THE MOST IMPORTANT ASPECT OF THE GRADUATE ENGINEERING PROGRAMS
AT
RMU IS THAT THEY ALLOW YOU TO GROW PROFESSIONALLY. I’VE LEARNED MANY
TECHNIQUES THAT I’VE BEEN ABLE TO PUT TO USE ALMOST IMMEDIATELY AT MY
PLACE OF WORK.
SUCCESS DOESN’T GET MUCH MORE PRACTICAL THAN THAT.
The School of Engineering, Mathematics and Science
ON THE COVER:
“A technical background gives you the ability to understand what is going on and why things happen, but that will get you only so far. The M.S. in Engineering Management program at RMU helps you to develop your project management, system evaluation and problem-solving skills. A good deal of time is spent working in teams with students from manufacturing, project management and technical consulting backgrounds, helping you to develop the skills you need to be successful in an actual work environment.”

FOR INDIVIDUALS INTERESTED IN ADVANCING

PROVIDE A DISTINCT ADVANTAGE
.
“I got accepted to 10 engineering universities. I decided on RMU because it was a small school, and I thought that I would be able to get individual attention from my professors. It was also a new engineering school that was working to build a strong reputation. I built strong bonds with my professors, which proved beneficial in acquiring my job at Raytheon. Also, RMU focused on ensuring that student and industry needs were met when building the engineering curriculum.”
Nicole Gulan, M.S. in Engineering Management Graduate, Software Engineer, Raytheon
“I’m involved in laser micromachining research for Penn State University in their Electro-Optics Center outside
of Pittsburgh. At Robert Morris, the program is flexible enough that I don’t need to sacrifice my job to get a
Ph.D. I can work full-time and be a full-time student. The program is the perfect fit for location, timing and
the ability to coordinate my Ph.D. research with what I’m doing at work.”
Benjamin R. Campbell, Ph.D. Engineering Student, Research Engineer, Electro-Optics Center, Penn State University
“RMU’s graduate programs in engineering can help you to accelerate or redirect your current career path. The Ph.D. program permits advanced, research-focused study using an executive education model. Students can achieve a terminal degree to enhance their research career or obtain the credentials needed to flourish in an academic environment. The M.S. in Engineering Management sharpens the technical skills needed to advance a particular project, or to advance your management career.“

“In most Ph.D. programs, it takes
six and a half years to finish the
process – and even then, only about
half of the students actually complete
it and get their degree. It is a very
inefficient process. So you might say
that at RMU, we’ve re-engineered the
engineering doctoral degree. Research
is not geared to what the professor
is interested in, but to what
you
are
interested in. It’s student-driven in that
sense. But we also drive the student
to rigorously pursue research. From
the second day, we’re talking about
what your dissertation topic will be.
You are more apt to complete your
degree if your research is on a topic
in which you are genuinely interested.
The freedom the students have is
incredibly exciting.”
Yildirim Omurtag, Ph.D., P.E.,
The Doctor of Philosophy in Engineering (Ph.D.)
The Ph.D. in Engineering at Robert Morris University is an advanced research degree that blends engineering and technical knowledge with enterprise and leadership skills. In addition to its theoretical strength, the program emphasizes applied engineering research for dissertation work that is consistent with RMU’s career-oriented character.
This program is designed to accommodate the needs of the fast-track technical specialist who is working full-time. Although there is no residency requirement for the program, there are required course meetings that take place on campus. This degree is offered
in a cohort or group format with a planned completion period of three years.
The Ph.D. in Engineering is for engineers and other technical professionals with degrees in engineering, mathematics/statistics, hard natural sciences, computer science, operations research and similar fields.
Master of Science (M.S.) in Engineering Management
The M.S. in Engineering Management program prepares you for advancement in technical and managerial fields.
You will learn how to integrate technical, scientific and management knowledge, techniques and skills, so that you can become a management leader. You will be prepared to direct any technological
enterprise while maintaining emphasis on quality, ethics and concern for the environment.
We will help you to acquire the engineering management skills to design, operate and continuously improve systems made up of people, equipment, money, time, information and energy.
As a graduate, you will be able to demonstrate an advanced level of intellectual achievement in the context of engineering projects, and synthesize theory and practice in the design and development of engineering management systems.
If you have a background in engineering, computer science, mathematics or sciences, an M.S. in Engineering Management may be the next logical step in your career.
The M.S. in Engineering Management program is offered in both thesis and non-thesis formats. In the thesis format, faculty will work with you to determine the thesis topic based on your interests. You must complete a minimum of six credit hours of original research in your chosen topic, and you will be required to present your dissertation before a faculty committee. If you select the non-thesis format, you will be required to successfully complete a comprehensive examination. You can select a format based on your interests after enrolling in the program.

“I am a marketing major with an M.B.A., but in my current role as project manager, I needed to add a formal engineering management degree to my experience for future career development. RMU came to my company to teach the M.S. in Engineering Management on-site. They only needed 6 - 8 students, but 25 enrolled in the program. I knew that my future income would be based on having the right education and the right capabilities. Most important to me, the program is comprehensive, yet flexible enough to admit individuals who have engineering management experience but not necessarily an undergrad degree in engineering.”

The Learning Factory:
A Lab at the Center of Learning
The Learning Factory is an industrial-grade laboratory that enables you to take a product from concept to reality using the same state-of-the-art technology found in industry. The facilities are deployed throughout the 7,500-square-foot home of the Engineering Department in John Jay Center, adjacent to faculty offices and teaching classrooms. Students and faculty move freely between classrooms and lab locations without losing their focus.
The Learning Factory includes capabilities for manufacturing automation, metrology, rapid prototyping and materials testing, as well as a fully equipped and networked computer learning center. This facility can be used to support the applied research interests of students who choose to pursue the thesis option of the M.S. in Engineering Management program or the Ph.D. in Engineering Program.
CARES:
The Center for Applied Research in Engineering and Science
The Engineering Department’s concrete connection to local industry is most evident in The Center for Applied Research in Engineering and Science (CARES). The center combines Learning Factory capabilities and faculty expertise to provide local area industries with technical and consulting services such as product/process/system design and development, materials, manufacturing, logistics, hardware/software design and implementation of other technical areas. The center helps to maintain a learning environment that is never far removed from the day-to-day realities of industry.
