PROTECTING THE ENVIRONMENT:

THE SCOTT PAINT COMMITMENT

Since 1965, Scott Paint has been committed to developing high

perfor-mance products that are environmentally conscious. From the very

beginning, we’ve focused research on the latest advances in

water-based resin and emulsion technologies that are inherently non-toxic. We

manufacture all of our paints to be completely lead and mercury free, to

safeguard the health of our customers, employees, their families, and

our environment.

Our state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Sarasota operates at a

zero toxic waste status. We formulate our products to minimize waste

in manufacturing. In fact, our innovations in recycling have led us to

develop and operate Latex Paint Recycling Programs that are currently

used by many Florida counties. We further minimize the use of virgin

raw materials by utilizing recycled content packaging and containers

whenever possible.

In 1999, the federal government issued strict guidelines regulating the

levels of VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) in many paints. Scott Paint

immediately responded. Nearly forty years of manufacturing expertise

has allowed us to continue to produce the high quality products our

customers expect and deserve, while remaining fully compliant with all

local, state and federal regulations. In response to concerns

regard-ing VOCs, several “no VOC” products have entered the market. Scott

Paint’s Research and Development team is exploring new

manufactur-ing and raw material technologies to develop no VOC products without

sacrificing quality. Currently, we have reformulated our Scrubmaster

®

line of scrubbable interior wall finishes to be odor free and contain very

low VOCs. Scott Paint’s Allgrip line of 100% acrylic enamels was, and

remains, very low odor and low VOC.

Scott Paint will continue to develop products to perform in Florida’s

harsh climate while protecting Florida’s delicate ecosystem. Should you

have any questions or need information about the composition of any

Scott paint, please call 1-800-282-2016 for customer service, or contact

us at www.scottpaint.com.

SCOTT PAINT GUIDE FOR BUILDERS

TO ACHIEVE A SUCCESSFUL PAINT JOB

1. Work with Scott Paint to write tight specifications.

2. Communicate specifications in writing to paint contractors to bid apples

to apples.

3. Specify that all paint is to be applied “to full opacity”, avoiding telling the painter how to paint. This eliminates arguments about how many coats.

4. Insist on factory sealed and labeled containers.

5. On exteriors, specify a separate prime coat using two different products to assure two separate coats. Spraying and “backrolling” is not an ac-ceptable “two coat” system.

6. Stucco must be properly applied, hydrated, and cured for paint suc-cess. Stucco is a highly alkaline substrate that can take up to one year for thorough curing, and alkalinity neutralization. The Florida Cement & Products Association recommends 30 days minimum curing before

painting to avoid efflorescence and paint burn-out. Being practical,

stucco should be cured a minimum of 10 days to 3 weeks, but always to a pH level below 11 when tested with a phenalphaline solution or pH pencil.

7. Even when properly cured, an alkali resistant Scott primer, such as Scott Ultra 100% Acrylic Stucco Primer #405 or Acry-Prime #305 100% Acrylic Stucco Primer must be used. Only a specially formulated primer and separate topcoat system can improve resistance to premature fade and

efflorescence.

8. Some colors are extremely fade prone while some are fade resistant. Consult with Scott Paint before specifying colors to achieve maximum durability.

9. Do not paint wet or damp wood; or when rain is imminent. The paint will eventually peel.

10. Beware of dew! Wait until late morning or when the sun has dried the surface before painting.

11. Sometimes two coats are not enough to achieve full opacity, depend-ing upon color and substrate. Insist that the painter apply paint “to full opacity”.

12. If interior wall scrubbability or washability is important, prime the new drywall and use two coats of paint. Ultimately, the Scott Scrubmaster®

system guarantees scrubbability.

13. Refer to “Levels of Drywall Finish” issued by the drywall and paint

industries for guidance on proper drywall finishing.

