Client Profile

iCharts is a cloud-based charting tool that makes it easy to visualize, share and distribute data. It accelerates data-driven storytelling with interactive charts for publishers, marketers, journalists, bloggers, and market researchers. The iCharts community today is over 14,000 strong, including users such as Coca Cola, IDC, Marketwatch, Focus Online and NRF. More information about the team at www.icharts.net

The iCharts tool enables processing, visualization and distribution of big and small data. Their vision is to empower the world to explore and share data by enabling the free flow of visual data among data owners, media, business and consumers. Users can upload and connect to Excel sheets, csv files, dynamic data, Google spread sheets, survey data in the form of SPSS or iCharts proprietary data, OLAP data sources, process the data, and use it to create attractive, interactive charts and dashboards using a web application.

Business

The company was founded in 2008, with their SAAS application on dedicated infrastructure hosted with a hosting provider. It went on to be become a popular data visualization provider with bloggers, teachers, government analysts and small business owners, along with Fortune 500 companies and other market research partners who started harnessing the power tool. The business need was to grow further, in

terms of storage, bandwidth and processing capacity called for ad hoc needs for scaling the infrastructure, which was limited by SLAs provided by the infrastructure vendor.

Solution Approach

Compassites proposed and implemented migration of the whole application stack to the public cloud to ensure elastic, auto scaling, fault tolerant and high capacity infrastructure, using the following services provided by Amazon Web Services.

Benefits / Results

 Elastic infrastructure provided by elastic load balancer and auto scaling.

 High availability and fault tolerance provided by installing the elastic load balancer against two availability zones.  Higher processing capacity through Amazon RDS.  Reduction of infrastructure costs by half.

"The most interesting and unique approach of Compassites is to create a real relationship with it's customers. This means that it is a partnership which can go far beyond the level which is normal in business life."

Enabling mobile users with location based services

A brand owned by Y2CF Digital Media Private Ltd., Hoppr is a mobile device agnostic location based service. It has partnered with Bharti Softbank, in order to actively participate in the growth of the mobile ecosystem in India. The firm ties up with most of the leading mobile service providers in India to give a seamless experience for location specific data and content. Hoppr leverages location data and merchant offering to provide custom deals to people searching for information around their locations; all that needs to be done is to go for location based ‘check-ins’.

Ruby on Rails (ROR), MongoDB The Hoppr value proposition really caught on and increased

in popularity resulting in about 200 merchant registrations to be made per week. The merchant registrations were carried out by the Hoppr Sales team. The complete signing up process, along with verification, would require ample amount of time (approximately 10-15 days). The processing time for the Point-Of- Sales Collateral publishing was around 4 weeks as it needed involvement of Hoppr for approval and posting it for customers. The entire process was controlled by the firm where the merchants could only place their requests to be considered by Hoppr team and wait for upgrading their offers.

The merchant registration could now happen within lesser time, aiming at a complete processing time of up to 48 hours in the future.

An efficient as well as leaner system reduced the processing time effectively.

Automation ensured less of manual errors and slack times.

Helped the merchants with “self help” features to satisfactorily tailor their offers for their target customers.

The solution that was created was aimed at creating a fully automated system where the merchants are given the scope to place their offers and collaterals themselves. It created a platform called called “Merchants’ Self Service” which provides the merchants with a self sign-up feature.

This allowed the merchants to be able to put up their offers themselves.

Client Profile

The client is division of the world's largest beverage company. Globally, through the world's largest beverage distribution system, consumers in more than 200 countries enjoy their sparkling beverages, ready-to-drink coffees, juices, juice drinks and beverages at the rate of 1.8 billion servings a day!

Business Situation

The client sources the market research data from one of the largest market research companies, which provides around 34 trillion data points of relevant market research data, which was made available to client using their proprietary tool. The market research department of client would then work through this data for about two months to manually create a 220 tabbed excel report. Most of the report generation process was manual; giving scope to human errors. Creating reports was extremely time consuming and an expensive process.

This was a very inefficient approach since there was loss of valuable time until the report was published. Most of the process was manual; giving scope to human errors. The reports were shared through emails, physical documents creating lack of flexibility and easy availability. Creating new reports was extremely time consuming and an expensive process. The client has to source some of the data from one of the largest market research companies, which usually turned out to be expensive.

