ithin a few hours and over a 75-odd km stretch, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s shifting of gears was unmistakable on Saturday.

In Patna, at the official function to launch several developmental projects, Modi as the Prime Minister show-cased an unusual bonhomie

publicly with his bête noire Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and even lavished praise on him. Cut to Muzaffarpur, at the Parivartan Rally where he kicked off BJP’s poll campaign, he lost no time in changing tack to don the mantle of his party’s chief campaigner and launch a direct frontal attack, his fiercest yet, on Nitish.

Modi said it was Nitish’s “political DNA” that led him to

ditch his friends like his former Janata Dal colleague George Fernandes, the BJP with whom he severed ties due to his “prac-tice of political untouchability”; BJP leader and former Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Modi and former Chief Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi. “The DNA of democracy is not like that. In democracy, you give respect even to your polit-ical rivals,” Modi said.

He accused Nitish of back-stabbing the people of Bihar at the expense of the development of the State, for which, he announced, he will, post-Parliament Session, dole out a

special package bigger than the C50,000 crore

ndia’s Test discard S Sreesanth and two other cricketers — Ajit Chandila and Ankeet Chavan — were on Saturday discharged in the sensational 2013 IPL-6 spot-fixing case by a court here which held that police have failed to make out a case against them.

“All are discharged,” Additional Sessions Judge Neena Bansal Krishna said while pronouncing the order clearing in all, 36 people accused of cheating, cheating by personation and conspira-cy along with charges under the tough Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA).

The three cricketers, who were banned for life from the game by the BCCI immediate-ly after police action in the alleged scam two years ago, were clubbed with underworld fugitive dons Dawood Ibrahim and Chhota Shakeel. They were accused of involvement in organised crime syndicate run by the dons.

But the court, which was to decide whether to frame charges in the case, however, said the police was also unable to sub-stantiate charges under MCOCA and also under the Indian Penal Code. Six accused including Ibrahim and Shakeel were declared proclaimed offenders. It was of the view that there

was no evidence in the case to frame charges in which the Delhi Police had first filed a

irth anniversaries are the intangible pearls that string together life, death and the infi-nite space of time thereafter. And July 26 marks one such continuum — the birth of the legendary Jim Corbett, 140 years ago in the hills of Uttarakhand.

Immortalised the world over as much for his heroic exploits of hunting man-eating tigers as for his love of nature, it was in the quaint locales of Nainital that the British con-servationist took birth and spent the most important years of his life. Of how close these mountains of Uttarakhand were to Corbett’s heart was laid bare by the words engraved on his gravestone in Nyeri, Kenya-“Jim Corbett, from Nainital”.

It was in 1862 that Corbett’s parents made Nainital their home when Jim’s father, William Christopher Corbett, became the city’s postmaster. Thirteen years later, Jim was born to a large family of sib-lings and he manifested his love for the picturesque natural set-tings of his birthplace from an

early age. Instinctively and by observation, Corbett came to identify animals and birds by their calls as he developed a knack for tracking and hunting. Though an avid nature lover and conservationist, Corbett tracked and shot a total

of 33 man-eaters between 1907 and 1938, though only about a dozen were actually well- doc-umented. It is claimed that these big cats had killed more than 1,200 men, women and children. The first tiger he killed, the Champawat Tiger in

Champawat, was responsible for 436 documented deaths.

Though most of his kills were tigers, Corbett successful-ly killed at least two man-eating leopards. The first was the Panar Leopard in 1910, which alleged-ly killed 400 people. The second

was the man-eating Leopard of Rudraprayag in 1926, which terrorised the pilgrims to the Hindu shrines of Kedarnath and Badrinath for more than eight years, claiming responsi-bility for more than 126 deaths. Other notable man-eaters he killed were the Talla-Des eater, the Mohan man-eater, the Thak man-man-eater, the Muktesar man-eater and the Chowgarh tigress.

When Jim was little, each winter, the family shifted to their beautiful colonial cottage called ‘Arundel’ at a verdant place that is popularly known as ‘Corbett’s Village’ and officially named, ‘Kaladhungi’. Lying in Himalayan foothills, this place is bestowed with spectacular scenic beauty and the surrounding woods and its wildlife intrigued Jim, and as a rather small child, he would set out to the forests, soaking in the habitat.

