1. What previous experience have you had in the area in which you are applying for?

Previously, I attended Rio Hondo Community College. I was President of the National Honor Society on campus, which was the largest organization on campus. I was in charge of enforcing our strict 20 hr participation, 20 hr volunteer, and 3.0 GPA guidelines. We always had high amounts of applications which I reviewed and had to make the final decision of their acceptance. I also had to speak to our managerial committee to be able to get funds and support for our events. We had to present our objective in front of a council then get voted on in order to receive School funds. I was able to receive funding for all of my events as well as our conferences around California. In my position, I learned to interact with other students and board members where sometimes we came to a compromise, but we still obtained the main goals.

2. State briefly why are you are applying and/or are interested in this position

I am interested in this position because I want to be more involved on campus as well as be able to help organizations and students be more involved on campus. As the Vice President of Administration I would be part of Spirit initiatives to help everyone be a part of what we do. We also touch basis on veteran services which I feel very strongly on supporting. My previous experiences have been very influential on the person I am today. I enjoy helping others and providing them with the information they need to get things done. I would love to be more involved on what direction we take as a campus and being a part of ASI as Vice President of Administration would help me achieve that.

3. What do you feel are some of the major problems facing the students of CSULA?

Many issues that students face is lack of information. Most students have issues on campus, but are not sure how to address them. Students have the power to make changes on campus and need the tools to do so. Clubs and organizations should have better access to information online. Now, everything is digitized and there should be more online support for everyone to have their questions answered. For example, their is funding available for clubs outside of their own money. If a club wants the campus to fund an event, they have to present a plan and budget to the council which will then vote on it. Although this is available, most student clubs are not aware of this opportunity. This lack of information could cause a club to miss out on an important event if they don’t have the funds to pay for it themselves. There should be more communication waits the students and the resources available to them.

4. List activities and/or organizations that you have been involved with (on or off campus)

On Campus:

Maximizing Academics and Success in Science Secretary (MASS) - Secretary Chemistry and Biochemistry Club -Member

MORE Programs - Bridges to the Future, RISE scholar and MARC*Star Fellow LSAMP Program - Participant

Research Laboratory - in Dr. Jamil Momand’s Group Off campus:

to work with all Staff and Student Staff. It’s my priority to finish the the Mid-Year Evaluation Review for Staff asap, in order to implement an action plan.

Following with the Annual Evaluation Review. Also, David already bring my direct report would be a very smooth transition because we meet on biweekly bases.

Lastly, I’d like to mention that if I say I am going to do something, I do it. Just like all the goals I set back during strategic planning in summer training, I met all of those goals. All the initiatives I said I was going to do, done. I plan on doing exactly what I said, and if elected I will get job done.

First Name: Mikaila Last Name: Ishaaya

Position: Associate Justice Major: English

Monday: 3:15PM to 4:15PM Tuesday: 12:30PM to 1:30PM Wednesday:

Thursday:

Friday: 12:30PM to 2PM

1. What previous experience have you had in the area in which you are applying for?

My experience on a competitive speech and debate team has prepared me for the position of associate justice. An ability to interpret, edit, and apply codes and policies was specifically mentioned under position duties, skills honed through both the crafting of a speech in the drawing of sources, and in debate forums such as Congress and SPAR (spontaneous argumentation), both of which I participated in. The former requires extensive research on the discussed topic preceding the debate itself for a thorough understanding of the material and a willingness to dedicate time and effort. The latter relies on quick, efficient construction of arguments at the time of the debate (topics are not presented until then), requiring an ability to think on your toes and stay focused. I believe my success in both forms during my speech and debate career speaks of my capacity and interest in applying my skill set to this ASI position.

2. State briefly why are you are applying and/or are interested in this position

A majority of my reasoning behind applying for the position of associate justice stems from an interest in expanding my engagement within the Cal State LA community. As a first year I have yet to develop a full understanding and likely appreciation for the way CSULA is run; however, at this point in time, and at my current comfort level and success in my courses, I believe my skill set can contribute to ASI through the associate justice position. I look forward to the ability to consider current effectiveness and application of policy due to my potential affect on the student body, its personal impact on me as a student, and to an interest in pursuing law.

3. What do you feel are some of the major problems facing the students of CSULA?

Based on observations of close friends or recent classmates, students of CSULA are confronted with increasing, daily stress. This pressure stems not only from heavy homework loads and exams, but from the additional responsibility of juggling course work with a job. Though I do not doubt the availability of counselors at Cal State LA, even the most stressed of students frequently overlook counselors as a viable option to coping with stress, most often due to a claim of having no time. There is therefore a pressing need to provide accessible, time-conscious alternatives.

4. List activities and/or organizations that you have been involved with (on or off campus)

Along with past speech and debate experience, I provide campus tours and have been a dedicated oil painter for the past four years. I additionally assist with billing at Olympia Medical Center.

A.S.I. Cabinet of Commissioner's Application 2017-18

Application Ref ID: 3971 | Submitted: Friday, March 9, 2018 - 1:19pm

First Name: Jay Last Name: Doshi

Position: Environmental Affairs Commissioner Major: Biochemistry

Class: First Year

Monday: 3-6 PM Tuesday: 10-5 PM Wednesday: 3-6 PM Thursday: 11-5 PM Friday: 10-5 PM

- - - -

1. What previous experience have you had in the area in which you are applying for?

In high school, I participated in Model United Nations, where we used to focus on resolving certain issues. In this program, I was able to specialize in environmental issues, so by using my past experience from MUN, I will able to successfully facilitate my assets into ASI. I have also participated in Boy Scouts of America, so I have learned environment solutions for the betterment of our society.

2. State briefly why are you are applying and/or are interested in this position

I am interested in this position because I want to give back to CalState LA and help our students grow just as this school has done for me. By applying for this particular position, I will not only be able to fulfill that goal, but also do so passionately as I hope to pursue an environmentalist, public-service position in my future career.

3. What do you feel are some of the major problems facing the students of CSULA?

Some of the major problems we must address here at CalState LA would mainly be civic engagement and interactions. As the Environmental Affairs commissioner, I will strive to organize accessible programs where students can volunteer or help out in their own community. Since this is a commuter school, students may be busy; however, by the implementation of more publicized organizations and events, I hope this problem of engagement decreases.

4. List activities and/or organizations that you have been involved with (on or off campus)

Some organizations that I have been active with on campus include American Red Cross and the Biochemistry and Chemistry Club. Outside of school, I am active in Toastmasters and Boy Scouts, which have helped my community service experience.