Big Data : Market Research

Solution Approach

We got the data from the market research company in the form of raw database files, and processed this data, to generate a macro level database in the form of OLAP cubes, to be served to end users through a web based, advanced data visualization platform called iCharts. Since this was a huge data set that needs to be processed and analyzed, the data was processed in parallel through a MapReduce implementation.

Benefits / Results

 Fully automatic process preventing any human errors. Quick turnaround of reports and the monthly data is now available to managers within 3 days.

 Highly organized dashboard, with advanced data visualization capabilities like filtering.

 Access controlled dashboard to give selective access to different users.

 Individual reports can be downloaded, to be shared with management.

 Availability of filtered raw data allows for creating new reports in short time, with fractional cost.

 Intermediate database allows for merging data from other sources to create an integrated report.

 Built on open source technology stack, thereby saving tremendous cost on software licenses.

Client Profile

Awarded the best "Customer Loyalty Program" award by Asia Retail Congress, imint is known as the common element between brands, retailers and local merchants that could deliver a superior shopping experience.

Some brands were running their own loyalty programs but consumers were disillusioned with these programs as they did not see value in them. It took too long to collect points and mostly, the points could be redeemed for items that had a poor perceived value. Also, there were too many cards in the consumer's wallet. That's when the idea of i-mint was conceived whereby a single card could be used across a network of brands and local merchants to accumulate points. A consumer would have to carry only one card and all the points that he earned across different categories of spends would get aggregated on one card. Hence, a consumer can earn large number of points quickly and redeem them for better rewards.

Business Situation

The previous design of the portal had availability issues. The downtime was severe and significantly high crippling the operations. The user interface and user experience had failed to live to the expectation of the stakeholders and customers. The customers were not able to redeem points due to the outage resulting in unacceptable portal behavior and bad user experience. When the business grew in size with more vendors being pooled to offer their products. The portal failed to scale and cost the company.

It was a typical Java/J2EE portal built with MySQL as backend and hosted on Apache. While the setup was in place, the system had many issues with regard to handling and development of code. When there were concurrent users, the load test failed and the

thereafter. Hence, from a technical and business standpoint, it was decided to scrap the entire project and start ground-up.

Solution Approach

The client approached Compassites initially to create a user interactivity module. Eventually they enlarged the scope to the development to the entire portal's development. Compassites went on to create the portal ground-up by restructuring the portal using Java\J2EE. We built a reliable front-end by bringing onboard the most user-friendly features and handled the performance issue with a judicious mix of business acumen and technology edge. The various features there were built later into the portal greatly enriched the user experience.

With the change in layout, logo and multi-features, more vendors came forward to exhibit their products and customers were more than willing to redeem their points as the uptime was to a close 99.9%. It was a phenomenal achievement in a timespan of just 5 months, by which the system was rigorously tested, soft launched and then taken live for production.

Benefits / Results

 The redemption increased by 70% and the number of online customers and vendors increased.

 The user experience went up, so did the comfort factor.  There was no outage faced ever since and downtime became

a rarity.

 The portal became very consistent and reliable in terms of behavior.

 We enabled the client to articulate their business models effectively.

“The client handling has been exceptional, always responding to the need of the hour. The team has always delivered when the project schedule had real tough deadlines to deliver, by taking into account the methodology of Agile.”

A big data challenge

Informatics is the leading and oldest information vendor for journals, reference books, e-books and technology products to the academic and corporate research communities in India, including engineering, medical, management and agriculture colleges, Government funded research institutes, and R&D based corporate.

Informatics was founded three decades ago with the intention to pioneer the business of e -information. With the vision of proving itself to be an ever-shining star in the domain of global information and publishing industry, they laid their main focus on scholarly and research articles, the intention was to help scholars benefit from publishing media and help libraries to filter information relevant to the search item and help suffice the needs of the users.

Amazon EC2, Solr

This system was launched in 1984 in India by sharing global databases with Indian universities through Telex and gradually moved to having a large pool of users as well as databases to manage, Informatics started facing the problem of keeping up scaling up. The key problems faced by the client included non-scalable system that was not yet ready for a global audience. The existing system had a downtime of 4-6 hours per day to update the system. Also the system lacked proper access to subscriptions date wise and lacked a finer way of defining access.