Sadly, when he was only four-years-old, he lost his father, and his elder brother took over as the postmaster of the area. Following this, in 1881, Jim’s mother, Mary Jane along with her many children shifted from their abode

nun was on Saturday denied permission to write the All-India Pre-Medical Entrance Test (AIPMT) in Thiruvananthapuram after she refused to remove her veil and Holy Cross as required under the CBSE’s new dress code.

The nun, Sister Seba, who was to appear for the examination at the Jawahar Central School at Kanjiramkulam, one of the 30 examination centres in Thiruvananthapuram, said she had sought permission to write the exam with her veil and Holy Cross on, but the school principal denied her permis-sion quoting the new dress code of the CBSE.

“I reached there well before the start of the test. I thought they would let me write the exam with the veil and Cross on after frisking,” the nun said.

mid the ongoing logjam in Parliament with the Opposition demanding her res-ignation, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj on Saturday took to Twitter to defend herself saying she neither rec-ommended travel documents for Lalit Modi nor spoke to British MP Keith Vaz to allow the former IPL chief to travel outside England.

Swaraj, in a series of tweets, tried to explain her position against allegations of helping the for-mer IPL chief. “I am saying this time and again, that I never requested or recom-mended travel documents for Lalit Modi,” Swaraj tweeted. She added that it was “absolutely false” that she spoke to Keith Vaz, the British Labour MP, and urged the British Government to let Modi travel.

Responding to her tweets people fol-lowing her on Twitter urged her to tell her side of the story. To which she said: “As a Minister I am accountable to Parliament.

otwithstanding the ver-dict of a Delhi court dropping charges against for-mer India pacer S Sreesanth and two others in the 2013 spot-fixing scandal, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has decided to stick to its ban on the three cricketers for the time being.

All the 36 accused includ-ing Sreesanth, Ankeet Chavan and Ajit Chandila were on Saturday discharged in the IPL-6 spot fixing case by Patiala House Court but BCCI said its disciplinary decision remained unaltered.

“Any disciplinary proceed-ing or decision taken by the BCCI is independent to any criminal proceeding and has no bearing. The decisions of the BCCI, based on its independent disciplinary action, shall remain unaltered,” BCCI said in a statement issued on Saturday.

ollowing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s blistering attack, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and RJD supre-mo Lalu Prasad both retali-ated strongly saying it does not behove a Prime Minister to use the kind of language he used at his Muzaffarpur rally. Both said that ‘Bharatiya Jumla Party’ and ‘Bharat Jalao Party’ will not succeed in its designs in Bihar polls.

“He stooped so low that he questioned my DNA. Earlier, Nitin Gadkari had blamed that casteism was in the DNA of Bihar and now Modi poked fun at my DNA. Bihar is in my DNA and the PM has insult-ed entire Bihar. The Bihari DNA is that ek Bihari sab par

bhari and they will prove it in

the election,” said Nitish, who held a Press conference on Saturday to counter point by point all charges that the PM levelled against him and the issues he raised. QWhat’s Gayatri’s story in Ek

Thha Raja Ek Thhi Rani?

As Geet and Madhubala I portrayed an aspirational woman struggling for that perfect life partner. Those were stories of hope, desire, love, betrayal, crime and relationship values. Gayatri, however, is the tale of a girl from a middle class family who believes in fairytale romance. How she finds her prince charming and how her life changes after marriage is what the show is all about.

QWas it a conscious decision to do a period romance?

Yes, it was on my bucket list. When I heard the script of Ek

Thha Raja, Ek Thhi Rani, I

immediately said yes. It’s a different and challenging project. After Madhubala, I was waiting for a big show. I turned down several offers because I wanted to do something wor thwhile.

ETRETR is the perfect show that

has come my way. The content is strong and the producers sound. I could not have asked for

anything better.

QWere you in a hurry to make a comeback post marriage?

No. I wanted to settle down and take care of my personal life.

Madhubala ended at the right

time. I left when I was at the peak

of my career. One thing I was sure of— I wanted to come back with a big show.

QHow is married life treating you?

Great. The popular perception is that once an actress gets

married, her career ends. But many actors are now doing fabulous work after marriage. Balancing work and family is an art. I’m blessed to have a husband and in-laws who are supportive and encouraging. Life has not changed much. People are asking me about my weight gain but I’m comfortable with it.

