We offer a range of science and maths courses that will equip you with the skills and knowledge to pursue a variety of career paths in the physical and chemical engineering sectors as well as the biochemical, life and food science industries.

You can choose to study at a range of different levels, whether that’s taking your first steps with an introductory course, gaining a broad range of employer-relevant skills on our NC programmes or aiming straight for university with our Access courses, you will find the ideal programme for you.

Our Science department offers you the opportunity to study in purpose-built laboratory facilities to support the development of your general and specialist practical skills. We also offer a range of opportunities to enhance your studies, such as encouraging you to become involved as a volunteer in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Maths) Ambassador Programme - a UK-wide scheme to encourage young people to study STEM subjects.

SCIENCE

I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Edinburgh College. The main reason I decided to study Applied Science was so that I could further my career in the dental industry. I always had a passion for science at school, so when I decided to return to education after around ten years it was an easy decision for me to

make. I am now a student at Glasgow Caledonian University studying BSc Oral Health Science. I definitely gained valuable skills and knowledge while at college, which I have been able to build upon at university. I really enjoyed the practical side of the course, conducting experiments and writing reflective lab

reports. I was delighted to receive news that I had been put forward for this award and hope that it continues to encourage current and future students.

MARTIN DIAMOND //

NEBOSH AWARD

Martin Diamond, an Edinburgh College student beat off more than 1,300 others to be named one of the country’s top occupational health and safety students. Martin received the Phil Hughes Award from (NEBOSH) the National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health. The award is

presented annually to the best candidate in Unit A of the diploma.

The NEBOSH National Diploma qualification is recognised globally by professional bodies such as the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health for Professional membership.

Martin, who is 35 years old and studied the part-time qualification while working as an environmental health officer, said: “I didn’t expect to win the best candidate award so it was a big surprise. I felt very proud of my achievements, to have obtained the top mark from more than 1,300 candidates”.

Martin added: “The most interesting part of the course was finding out about major catastrophes such as Piper Alpha and Chernobyl. We learned why accidents like these occur and how to prevent them happening again in the future.”

With this extra qualification under his belt as well as the NEBOSH Best Candidate Award, Martin plans to take his newly acquired skills and knowledge back to West Lothian Council, where he assists local businesses with occupational health and safety as an environmental health officer.

I enjoyed the teaching style at the

college, with a mixture of lectures,

quizzes, class competitions and

practical demonstrations, making the

course a lot more interesting.
