Life and Critical Illness Benefits

Life Insurance

Benefit is payable on the death of the Member or their partner who are covered by the scheme.

The scheme is written in Trust, this means the proceeds can be paid by the Trustees to the Member’s dependants quickly, free of tax and without having to wait for Probate.

Members should ensure that they have an up to date beneficiary and have logged the details with the Federation office.

Terminal Illness Benefit

If a Member under the age of 64 years is diagnosed as having an illness or injury, from which they are expected to die within the next 12 months, they may apply for 49% of the life assurance benefit.

Critical Illness Benefits

The scheme benefit will be payable if a Member or partner under the age of 70, or their child of above 6 months and under 17 years of age, suffers from an insured illness and survives for more than 28 days from the date of diagnosis or surgery. The below listed illnesses are covered:

l Aplastic Anaemia – with permanent bone marrow failure l Alzheimer’s Disease – resulting in permanent symptoms l Bacterial Meningitis – resulting in permanent neurological deficit l Benign Brain Tumour – resulting in permanent symptoms l Blindness – permanent and irreversible

l Burns – third degree covering 20% of the body surface l Cancer – excluding less advanced cases

l Cardiomyopathy – of specified severity l Chronic Liver Disease

l Chronic Rheumatoid Arthritis – resulting in the loss of the ability to do specified activities l Coma – resulting in permanent symptoms

l Coronary Artery By-Pass Graft – with surgery to divide the breastbone l Creutzfeldt-Jacob Disease (CJD) – resulting in permanent symptoms l Dementia/pre-senile dementia – resulting in permanent symptoms l Encephalitis – resulting in permanent symptoms

l Heart Attack – of specified severity

l Heart Valve Replacement of Repair – resulting in permanent symptoms

l Hepatitis B – Serving Members only – resulting from the member carrying out their normal occupation

l HIV infection – contracted in the EU from blood transfusion, physical assault or the Member carrying out their normal occupation as a serving Member l Kidney Failure – requiring dialysis

l Loss of Hearing – permanent and irreversible l Loss of Speech – permanent and irreversible l Loss of a hand or foot – permanent physical severance l Major Organ transplant

l Multiple Sclerosis – with persisting symptoms

A pre existing condition exclusion applies together with other terms and conditions. Claims must be notified within 90 days.

Worldwide Family Travel Insurance

This policy covers the Member, their partner and any number of their dependant children under 18 years of age, or under 21 years of age if in full time education, irrespective of whether such child normally resides with the Member. Independent travel in respect of dependent children shall only apply to those children who normally reside with the Member.

Grandchildren under the age of 17 are also covered as long as their own parents are not also travelling.

There are no restrictions on the number of trips you can take; the maximum duration of any one trip shall be 60 days. Cover for trips of a longer duration can be considered on an individual basis.

An excess of £35 per person is applicable for most policy sections.

Legal Assistance Summary

Costs of up to *£100,000 per claim are covered. * Where the matter proceeds to Crown Court cover will be unlimited, but no more than the maximum contribution authorised under the Crown Court means Testing scheme.

*An inner limit of £20,000 applies in respect of Policy Section 2 - Disciplinary Hearings. *An inner limit of £25,000 applies in respect of Policy Section 7 – Personal Injury where the incident occurs worldwide.

*In respect of Policy Section 19 – Bankruptcy, costs of the bankruptcy filing fee and deposit towards the administration of your Bankruptcy are covered.

It is a general requirement that there should be reasonable prospects of success in taking legal action before a claim can be accepted.

There is no cover:

n Where you are entitled to funding for legal assistance from the Police Federation, the Superintendents Association, the Association of Chief Police Officers, the Police Service, the chief officer, a trade union, or an employer, unless such funding is declined or withdrawn

n For claims made by a police officer above the rank of Chief Inspector who is not in the Superintendents Association, the Association of Chief Police Officers or any other relevant organisation for matters that would be covered if they were members n For costs that have not been agreed in writing n For claims arising from disputes between someone

you live with or have lived with

n Where you fail to comply with the conditions of this insurance

n For any insured incident intentionally brought about by you or any prosecution deliberately solicited by you

There is no cover for claims arising from parking offences which you do not get penalty points on your licence for or made by any insured person other than the member and partner living with the member unless the claim is for the defence of a motoring prosecution. There is no cover for any

claims:-n For any amount you are ordered to pay in excess of the pre-conviction income based contribution under the Crown Court Means Testing scheme or; n Where you do not apply for a representation order or; n Where you do not keep to the terms of the

representation order or;

n Where you do not provide the information requested or;

n Where you do not use an adviser that can act under the terms of a Representation Order under the Crown Court Means Testing scheme.

