We believe that better health care always starts with clinicians improving the lives of their indivi-dual patients. ICHOM is transforming health care by empowering clinicians worldwide to measure and compare their patients’ outcomes and to learn from each other how to improve.

In health care, we’ve spent too much time measuring
what we do – instead of measuring the results we achieve.
WE NEED A NEW
DEFINITION OF SUCCESS
Right now, we rely on process measures to define high-quality health care. But patients want to know how they’ll feel and what they will be able to do after care, not about the guidelines their physicians and care teams follow.
To answer them, we need to change how we define success. If we focus on outcomes, we can help patients truly understand the impact of their treatments. We can answer questions such as, “Will I have long-term pain?” and “Will I be able to participate in normal activities?”
OUTCOMES
HELP PEOPLE MAKE
INFORMED DECISIONS
Reliable outcomes data enable physicians and patients to make better decisions about what treatments are best for them and who should provide them.
OUTCOMES
ENCOURAGE
INNOVATION
Health care is very complex and medical knowledge is changing fast. That‘s why it‘s important that physicians constantly seek new ways to provide better care. A focus on out comes encourages physicians to learn from their peers and test new approaches based on reliable, patient-centered data.
OUTCOMES
REDUCE HEALTH
CARE COSTS
With a clear focus on outcomes, patients are more likely to receive the right treatments, at the right place, at the right time – a recipe for preventing medical errors and unnecessary care, and reducing health care costs.

Patients and their care providers have the same goal: to achieve the best medical outcomes. Measuring outcomes in a standardized way will lead us there. That’s why we’re bringing together inter-national physician leadership and patients to help us identify outcomes standards. Here’s how our process is unique.
A
COLLABORATIVE
APPROACH
WE CREATE A PHYSICIAN-
PATIENT PARTNERSHIP
We involve patients directly in the process. After all, they’re the ones who experience outcomes firsthand. All of our patient repre-sentatives have been treated for the condition they are evaluating.

WE TAKE A MULTI -
DIS CI PLI N ARY APPROACH
We bring together leading clinicians that specialize in treating the condition. These individuals offer expertise from multiple viewpoints and are pioneers in measuring out-comes in their respective countries.
WE PROVIDE A
NEUTRAL PLATFORM
Agreeing on which outcomes matter most and how to define them is a challenging task. We provide a structured process that welcomes the diverse opinions of the Working Group members while still achieving consensus over time.

Over the next five years, we will define Standard Sets for more than 50 conditions, covering the majority of theglobal disease burden in advanced economies.

COLLABORATION
Standardizing health outcomes data globally helps physicians evaluate patients using a uni-versal language. Despite cultural differences, they can learn from one another and apply new, creative solutions to treating patients.
IT REDUCES
HEALTH CARE COSTS
Health care leaders around the world are facing skyrocketing costs. More than ever, we need to know the cost of care and expected outcomes of treatments. A global Standard Set of outco-mes helps us discover new approaches that cost
IT ACCOMMODATES
A GLOBALIZED WORLD
Our world becomes smaller and smaller every day, and health issues travel quickly. It’s our hope that physicians and care teams interna-tionally will connect through patient-centric data to tackle global health problems.

POWERHOUSE TRANSFORMING CARE
Michael E. Porter is the Bishop William Lawrence University Professor at Harvard Business School. He is recognized as a glo-bal leader in strategy and competition, and brings more than two decades of experience developing the Value Framework for health care.
Stefan Larsson is Senior Partner and Mana-ging Director at The Boston Consulting Group, and is head of the firm‘s global health provider and payer sector. In addition, he is a group fellow at The Boston Consulting Group, and leads the firm’s research on the impact and implementation of value-based health care.

THOUGHT LEADERS
Our approach is built on the framework of Value-Based Health Care developed at Harvard Business School by Professor Michael E. Porter. In 2006, Porter and his colleague, Elizabeth Teisberg, wrote the groundbreaking book, Redefining Health Care, which outlines the argument for using health out comes data to shift the nature of competition in health care toward value for patients.
ROOTED IN STRATEGY
One of our founding organizations, The Boston Consulting Group, was the first to introduce competitive strategy to the busi-ness world. Their team brings more than 50 years of experience, a professional culture, and a rigorous approach.
GROUNDED IN THEORY
Our tie to the Karolinska Institutet in Stock-holm, Sweden provides us with a strong foundation in medicine and research. This world-renowned medical university and re-search center is leading the way in health care discoveries. Every year, the Karolinska Institutet appoints the laureates for the No-bel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.
We thank our sponsoring partners believing in our mission and helping us improve patients’ lives.