QWhat kind of research did you do for this show?

More than me, it was the creative team and the production house that did that. It took years of research to bring that era (1940s) to life. The clothes, hairstyle, dialogues, lifestyle and other aspects had to be authentic. I initially struggled with the dialogues as they are in chaste Hindi. Pronouncing words like

pustak-kalam had to be worked

on. It is because of the hard work of our research team that I am so well-prepared.

QDo you think this show will garner viewership?

There is no show on TV right now that is set in the 1940s. It’s a

love story which will unveil many secrets. That will, I hope, keep the viewers glued.

QTell us about your look?

It is the best get-up I have donned. It had been a pretty smooth transition for me from playing a Punjabi kudi in Geet and then a Mumbaikar in Madhubala. In Ek Thha Raja, I love the feel of cotton sarees with printed blouses and all those retro hairdos. The make-up is a little different too. I wear a thick eyeliner. When the get-up was describe to me, I wondered how I would look. I loved the end result and hope the viewers love it too.

QAfter the success of Geet and Madhubala, what expectations do you have from this show?

More than me, my viewers have expectations. I have put in a lot of hard work and will accept whatever the popular verdict will be. I hope that people accept the

jodi of Gayatri and R ana

Indravadhan Singh Deo (played by Siddhant Karnick) as they have accepted me in all my other shows.

his is not the Sherlock Holmes you may have grown up with. He is not young, far from cocky or even self-assured though some of his dry humour does manage to save itself from all the wrinkling of a 93-year-old Mr Holmes.

Battling the rigours of age and distinct memory losses (he keeps writing the names of people around him on his shirt sleeve lest he forgets), this very old Mr Holmes delves into something Sherlock Holmes never has — his own emotional state. This brings him to lend his thoughts to his last case of a woman who kills herself which happened 30 years ago but has haunted him ever since. The reason? His emotions for once soared over his logic.

The age and the overwhelming wrinkles of this 93-year-old hero

played to perfection by Ian McClean, however, do not come in the way of him, shaping the case of this film alongside retirement memories, bee-keeping, relationship building and attempting to do everything he can to save his memory, which means he even goes to Japan to get the prickly ash which is meant to restore memory gaps.

The director and the writer have done well to keep the movie powerful despite the lack of a real case or the fervency of youthful investigations. The film, going into frequent flashbacks, grows on you despite the frailties of your evergreen Arthur Conan Doyle hero. Here, he is more cynical than usual, does not wear the hat he is known to and prefers to smoke a cigar which he never has in any previous film. And Mr Watson is never seen even once though the director does well to keep his presence rather constant in the film.

It is a slow moving, emotional Mr Holmes you have. But age and wrinkles keep you aptly buried in the proceedings nevertheless.

his is no fun movie about the Banaras which we have seen in Bollywood through ages but with tinted glasses of either foreign tourism or as a heavy on the heart town of death and pyres.

Having said that, this one too is about death (Masaan means death) and

kriya-karam ghats but it is thrown at

you with a strange cushion of life happening just as it does alongside the end of a journey.

It is the wanton realism of the films that takes it over and above all the other filmmakers who have centred around Kashi to tell you their stories, be it of romance or otherwise.

But Masaan packs a punch by showing you Kashi and the

Kashiwallahs exactly as they are and as they live their life. Nothing is dressed up or underdone. Everything is apt and to the point.

This, however, does not make

Masaan a cut and dry kind of

docu-drama around Varanasi. With Richa Chadha as the Kashi girl in a mess as its central character and also its main story, the debutante director has shown his refreshing cinematic prowess by keeping you entwined in the life and times of a bevy of small town men, women and all their negativities. There is no escape from these negativities in the entire film but still there are these oases of relief that come in the form of a budding romance between a Dom’s son and an upper caste college girl. There is humour, there is everyday life, there is pathos and there is corruption, police blackmail and there is life happening all the time at the door of death.

Indeed, it is an engaging and true slice of life that many of us life but may

his is no Avengers though there is a run-in between the Ant-man and one of the Avengers to keep you interested in the strain of thought and, of course, the Marvel comics chain.

You would have preferred to go into this film with a lot more action than it lets out but the overwhelming feeling you walk away with long after the film ends is the fact that the director and the special effects team do manage to deliver a punch with this miniature man’s big action saga.