There is no cover for any claim arising from illness, personal injury or

death which is caused gradually or is not caused by a specific event or

anything to do with your activities as a police officer or police staff member.

There is no cover for anything to do with your activities as a police officer or police staff member or any dispute which is only about the amount of redundancy pay or anything to do with subcontracting or a contract for services if you are self employed.

There is no cover for any claim:

n Where the dispute is to do with a contract you entered into before the start of this policy or,

n Where the amount in dispute is less than £50 or; n Where there is a dispute with an insurer or other financial services supplier arising from the sale or performance of products and services or the amount of money or other compensation due under an insurance policy.

There is no cover for claims arising from divorce or matrimonial matters.

There is no cover to do with the non payment of rent.

There is no cover for claims arising from a road accident if the event is not covered under your motor insurance.

There is no cover for claims arising out of a contract you have with another person or organisation.

There is no cover for claims:

n For investigations relating to alleged criminal activities or;

n For anything to do with investigations by HM Revenue and Customs Special Compliance Office or Special Investigations Section or;

n For any appeal where you are only being investigated because you have been investigated before or; n or anything to do with your business activities unless it is about:

n your wages or salary as an employee or; n your letting of a residential property and you are

letting only one property at any one time.

To make a claim

Costs to:

Defend a legal action following an event which results in civil proceedings being brought against you over the way you have kept or used personal information about another person or organisation.

Costs to:

Appeal against the decision of a Local Education Authority (LEA) arising out of the LEA’s failure to conform with its published admission policy, which leads to your child or children being refused entry at the state school of your choice.

Costs to:

Pursue a legal action by you in respect of a probate dispute involving the will of your deceased parents, grandparents, children, step-children or adopted children where you are contesting a will as a named beneficiary or as a member of a class of beneficiaries with an immediate interest.

Costs to:

Deal with organisations that fraudulently apply for credit in your name and to defend proceedings, reverse incorrect judgements and challenge consumer credit ratings resulting from Identity Fraud.

Costs to:

Represent you in a dispute which you have with the police or other public agency in the event that your vehicle is seized following a failure in communication between your motor insurance representative and the Motor Insurance Database which results in incorrect information about you or your vehicle being recorded on that database. The fee required (where payable) for filing for Bankruptcy (a Debtors Petition) and the deposit towards the administration of your Bankruptcy.

Costs to:

n Write one letter to the provider of a Social Media website following defamatory comments being made about you on that website to request that the comments are removed.

n Write one letter to the author (where the authors’ identity of the defamatory comments is known) requesting that the comments are removed from the social media website.

Costs to:

Defend a legal action arising from use of the identity of a vehicle owned by you by another person or organisation without your permission.

claims:-n Where examinations or other selection criteria are part of the acceptance process or;

n Where the process for appealing against the decision to refuse a place at the school has not been adhered to There is no cover for claims arising from any dispute or costs where a will has not been previously made or concluded or cannot

be traced (Intestate).

There is no cover for

claims:-n Where you have claims:-not beeclaims:-n the victim of Ideclaims:-ntity Fraud or; n Where you did not take reasonable precautions against

Identity Fraud or take action to protect yourself from Identity Fraud or;

n Where the Identity Fraud has been carried out by somebody living with you or;

n For advisers’ costs arising from loss of cash from a bank, building society, credit union or other similar financial institution where that institution has refused to cover the loss or;

n For any losses other than advisers’ costs incurred by you as a result of Identity Fraud

It is a condition of this cover, that you must contact the Lifestyle Counselling Helpline on 0800 177 7894 and obtain advice on the best course of action before making a claim under this section.You will need to produce evidence to show that you have obtained this advice before a claim under this section will be paid. There is no cover for claims where you are not aged 18 years or over.

