For those wanting to gain the

instrumental and professional

skills to work as a freelance

musician.

The Music Business degree is

delivered from a dedicated space in

the Custard Factory in Birmingham’s

creative quarter. The Custard Factory

is home to many innovative creative

businesses and students benefit

from working in this professional

environment.

The Popular Music Performance

degree is delivered from The

Mushrooms studios and Access to

Music’s own centre in Birmingham’s

creative quarter. The Mushrooms offers

fully-equipped rehearsal rooms and a

digital studio and allows students to

study in a professional workplace.

All students can take advantage of

the excellent facilities at BCU’s new

city centre campus which is located a

short walk from The Mushrooms and

the Custard Factory. There are library

facilities as well as a student union

shop and bar.

Students engage in real-world music

opportunities in Birmingham and

further afield. Music Business students

organise gigs and showcases and

performance students play public

events at professional venues.

This programme provides students with the skills required for a management career in the music industry. You will work on assignments which provide hands-on experience of music industry enterprise, from event promotion and management, through to setting up a record label. You will also develop an understanding of how new technologies are changing the creative industries, and you will be encouraged to use latest technologies in your own ventures. In these projects you will be guided and

mentored by working professionals.

The degree comprises 360 credits over an accelerated two-year period. It is designed to equip you with the skills required to operate across a range of sectors within the music industry. You will be required to analyse the development of your skills and how to exploit these to maximise the effectiveness of your projects. You will also expand your ability to contextualise, to think critically and to apply theories, to allow you to develop as an individual.

After graduating from Birmingham Conservatoire, Jordan, who has over ten years experience in the classical music world, decided to tackle some of the promotional challenges faced by musicians.

This decision led him to the Music

Business degree. With skills gained

from the course and the support of his tutors, Jordan started a business, called Profusical, which allows musicians to create an online portfolio of their artistic material. Profusical has been set up as an innovative way for musicians to promote their music and raise awareness of the talent to make the best impact they can.

This degree, offered in partnership with Birmingham City University, provides vocational training for musicians (guitarists, bassists, drummers, keyboard players and vocalists) who intend to work in the music industry as freelance popular musicians. It is designed to cater for musicians from a wide range of musical backgrounds and experiences and provide the skills required to progress into employment, self-employment and/or higher-level study. Niall Creane is a guitarist and songwriter with more than 8 years experience. He currently performs with Birmingham based rock band, Zero Wasters, and regularly collaborates with other artists in the Birmingham area. Seeking an opportunity to further his skills and meet new industry professionals, Niall enrolled on the

Popular Music Performance degree.

Through connections he made on the course, Niall took an internship with a company operating a new music platform. This has provided him with first hand experience of a different area of the music industry.