Michael Douglas as the harbinger of the ant-man technology and the owner of a mighty tech empire (now ousted from it by his daughter) gives the film a tight togetherness and holds it well despite there being no familiar big heroes from the Marvel clan.

This Marvel character is the size of an inch but deadly than deadlier. It can be used for warfare, to penetrate into molecular holes and be used for all kinds of surveillance activities.

With such tech prowess, it is only natural that the technology has to be hijacked with unscrupulous elements which in this case is Cross, Douglas’ long estranged protege and now the head of Pye Technologies.

He is bald, menacing, unscrupulous and a cold blooded murderer who wants to make it big with the Ant-man technology which, incidentally, has been hidden away by Douglas for decades fearing misuse.

The action in the film makes you want more but the story still makes its mark with all the familial

emotionalism, father-daughter woes, dangerous futurisms and of course the one-inch ant-man who saves the world alongside a colony of real-time ants and their architectural, bullet, fire and carpentry tenets. 2:D2J69;2922? hy would writer-director Biswajeet Bora not release this film when the entire world was celebrating World Environment Day on June 5? This, despite the fact that there is a dialogue which says that environment day is to be celebrated on June 5! To release this film as a documentary would have been a better option.

It is good to know that there are people who want to celebrate Nature and make films on the subject, nowhere does it say that one has to take actors who have nothing to offer in terms of performance.

Ira Dubey with her bad Assamese accent really gets on one’s nerves. Palash Sen just ambles along. He should stick to singing. Yashpal Sharma does manage to do justice to his character even though his role is limited. It is the younger lot — Kymsleen Kholie, who plays Pakhi who manages to endear herself.

Besides the acting, it is the manner the whole project has been executed that makes this one a rather tedious watch.

The misplaced item number does nothing to elevate the movie even though there are some great shots of Assam. Those who feel that there are not enough movies on the North-eastern States, this will make for an interesting watch.

The other saving grace of the movie is that it has a great concept.

rom stylish carpets to Belgian chandeliers, ball dance floors, chiffon sarees shipped from England, designer jewellery, vintage cars, antique furniture, old cameras, horse carts, costumes, royal mannerisms and clay utensils, cotton sarees, old cycles, and much more. The pre-independence era of 1940s is all set to come alive in Zee’s newest period romance Ek Thha Raja

Ek Thhi Rani.

“The 1940s were a time of change, politics and intrigues. In the history of India, the pre-Independence decade was the most happening. Amid all this churning, there is a love story that unfolds taking mysterious turns. How a small town girl’s (Gayatri), big dreams of marrying a prince and living a princess’ life, comes true.

But Indrawadan Singh Deo the no-nonsense, brooding prince of the royal family of Amerkot, marries Gayatri in mysterious circumstances. Then there is a secret room in the palace where a woman is kept captive for years,” Sunjoy Wadhwa, the co-producer, Sphere Origins tells you adding that the show will go on air from July 27 at 9:30 pm.

The casting of the show has been done on a grand scale and the makers tell you that the chemistry between Drashti Dhami and Siddhant Karnik will work like magic. From roping in seasoned actors like Anita Raj, Surekha Sikri and Darshan Zariwala to popular stars like Moon Bannerjee and Akshay Anand, the showmakers are leaving no stone unturned to make it different and appealing to the audience.

“The characterisation is very different and how they all come

together and bond with each other in this period romance will be exciting to watch out for. I took training in horse riding, action stunts, body language and diction. It was challenging to get into the character as I prefer to be spontaneous when it comes to playing a character,” Karnik says.

In order to re-create of the pre-Independence era, it took more than a year for this show to reach the audience. “The story is penned by Nilanjana Purkayastha who is also the creative producer. Research and production work took us a-year-and-a-half. We referred to many books and old pictures and videos. I spoke to many people on how the royalty used to behave. We also took our time to decide on the location which we found in Bikanair and Baroda. We roped in Chandravadan More, National Award winning art director to replicate the Baroda Palace which is the only waterproof set made for a TV show. It took 300 workers to create the replica of the palace in Naigaon,” Wadhwa says.