Motor Breakdown Summary

Roadside help

If your vehicle cannot be driven because of a breakdown, we will arrange for a vehicle rescue operator to spend up to one hour to try to fix it. If it cannot be fixed, we will arrange for the vehicle to be taken to a local garage to be repaired at your cost.

Nationwide recovery in the UK

As well as the benefits above, if your vehicle cannot be repaired at the roadside or at a local garage the same day, we will arrange one of the following. n For the vehicle, driver and up to six passengers to be taken to your destination or home.

n Bed-and-breakfast accommodation for one night. n To hire another vehicle.

An emergency driver is also available under this section.

Homestart in the UK

If your vehicle cannot be driven because of a breakdown at or within one mile of your home, we will arrange for a vehicle rescue operator to spend up to one hour to try to fix it. If it cannot be fixed, we will arrange for the vehicle to be taken to a local garage to be repaired at your cost.

European help

If your vehicle cannot be driven because of a breakdown in Europe (including the UK part of your journey), we will arrange for a vehicle rescue operator to spend up to one hour to try to fix it. If it cannot be fixed, we will arrange for the vehicle to be taken to a garage to be repaired at your cost. It also includes: 1. delivering replacement parts;

2. other travel arrangements; 3. emergency car hire; 4. emergency accommodation; 5. an emergency driver; and 6. vehicle recovery to the UK.

This will only apply if you continue to pay your monthly premium.

Transport to a local garage is for the vehicle, driver and up to six passengers.

We will not cover a breakdown at or within one mile away from your home.

Within the UK only. We will not cover a breakdown at or within one mile away from your home.

We will pay up to £40 per person for bed and breakfast (£280 in total).

Making a Claim

If you need Breakdown Assistance in the UK, please call: 0844 770 3103 or: +44 (0) 1737 815393 if you require European Breakdown Assistance.

You should have the following information available: Vehicle registration number, your name and home post code, your policy number, vehicle make, model and colour, your location, an indication of the nature of the problem. You will also be asked to quote your warrant / collar number and also your policy number which is: 10159/619.

Personal Policies cover breakdown assistance for the Member/partner who must be travelling in a vehicle that meets the criteria specified in the policy document.

Domestic Emergency Summary

If you suffer a Covered Event at your property you should tell us on the Emergency Telephone Number. We will then;

a) Advise you how to protect yourself and the Property immediately; organise and pay up to £500 per claim including VAT, call out, labour, parts and materials to carry out an Emergency Temporary Repair, or if at a similar expense an Emergency Permanent Repair.

If the temporary repair will cost more than £500 including VAT to complete, we will advise you how much, in total, the repair will cost. We will proceed with the repair only if you agree to pay for the amount over £500.

b) In the event of the Property becoming uninhabitable and remaining so overnight because of the Covered Event, we will, subject to prior agreement with ourselves, pay up to £100 including VAT in total for your overnight accommodation and/or transport to such accommodation.

The Covered Events are listed below:

a) Plumbing problems relating to leaking pipes, blocked drains or leaking radiators b) Blockages in toilet waste pipes

c) Gas or electricity complete failure within the Property d) Central heating or boiler failure

e) Hot water failure

f) Animals or insects that are destructive in their natural behaviour or considered pests or nuisances: brown rats, black rats, house mice, field mice, squirrels, wasp & hornet’s nests only

g) Keys, permanent and irreplaceable loss of all keys required to gain access to the Property not including outbuildings h) Broken or damaged windows, doors and locks presenting a security risk to the property

i) Roofing, sudden and unforeseen roofing problems such as leaks or tiles blown off during a storm or bad weather There are Conditions and Exclusions which limit your cover, we do not wish you to discover after an incident has occurred that it is not insured.

