ZOOMING REMINDER

Always Worth Repeating

Michelle Power, 2nd VP

To help you open Zoom easily on the night of our meetings, make sure to   look for the link a week before our second Thursday meeting. Register as   soon as you get the link, and be sure to open it on the device you will be   using for the meeting . This will help reduce problems when you are logging   into the meeting. Don't delete the message until AFTER the meeting .   There is also a calendar attachment at the bottom of the registration   confirmation. Clicking on it will add our meeting to the calendar on your   device (depending on your device and mail program, steps may vary). I also   recommend to not delete the registration confirmation until AFTER the   meeting. If you feel so inclined, you could set up a folder in your mail

program labeled "GLHQ Meetings" or similar, to store your meeting invites to   keep your inbox tidy. If you have any questions about Zoom, please reach   out to me and I'll be happy to help you!

Please let me know if you have any questions! Michelle 248-787-3934

RAFFLE QUILT UPDATE

by Donna Armstrong

Thanks to all of you that have completed and submitted your blocks for our raffle quilt, donated for raffle quilt tickets and signed up to complete blocks for both of our quilts. At this time, all of the blocks for "Will You be my Neighbor" have been accounted for. We will have extra blocks, so please feel free to sign up for any of the blocks, but specifically for blocks 2, 3, 4 6,7 8 9,11, 13, 14 and16. We have one sign up for each of these. From what I am seeing, this is going to be an awesome quilt. If we get additional blocks, we can raffle off 2 quilts!!

The "Remixed Geese" quilt is coming along a bit slower. Although all colors have been accounted for, we need 48 blocks to complete a 54x66" quilt and at this point, we have 19 blocks signed up for. I know there was an amazing Paper Piecing class that Cheryl Murphy hosted that would make this block easy, so if you took part in that class, please show us your talent and sign up for a few of the blocks.

I will be at the Birmingham Unitarian Church on Wed. February 10 and March 10 (final day to submit) from 6-6:30 pm to drop your blocks off. You can also drop off your blocks on my front porch any time. Please text me if you plan on dropping them off, so that I know they are on my porch. 31800 Arlington Dr. Beverly Hills, MI 48025. You can also mail me your blocks to the same address. Please make your check out to GLHQ for the amount listed on the sign-up link and send me a message that you have mailed them (248.514.8011).

Which block(s) will you make? Here’s how to sign up:

Neighborhood Quilt: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/4090A4DAFA72FA13-glhq

Flying Geese Remix: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/4090A4DAFA72FA13-glhq1

And here are the patterns:

QUILT # 1 : The first quilt will be a rendition of what we all have been going through

most of 2020 - "AT HOME". Pick any block from Moda's free pattern "Will You Be   my Neighbor". I have added the link to Pat Sloan's web page that gives the   directions for all 16 blocks. All the blocks are between 9"x 18" - 21"x18" Please   square them up to the appropriate size. We will be using an assortment of colors   from our new GLHQ logo (Red, Orange, Yellow, Green and Blue) with a white   background.

https://www.ilovetomakequilts.com/will-you-be-my-neighbor-block-page.html

QUILT # 2: The second quilt will be a combination of past and future. Since Donna

Tarnas was key to the creation of our new logo, we reached out to her for input. I

was not aware, but the five flying geese in the logo represent the five Great Lakes   and they are flying north because that’s where Michigan is! Up north. This will   represent the future. When the quilt is constructed, we will add an applique of   Michigan, from our previous logo, and that will represent the past. As with the 1st   quilt, we will be using a combination of our new logo colors to create the flying   geese blocks in the quilt shown below. Please be creative with lots of solids and   prints of the logo colors, (Red, Orange, Yellow, Green and Blue). We will be using the   free Robert Kaufman "Remixed Geese" pattern. Please square each block to 3.5"x   6.5" and sew 2 matching geese together.

Quilt Challenge 2020-2021

Julie Krauss and Cheryl Murphy

This year we will enter the ‘Art Quilt” arena with the Sun   and Moon challenge. Each quilted project must contain at   least one of these two design elements or both and one of   the design elements should be prominent in the design of   the piece. These are design elements, not quilting.

However it must be a quilt not a tied project. It must contain 3 layers, top,   batting, and backing, joined by hand or machine stitching.

● Maximum size 48”x72” or Lap size, Minimum 24” x 24” or   similar size.

● NO clothing, purses, mug rugs, table runners, tote bags or   bed quilt sizes will be accepted.

● Quilted design only is not an acceptable entry , it must   be the main design element and the prominent focus.

● Two entries may be submitted

● Please do not label your quilt at the time of submission

Our June 2021 meeting will be the deadline as usual. This is   meant to be a creative and out of the box challenge. Have   fun and CREATE!

Haven

by Carol Brooks

Well the holidays are over and we’ve started a new year. I hope everyone enjoyed the holidays as best they could and are looking forward to a bright and wonderful new year. I want to thank everyone for their donations last month. I took $900 worth of clothes, toys, gift cards, and checks to Haven before Christmas. I asked the people at Haven what they really needed most at this time and they said they really could use cereals and snacks. I also thought we might concentrate on children’s clothing, any size, any age, and for both girls and boys. Remember they must be new. Anything you would like to donate would be greatly appreciated.

Looking forward to seeing everyone at the January meeting.

I will be at the church on January 16 from 1-2 to pick up anything someone might want to donate.

Charity

by Bonnie Pennybacker and Maxine Pirtle

We hope everyone had a safe, healthy, and wonderful Christmas and New Year. We are working on a date for a February quilt pick up so everyone still has plenty of time to finish or make charity quilts. We will

take any and all sizes.

Mystery Quilt Day

by Cheryl Murphy and Joyce Montante

MQD events have begun! The design options, cutting instructions and first sewing   a clue have gone out via email to those who have signed up. If you have not yet   signed up, it is not too late. Send your $20 check to Joyce Montante today and she   will get you set up. We are starting at a nice slow pace, and you can catch up easily.   For those who have signed up and contributed to Haven, thank you very much!   Joyce reports we have collected at least $800, which is fantastic. We really hope   you can join in or contribute to support Haven even if you choose not to start the   event with us yet. The need is great, especially in 2021. You’ll still receive

instructions and clues and can start at any time.