HOW BUILDERS CAN ACHIEVE

WASHABLE INTERIOR WALLS

The washability and scrubbability of your interior latex wall

finish is dependent upon the integrity of the drywall texture

that the paint is applied to. Standard, commonly acceptable

drywall texture is a very loose and powdery mixture that is little

more than field applied chalk. There is a simple, yet important

step that can be taken to improve the quality of the texture. To

make it less porous and adherent, its cohesive strength must

be improved. This can be accomplished with the following

addition:

To every 100 gallon batch of spray applied texture, add 5

gal-lons of Scott Cretex Latex Emulsion. This is the same

emul-sion (resin) that is used in many Scott latex interior paints as

the binder.

Cretex is available at all Scott stores in 5 gallon plastic pails.

The addition of 5 gallons of Cretex “glues together” or binds the

powdery particles tighter, thereby increasing its density,

adhe-sion and coheadhe-sion to provide a more sound base for any latex

paint. Without this additive, you can expect great difficulties

with the adhesion of wallcoverings and paints to the drywall

surface. Scott Paint accepts no responsibility whatsoever for

the performance of its interior latex flats over drywall texture

that has not included this additive.

Many Scott paints, including Scrubmaster

®

and DOT line Z-30

and Z-40 can provide superior washability when applied to a

tight, well adhered drywall texture. Make sure your

homebuy-ers gets what they pay for by reinforcing your texture with

Scott Cretex.

PREVENTING MILDEW AND ALGAE

Mildew and algae are airborne living organisms that can blemish the appearance of almost any building material, especially paint. Mildew and algae growth is sporadic and inconsistent. Out of ten homes prepared and painted the same way with the same paints, nine may look beautiful for many years while one may develop mildew or algae contamination, or both. To give you the best chance of avoiding mildew and algae contamination, we want you to understand what it is and what preparation is needed to resist its growth. Mildew is a fungus, whereas

algae is a plant. Mildew is identifiable as a blackish gray stain that appears like

dirt, but doesn’t come off with detergent. Algae typically is green, dark blue, red, or orange, which also does not remove with detergent. Both mildew and algae need 3 things to grow: warmth, moisture, and nutrients (food). Florida is known for its heat and moisture. This is why Florida is known as a mildew prone state. As a nutrient, mildew can feed off of anything, including unprotected paint. Even new lumber from the mill may have gotten wet while stored and can be an excellent source of mildew nutrients, as the cellulose that makes up the wood

fiber is very digestible to the spores. To avoid the conditions that aid mildew

and algae growth, do the following:

1. Test dirt stains for mildew or algae by dabbing on some undiluted swimming pool chlorine (sodium hypochlorite) without scrubbing. If the stain disap-pears within 2 to 3 minutes, it is algae or mildew, not dirt.

2. Always prepare the surface for painting by pressure cleaning the surface with a solution of water and 15% chlorine. If pressure washing is not practical, the use of a Hudson sprayer and a scrub brush using the same 15% solu-tion of chlorine and water will do the trick. After treating with the chlorine solution, pressure wash again with clean water or low pressure, rinse and

then let dry. If signs of mildew or algae remain after the first cleaning, repeat

until the surface is clean.

3. Even wood that is new should be treated with the solution of water and chlorine to kill any latent mildew spores.

4. As mildew can occur on home interiors, use the same chlorine and water solution to remove interior staining and then let dry before painting. In homes where air conditioning is not regularly used, high humidity levels combined with poor air circulation provide conditions that are ideal for the growth of mildew. If leaving a home for the summer, leave the air condition-ing system on, set at 80º so that it occasionally comes on to reduce humidity and improve circulation.

5. After the surface is completely clean and free of algae or mildew, use Scott Ultra 100% Acrylic Supercoat. You cannot buy or specify a better paint for beating mildew than Ultra.

Even under the best conditions and after using Scott Paint, it is a good idea to occasionally wash your building down with a light chlorine solution every second or third year. Keeping the building free of dirt, insect contamination,

and salt residues can add years to the life of the paint film while maintaining an

attractive appearance. See the Scott solution sheet “Extending Paint Life” for further information.

TOUCH-UP PROBLEM?

When people have a touch-up problem with latex flat wall paints, they usually

come in two varieties:

1. A color difference when you’re looking directly at the wall at a 90° angle.

2. Sheen or burnishing type problems when you look directly down a long sight wall towards a glass door or window at the end.