The following are excluded from the insurance:

l Any leaking or dripping tap that requires a new washer or replacing external overflows or replacing of boilers, cylinders, tanks,

radiators and sanitary ware

l External overflows, external guttering

l Burst or leaking flexible hoses which can be isolated or leaking washing appliances. l External water supply pipes after the internal stop tap

l Septic tanks, swimming pool installations

l Failure of boilers or heating systems that have not been inspected or serviced by a qualified person within the preceding 12

months, you may be asked to produce the evidence at the time of the claim

l Boilers over 15 years old

l Boilers that are Beyond Economical Repair

l LPG fuelled, oil fired, solid fuel fired, warm air, solar and un-vented hot water systems l Shared water/drainage facilities

l Material/labour charges covered by manufacturer/supplier/installer’s

l Replacement of light bulbs and fuses in plugs. Any failure of electricity that affects only part of the Property l Loss of keys for outbuildings garages and sheds.

l Descaling and any work arising from hard water scale deposits (including power flushing) or from damage caused by aggressive

water or sludge resulting from corrosion. Signs that work is needed may include a noisy boiler, sludged up pipes or poor circulation.

l Breakdown or loss of or damage to domestic appliances (including showers), saniflow toilets and other mechanical equipment. l Any breakdown to flushing mechanism of toilets

l Damage to boundary walls, hedges, fences or gates

l Pests outside the main dwelling e.g. in garages and other outbuildings

l Electricity supply to, or failure of burglar/fire alarm systems, CCTV surveillance or to swimming pools and their plumbing or

filtration systems

Lifestyle Counselling Helpline & Online Support Service

At some stage in their lives most people require advice and information on workplace and personal issues, but it can often be difficult to know where to start looking. The pressure of daily life can sometimes be stressful, but having access to the right advice and information can be helpful in combating such pressures. Arc Legal Assistance, in partnership with Care First, now provide a lifestyle information and advice service via an online information library and a 24/7 information and counselling helpline service. The Care First online service provides an online library of resources, developed and maintained by a team of professionals. The online resource offers immediate information, answers and advice for a wide range of personal issues such as finance management, childcare and relationship advice, as well as a range of health guides and tips. Resources for work related issues are also available, such as returning to work after illness, planning for retirement and working effectively. To complement the online resource, we provide access to a confidential 24/7 counselling and information helpline. Expert advisors, trained by Citizens Advice, are at hand to provide comprehensive answers and assistance on a wide range of issues. The following are examples of the type of real life questions that Care First advisers can provide advice on:

n I have been rejected for credit, can I find out why? n Am I entitled to any kind of support to pay for childcare?

n I am going on holiday abroad, will I require vaccinations before I go?

The helpline can also provide access to a telephone counselling service to provide instant support, advice and counselling on workplace or personal issues. All Care First counsellors are accredited to the British Associate for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP). The Care First counsellors are available to provide support for a range of issues, such as bereavement, relationships problems, stress and work-loads. The service is confidential and impartial. No one will be informed that the caller has contacted Care First, and the caller doesn’t even need to give a name if they do not want to.

Claim Procedure

To make a claim under the Legal Expenses, Motor Breakdown, Home Emergency Assistance please refer to the emergency telephone numbers contained within this booklet.

Claims for emergency medical treatment under the travel policy please contact the assistance company within this booklet. All other travel claims should be reported direct to Forces Financial on 0844 324 4033.

All other claims should be reported to the Federation Office on 0161 355 4400 who will provide a claim form and further guidance on how to make a claim.

Immediate notice must be given of any event which a Member believes is likely to give rise to a claim. Please note, all claims should be reported in good time, and in any case within 6 months from the date the incident arose, except for Court Award Compensation claims which can only be claimed for, if after 6 months you have not been paid by the defendant.

If the complaint is in relation to those matters within the control of Forces Financial we will deal with the issue immediately. If the matter is one which should be referred to the insurer, we will assist you to progress the complaint and continue to offer you support until the matter has been resolved.

Financial Services Compensation Scheme

In the unlikely event that the Insurers are unable to meet their liabilities, you may be able to claim compensation from the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS). Further Information on this can be obtained from the FCA or the FSCS.

Cancellation

Members joining may cancel their cover within 30 days of joining and receive a refund of premium, subject to no claims being made. You may cancel your cover at any time by stopping your salary deductions.
