its users and their individual requirements.
Highest level of security – guaranteed!
HP Autonomy IDOL implements security comprehen-sively throughout the entire workflow. Existing security, rights management and access systems are taken over automatically. Only those search results are displayed to the users to which he also has access in the source system. Changes in the guidelines are
updated in real time. Legal hold functionalities prevent information from being disclosed or deleted without permission. In case of suspected violations, the IDOL intelligence makes irregularities and suspicious usage patterns visible in the log files quickly and purpose-fully.
Powerful and flexible
HP Autonomy IDOL is highly scalable: The platform is just as suitable for small department installations as for comprehensive IT infrastructures with data volumes in the petabyte range. The number of users is also virtually unlimited.
One platform for all applications
Whether it concerns search, knowledge management, eDiscovery, compliance, analytics or content manage-ment, HP Autonomy IDOL provides a unified platform for all information management applications. This facilitates maximum synergies between the applica-tions, prevents duplications and conflicts and ensures uniform user guidance.
In-house or as a cloud service
The modern distributed architecture makes HP Autonomy IDOL the ideal Cloud platform which links an unlimited number of users with a virtually unlimited number of source systems. The system can either be operated within the company or obtained from a specialized partner as a cloud service.

360 degree view of all information
Unstructured texts, emails, images, videos, audio files or social media entries can only be inadequately exploited with conventional search and analysis techniques. In contrast, HP Autonomy IDOL (Intelligent Data Operating Layer) interprets information, as we people do – but automated and a great deal faster. Due to its deep integration of semantic process-es, ontology and industry-specific taxonomiprocess-es, HP Autonomy IDOL understands concepts as well as content-based relationships between various items of information and is able to categorize and cluster them automatically, thus creating a single point of information for all users.

Big Data
Challenges and opportunities
The challenge of Big Data
Wasted information assets
Today, every company invests large sums in the development and
procurement of information. The later search and classification exercise
costs at least as much. Despite this enormous effort, usually only a
minimum fraction of the information assets can be used productively.
There are a number of reasons for this:
The amount of data stored by companies is growing at a rate of 40-60% per year. 1
In addition to the traditional business applications, an increasing number of intelligent systems, social networks, smartphones and tables generate relevant data.
Around 85 % of the information that accrues today is unstructured. 2
Until recently, ERP, CRM and other operational transaction systems mainly produced structured data. Today, this also includes images, videos, audio, notes, emails, weblogs and social media, which are largely unstructured.
Only 3 % of unstructured information is provided with metadata. 3
Categorizing unstructured information by keywords is extremely time-consuming. As a result, only little information is neatly provided with metadata and thus analyzable with conventional business intelligence systems.
69 % of the information in the enter-prises does not have business, legal or regulatory value. 4
The simpler IT makes the collection of data, the more information (also useless information) will be accumulated, which obscures the relevant search results.
Knowledge workers spend more than 20% of their working time on searching for information. 5
Because the information is usually divided between many individual data silos and only provided with metadata incompletely, the search becomes increas-ingly time-consuming.
This has costly consequences
in daily business life:
• Wrong decisions taken by the management • Uncontrolled risks
• Dissatisfied business partners • Inadequate customer service • Missed sales opportunities • Inefficient processes
Only 0,5 %
of corporate data are
actually being used.

The opportunity of Big Data
4 steps to becoming an intelligent enterprise
Every company can become intelligent. A structured step-by-step approach with a defined improvement process ensures long-term success. You start small and are able to grow flexibly and in accordance with your needs.
1. Scoping: Within the framework of a scoping workshop with all involved parties, a common understanding with regard to information analysis will be established, the data situation within the enterprise will be captured and a roadmap on how to proceed will be defined.
2. Use cases: The definition of the specific use cases forms the basis for the identification of all relevant internal and external data sources.
3. Single Point of Information: By connecting all defined data sources and by making them centrally available, a Single Point of Information (SPOI) for all users will be created.
4. Continuous improvement:
Embedding a continuous improve-ment process ensures the long-term optimization of the system. The permanently improved information enables better decision-making.

Intelligent Data Operating Layer (IDOL)
The core functions
Data becomes crucial information
Semantics and ontology
Thanks to unique and patented technologies, IDOL is able to intelligently analyze both the significance of individual syllables and words (semantics) and their higher-level logical crosslinking (ontology). This is the necessary basis for understanding the content of information.
Taxonomy
For various industries such as healthcare or finance, comprehensive, specific classification schemes are available (taxonomies). Newly identified categories are integrated automatically by the adaptive system.
Concept search
By combining semantics, ontologies and taxonomies, IDOL recognizes relationships between the different contents. For comparable Big Data analyses, whole sentences, paragraphs or files can be entered as a search query. The system also finds matching search results in which the search terms themselves do not even appear (meaning-based search).
Video search
IDOL indexes the content of videos without having to resort to metadata. In this way, video files can be searched for words, sentences or even for contexts. Furthermore, IDOL’s video search provides intelligent scene analysis and face recognition functions.
Audio search
Thanks to phonetic and semantic concepts for speech recognition and analysis, IDOL makes audio files searchable with a very high degree of accuracy. The system can handle accents, background noises as well as different volumes and even identify the individual speakers.
Image search
Thanks to the integrated OCR functionality (optical character recognition), IDOL recognizes and analyzes images, graphics or scanned documents. Furthermore, all images of a specific subject or person can be found. The system thereby also recognizes faces, genders, age brackets or facial expressions.
Parametric search
The parametric search function of IDOL enables the search for several attributes and criteria. For example, all employees within the company who are below the age of 30, have specific expert qualifications and work at a specific location can be filtered out.
Sentiment analysis
What do your customers, business partners or investors really think of your company or your products? IDOL recognizes positive and negative comments, emotions and expressions of opinions of people in different sources such as news pages, blogs and social networks as well as other sources. This facilitates a well-founded sentiment analysis.
Clustering
In case of a search query, IDOL creates hierarchical and content-related information clusters. Via these clusters, the users can further limit the search results or find other related information and thus identify hot topics and emerging trends.
Personalization
IDOL recognizes and learns which information is of particular interest for individual users, and prioritizes the search results accordingly. To this end, browser histories are created, among other things, and sought-after contents as well as interactions are analyzed with colleagues.