The solutions provided by Compassites had its evident results as the number of libraries, which was earlier restricted to 1700, now was expandable up to 5000 libraries. Other than this, 32 million records held earlier were now scalable to 100 million records, which could be easily retrieved using multiple entry points. Apart from the existing access definition of journals, now the author name as well as journal time frame could be used to retrieve relevant information, which functioned around the clock without any downtime for updating the system.

Compassites executed a technology solution to help Informatics deal with standing issues. Amazon cloud services was used to improve the processing power and

storage, and make the infrastructure scalable. Faceting the search instead of relying on the simple search which provided multiple entry points for the users to retrieve information from the database. Standpoint of search index platform was given importance to in order to make the system scalable as it used sharding to break big chunks of data into smaller manageable indexes, which could be easily retrievable as well.

Great bunch of guys to work with. What could not have been achieved by other vendors for years, Compassites could crack it in less than 4 months. We plan to work with Compassites for futher enchancement of our product.

Client Profile

Authentix is the global leader in authentication and tracking solutions for excise tax recovery and brand protection. As the inventor and developer of many of the leading nano-scale authentication solutions in use today, Authentix is renowned in the realm of verification and validation using a world-class technology portfolio.

Business Situation

Tobacco tax evasion is a problem that costs federal and state governments billions per year. This creates challenges in securing the manufacturing, distribution, and application of the tax stamps. Tracking of cigarette packs throughout their distribution would enable tax authorities to ensure proper tax collection, but currently taxes on cigarettes are collected via a stamp system that has very limited track and trace capabilities. In order to manage tobacco tax revenue collection efficiently and securely, it is necessary to significantly improve tax stamp security features and transition stamp distribution from a centralized print and distribute model to a secure print-on-demand model.

Solution Approach

Authentix partnered with Compassites in creating the Digital Solution along with RED Stamp, Inc. and Assure Digitax to offer the next generation solution for tobacco tax revenue management and recovery. This unique system enables tax collection authorities to collect tax revenues effectively and track the status of legally issued stamps electronically. This

Mobility - iOS and Android

Destinu is a start-up company based out of Bogota, Colombia. They wanted to build & launch a product which will enable consumers to request private taxis/cabs on-demand. The product was initially launched in the Colombia market with potential to expand in other countries and geographies quickly.

Destinu had a very well designed concept for cab seekers to access taxis at their beck and call. The challenge was to deploy the concept into a real time application. They wanted a mobile application, which would run on all versions of the iPhone and Android platforms. To handle the back end operations they want a website to be built.

The customers were able to get taxis at their disposal with minimal effort.

The cab booking process was simplified to just a few clicks.

The system provides a cashless transaction benefit to customers.

Customers can rate the drivers and drivers can rate the customers.

The system enables customers to set their favorite pick up locations.

The application also provides the facility for drivers to accept the number of requests made from customers for pick up.

Real time maps are displayed to set the location. From the customer's perspective, he would request for a car

by dragging the blip to a particular location. This enables him to set the pickup location on the map. The Destinu server in return allows the user to view all taxis in the vicinity of 2 kms in the form of blips. The customer can now select the nearest taxi available by the click of a button. A visual aid has also been provided to the customer who can see the car moving towards the pickup location on map. Meanwhile a pin is sent to customer and driver. Now the customer can just hop into the car and get out at his destination, with no need of fumbling for money because Destinu automatically charges his credit card once he has viewed the amount, which needs to be paid to the bearer.

From the driver's perspective, he receives a list of requests, which is sent from the Destinu server. The driver has the option to accept a request. Accepting this request will make

the request inactive for all the other drivers who have received the request. The driver is provided with an option to call the customer or text the customer. The bill is calculated and sent online to the customer's device for accepting it. The solution also has some additional features. The customer can rate the driver and vice versa. This is possible at the end of the trip or even if the trip is cancelled. The customer can also view the profile of the driver and vice versa. Compassites developed a minimum viable version of the website which handled the back end operations. We also developed the native application for iPhone and Android platforms. Thus the smart phones helped to connect the cab seeker and driver. The product also had a customer app and driver app, which could be downloaded easily.
