Across the world the opportunities for a career in international tourism and hospitality are considerable. A solid Masters course is a pathway to many different types of employment including working in tourist attractions, transport businesses, accommodation properties, cruise operations, casinos and other commercial businesses both at a small and large scale. Importantly, public sector employment in management agencies and civic authorities is expanding as governments across the globe have to manage tourism sustainably to benefit the entire community and conserve their environmental resources. The MITHM at James Cook University provides coverage of key topics to build a career and employment options in the expanding global business of tourism, entertainment and associated forms of hospitality. The degree is structured around the IDEA concept – Introduction, Development of topics, Enhancement of
knowledge and Application –thus building knowledge and sophistication at the Masters level as the student progresses through the program. A feature of the program is a skill building introductory subject and the opportunity to apply the core knowledge learned in the degree in a final capstone subject.
The theme of sustainability runs throughout the course. Graduates can expect to not only enhance their knowledge but also build strong graduate attributes in areas such as the ability to apply knowledge, interpersonal communication, cultural awareness, problem solving and creativity. Subject coordinators in this program include world class leaders in tourism research and education including Professor Philip Pearce, Professor Bruce Prideaux and other senior level JCU researchers and educators. The structure of the degree enables some candidates to opt for a Graduate Certificate
in International Hospitality Management as a first level of qualification (4 subjects), a Graduate Diploma in International Hospitality Management (8 subjects) or combine the full 12 subject
MITHM with the MBA resulting in a joint MBA–MITHM (16 subjects). Students who perform well in the MITHM can develop a pathway to undertake PhD level work.

“The vast array of course elements of MITHM
instilled a foundational understanding of the
international tourism and hospitality management
industry. I have acquired the skills to critically think
with a global mindset. As part of my degree I enrolled
in an internship at a Destination Management
Organization (DMO).
This provided me the opportunity to apply the skills
and theories obtained over the course of my studies, as
well as gain new ones. I am beyond satisfied with my
employment prospective upon graduation.”

Masters in International Tourism and Hospitality Management/ Masters of Business Administration
The MBA (International Tourism) is a distinctive offering available only at the JCU Townsville campus (the largest and oldest of the JCU locations). The International Tourism major consists of 4 subjects which are all taught by leading national and international tourism academics. Undertaking the International Tourism major in the MBA offers a distinctive flavour and identity to the well known MBA qualification and thus facilitates employment in administrative, managerial and leadership roles in either the commercial or public tourism field. There is a powerful emphasis on sustainability in its multiple forms (economic, socio-cultural, environmental, governance) in the International Tourism major. The educators in this program have worked at JCU for several years and together have built a major with complementary material and approaches. A feature of the degree is the opportunity to see the
development and management of tourism by undertaking significant field trip work covering the environments of the tropics (both reef and rainforest). Additionally in the broader MBA program, of which the International Tourism major is a part, there is a study tour to China. Graduates can expect not only to enhance their knowledge but also to build strong attributes in areas such as the ability to apply knowledge, strategic thinking, cultural awareness, problem solving and creativity. There is a clear interaction in the 4 specialist tourism subjects between local examples of tourism issues and international case studies. The application of leading concepts and ideas to inform and resolve tourism challenges is stressed. The classes are typically characterised by students from many locations not limited to but including Australia, various parts of Asia, Europe and South America.
Educators in this program include world class leaders in tourism research and education including Professor Philip Pearce, Professor Gianna Moscardo, Professor Bruce Prideaux
and other senior level JCU researchers and educators. Students who perform well in the MBA (International Tourism) can develop a pathway to undertake PhD level work.