These are two entirely different problems with two very separate and distinct solutions.

First, the color touch-up problem. Almost always these touch-up problems ap -pear light in comparison to the surrounding wall. This is usually because of two issues.

1. The wrong paint has been used, or

2. The first coat of paint did not fully opacify (hide) the surface and the

touch-up appears lighter because it is a fully hiding second coat. This is especially true on attempted one coat paint jobs on new drywall. We at Scott Paint are proud of the hiding and touch-up qualities of all of our

interior latex flats. When used properly and applied to full opacity, you should not have a touch-up problem when viewed head on. Slick finish or textured drywall in new construction is a highly porous, paint absorbent, gray colored paper that is very difficult to hide completely in one coat, regardless of paint quality. When you airless spray or roll one coat, enough paint must be applied

to fully hide the substrate.

The second problem, that of looking along a wall towards a window, usually looks great when viewed directly, but shows up as a halo or sheen difference

when viewed at the angle. These conditions will show a raised area of thicker

paint where touch-ups are performed, which will indeed show a difference in sheen and appearance. When using a brush, it is virtually impossible for a sight

wall to touch-up without a slight ridge being noticed and a halo effect occurring. Our experience is that the best way to touch-up these sight walls is by using a

Whizz Brand Mini Roller, rolling the paint out to avoid an excessive thickness.

The Whizz roller texture blends in much better than using a brush to touch-up.

Touching up new construction interior walls is at best a difficult task. Scott Paint

Company cannot guarantee the touch-upability of its paint on one coat jobs on

new drywall. For best results, we recommend the use of the proper Scott latex drywall primer. Applying sufficient paint thickness with an airless sprayer can

be achieved with any Scott paint with proper attention and care. Then

backroll-ing should eliminate most common touch-up problems in the field. Ultimately,

virtually every touch-up problem disappears after the paint is allowed to fully

cure and the dwelling units are completed with furniture, carpets, draperies, etc. to minimize the bouncing around of reflected light.

HOW TO RESIST STEEL RUSTING

When painting steel, the goal is to cosmetically enhance its appearance

while providing protection to retard and slow its natural corrosion process.

Atmosphere conditions in Florida make corrosion resistant systems a

chal-lenge. In addition to moisture and oxygen, sodium chloride ions and salt

laden air attack steel immediately upon exposure. Adhering to the following

steps is essential when corrosion resistance is required:

1. Sand blast, wire wheel, or wire brush all crusty, mill scaled surfaces

to a smooth, rust-free condition. Ultimately, sand blasting to an

SSPC 6 commercial blast is superior to hand techniques of rust

removal. Any rust not removed will continue to corrode underneath

new coating systems.

2. Immediately wipe down the prepared surface with xylene or MEK to

remove residues, dust, and grease, and let dry. Then immediately

apply one spot coat of Scott Rust-Blok Industrial Rust Inhibitive

Alkyd Primer #941 to all of the exposed areas, welds, 90° bends,

pipe threads, and pitted areas.

4. Apply a full coat of Rust-Blok Primer to the entire surface by brush,

roller, or spray, taking care to lay the product on so that no brush

marks show. When priming, thicker is better. Because of

atmo-spheric conditions, the first coat of primer should be applied on

the same day that the steel is cleaned.

5. Apply two coats of the prescribed alkyd finish coat, leaving a total

system of three coats over all metal and four coats over the worst

spot-primed areas. The goal is to build up sufficient mil thickness

in separate coats so as to minimize skips, holidays, and thin spots.

When using an acrylic topcoat, repeat step 4 for two full coats of

primer after spot priming.

While three coats over all metal and four coats over the worst areas may

seem excessive, it has been proven that two coats as a system is

insuf-ficient for proper metal protection in Florida.

Because the variables of coating metal are so extreme, Scott Paint

Com-pany can make no guarantee of success as to the longevity of the system

against rusting. However, by following this guideline, you will go a long

way to having a totally sealed, moisture and salt resistant surface that may

last for many years to your satisfaction.

Exception: Galvanized steel should never be primed with alkyd paints.

Refer to the Scott Solutions sheet on painting galvanized steel.
