Gibson County Mentors from the Boys & Girls Club Mal-colmn Warren and Jasmen Galloway, Administrative As-sistant Erika Dean, and Tennessee 4-H members and adult leaders from Bedford, Crockett, Fentress, Henry, Marshall and Roan Counties attended the National Youth Summit on Healthy Living in Washington D.C. held Janu-ary 9-12th. Tennessee 4-H members joined other adults and teens from across the country to gain knowledge and skills in health, nutrition, and fitness. The summit focused on topics which included healthy eating, social-emotional issues, bullying, and distracted driving. Attendees were also given tools on how to successfully educate their communities and get people involved.

The Healthy Living Summit fea-tured workshops with various 4-H leaders, professionals in the healthy living field, authors who have written healthy living curriculum, and activists who are working to educate commu-nities about healthy living top-ics. The last day of the trip was set aside for state teams to work on action plans for how to use the information in their re-spective states. Tennessee’s plan (which they presented to the group, below) is to include healthy living information and activities at the 4-H Roundup this summer at UT Martin.

Of the 22 states represented at the Summit, Tennessee had the largest delegation with 20 members on the team (above). No trip to Washington D.C. would be complete without time to go sightseeing! The group went on a night tour to see the different monuments. The Tennes-see group also made a stop at Georgetown Cupcake, which is featured on TLC’s show, DC Cupcakes (right).

My Experience in Washington D.C.

On my Washington D.C. trip, I had one of

the best times of my life. A topic of the

week that we talked about was healthy

liv-ing. They gave us tips on how to eat

healthy and how to live a healthy life. The

H conference was held at the National

4-H Center. There were huge, amazing

build-ings that housed all sorts of different

peo-ple from different states and different

coun-tries. My week in D.C. was great, and

hope-fully I can attend next year.

“The Boys and Girls Club has made my life better. We do a lot of activities, we take a lot of trips, and they care about our grades. My grades have improved since I started coming to the club. The staff is always there with extra help if I need it because they really care.”

- Destiny Williamson, 8th grade

This month’s Family Values Session featured guest speakers Jonathan Wilson of the Humboldt Police Department, Paul Turner, and former drug addict, Krisha White. Parents were encouraged to “be nosey” in order to prevent drug abuse in their children. White shared her per-sonal history with drugs and her testimony of quitting.

Club members had fun getting ready for the Super Bowl Friday afternoon by par-ticipating in football games and having a party. Members played two-hand touch in the gym (above), won candy in a Candy Walk (right), played Football Trivia

(bottom right), competed in an online Football Scavenger Hunt (bottom middle), and played Football Bingo (bottom left).
