PRACTICAL LEGAL

TRAINING

2015 HANDBOOK

Your legal career starts here...

New Elective Choices

(2)

T

he first essential step to becoming a lawyer in Australia is to complete a law degree. A law degree provides you with the theoretical framework that underpins your understanding of law and legal practice in Australia. The second essential step to being admitted is completion of a Practical Legal Training program (PLT)*, which is usually undertaken at the completion of your law degree. PLT is a structured training program designed to develop your practical skills and proficiency in the actual day-to-day practice of law, which you will need when starting work as an entry level lawyer. On completion of a PLT program you are awarded a Graduate Diploma of Legal Practice (GDLP). The award of the GDLP makes you eligible to apply for admission as a legal practitioner in your state or territory.

All three components must be completed before you are eligible to receive your Graduate Diploma of Legal Practice and seek admission as an Australian lawyer. From the commencement of your PLT program with The College you usually have up to four (4) years to complete all three components.

he College offers two options for students to complete the Work Experience component. Both are bundled into enrolment packages to suit your individual circumstances. Before working out which option is best for you check The College’s Work Experience Rules at collaw.edu.au/workexperience as they differ in each jurisdiction.

This option suits students who may already have some work experience. In this option you will need to complete 25 days of work experience and the CEM which is comprised of:

• Four written reflections about your work experience • An advanced skills session

Details about the CEM

• The PLT + CEM option runs for 20 weeks full-time or concurrently in the 30 week part-time mode • There is an additional cost for the CEM which can be placed on FEE-HELP; see p9 for details of fees

• If you enrol in the PLT + CEM option and subsequently accrue enough days for the 75 day work experience option, you can move into the PLT + 75 day work experience option.

What else do I need to know?

• You will need to have completed your 25 days of work experience prior to starting the PLT + CEM option

• Work experience undertaken within the 12 months prior to commencing your PLT coursework may be counted.

This option suits students who already have accrued or plan to accrue a significant proportion of the work experience days needed for this component. In this option you will need to complete 75 days of approved work experience.

What else do I need to know?

• Work experience can be undertaken before or after your PLT coursework, or during your coursework if enrolled in a part-time course • Students can count up to 55 days in NSW, VIC and SA or 40 days in QLD and WA while still completing their law degree. The remaining days can be accrued immediately following the final assessment or exam towards your law degree • If you enrol in the PLT + 75 day work experience option you can subsequently move into the PLT + CEM option provided you have already accrued 25 days of work experience.

The first stop on your search for work experience has to be The College of Law jobs noticeboard! With an average of 70 jobs from around the country at any one time, we have more opportunities available for law students than any other website in Australia. In addition to the extensive network and profile that The College has within the legal industry that ensures access to the latest placements, we actively source opportunities for our jobs noticeboard. We have a staff member dedicated to actively working with the profession to find placement opportunities for our students. The College also advertises in legal publications encouraging employers to post their jobs on our noticeboard. The College maintains a register of CVs for enrolled College students looking for work. We send these CVs out to employers who request them. Simply email your CV to [email protected] to be placed on the employment register. To see all the opportunities available on the College noticeboard visit collaw.edu.au/careers There are a number of other useful websites to search for jobs: • RRR Law (rural, regional and remote) – rrrlaw.com.au • Survive Law – survivelaw.com • Beyond Law – beyondlaw.com.au • Social Justice Opportunities – sjopps.net.au • Pro Bono Australia – probonoaustralia.com.au • Justice Connect (formerly PILCH) – justiceconnect.org.au • National Association of Community Legal Centres – naclc.org.au It’s worth doing your own research to find additional websites and resources to assist with placement opportunities.

WORK EXPERIENCE?

WHERE TO FIND

(9)

There are a wide range of opportunities that may count towards the Work Experience component of PLT. Eligible work experience must be under the supervision of a practising lawyer and may include: • Summer clerkships • Paralegal work • Volunteering at community legal centres • A placement with Legal Aid • Working with the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions • Companies with legal departments • Tax or legal division of chartered accountants • Policy and planning work with the government • Judge’s associate or tipstaff • Assisting barristers in chambers • Working in government or semi-government departments • Assisting Tribunal members. You can count up to 55 days in NSW, VIC and SA or 40 days in QLD and WA while still completing your law degree. The remaining days can be accrued immediately following the final assessment or exam towards your law degree. The rules differ from state to state, so please refer to The College’s Work Experience Rules on the website at collaw.edu.au/workexperience If you are currently working in a legal placement The College allows you to have it pre-approved prior to starting PLT. Students simply complete The College’s Work Experience Approval form which is available on p22 of this Handbook or on the downloads section of our website. This includes having your supervisor sign off on the work experience you’ve completed. We encourage students to complete and submit the Work Experience Completion form to The College as soon as your placement has come to an end so that you don’t have any issues later if your supervisor leaves the firm or organisation. At the end of a placement, students need to complete the Work Experience Declaration which can found at collaw.edu.au/downloads