Pradeep Hejmadi, Zee TV business head tells you that the show is the most expensive and interesting TV show ever made so far on Indian TV. “ETRETR is a beautiful love story. We have seen many mythological shows but the pre-Independence era had so far remained unexplored. We have captured the 1940s period rather well and hope that the viewers also have a similar take. A blend of love in the time of change is what the show is all about. The serial is a journey of a couple through different phases in their lives, secrets, hopes, desires, conspiracy and opulence,” Hejmadi tells you.

s Prime Minister Narendra Modi hit the campaign trail for Bihar Assembly elec-tions, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has announced that it is sending a team to the State with a specific “BJP, anti-PM Modi” brief. AAP leader Ashutosh said on Saturday morning that the 20-member team would leave soon for Bihar, where they will cam-paign not in favour of any party, but to “ensure the defeat of the BJP”. The party has already announced that it will not contest the Bihar Assembly elections due in October, to ensure that anti-BJP votes are not divided.

The Pioneer has earlier

reported that Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal is likely to share dais with Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar

in the upcoming Bihar elec-tion campaign. Kumar has in recent days seemed to warm up to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.

It is noted that Kumar had met Kejriwal four times in the past five month after the AAP Government come to power in Delhi this February. Kumar has also supported Kejriwal’s demand to grant full Statehood to Delhi.

In the multiple meetings of the two Chief Ministers, there was speculation that Kejriwal could address a rally in Bihar in support of Kumar. There are also said to be plans to organ-ise a rally of Nitish Kumar in Delhi where the two could share stage. The Janata Dal (U) is going to contest Bihar Assembly election on the cor-ruption issue as what Kejriwal did in the Assembly poll in

Delhi early this year. The big question is whether Kejriwal will share dais with Lalu Prasad in Bihar polls. On the other hand, Kumar seeks Kejriwal’s help to get youth voters as the latter has charisma among youth or first time voters. On the other, Kejriwal is also trying to por-trait himself as alternative of non-Congress and non-BJP leader in the country.

Ashutosh said the team would be led by Dilip Pandey, who recently alleged that a Delhi Police van tried to run him over while his party was protesting against the murder of a teen in the Capital.

“PM Modi has made Delhi a police State... Anybody who opposes Modi will be beaten up,” Ashutosh alleged. The AAP has declared war on PM Modi’s Government, alleging that it is scuttling all its efforts at governing Delhi through the Centre’s representative in the Capital, Lieutenant-Governor Najeeb Jung. In Bihar, Nitish Kumar has stitched together an anti-BJP coalition with Rashtriya Janata Dal’s Lalu Prasad, a rival for years, and the Congress.

human trafficking racket was busted with the arrest of two alleged touts at the IGI airport. On the basis of the information provided by them, 21 Nepalese girls were rescued from South West Delhi. The girls were to be sent to Dubai, sources said. “On Saturday morning, a police team arrested two Nepalese agents of the human trafficking racket — Vishnu Tamang, 25, and Daya Ram, 33,” said MI Haidar, DCP of IGI airport police.

During interrogation, they revealed the location of 21

Nepalese girls in the age group of 20 to 35 years who were brought from Nepal to be sent to Dubai, Haider said.

Raids were conducted at several places in Mahipalpur and some incriminating doc-uments were seized, the offi-cer said. The incident comes on the heels of arrest of two employees of Air India SATS — Manish Gupta and Kapil Kumar — on July 22. They were allegedly instrumental in facilitating illegal departure of Nepalese girls to Dubai. Seven Nepalese girls were also res-cued and an FIR was regis-tered in this connection at IGI Airport, said the DCP.

During the investigation, Manish Gupta and Kapil Kumar had disclosed that some Nepalese agents were involved in trafficking of the girls by luring them with job offers in Gulf countries, he said.

They also told that sever-al other Nepsever-alese girls, who have been brought from Nepal, are staying in Mahipalpur area. Both the arrested agents admit-ted to trafficking of a large number of Nepalese girls to Gulf countries through fake travel documents and earning a commission of C4,000-5,000 for every girl, added the officer.

New Delhi: In a drive against narcotics, the

Delhi Police arrested nine people, including three Nigerians, and recovered contraband worth C3 crore. 100 kg of fine quality marijua-na, 905 gram of fine quality heroin and 65 gram of cocaine were recovered from the nine in four raids, Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Sanjeev Yadav said on Saturday. The heroin was meant to be smuggled to the US in courier pack-ets of embroidery, he said.

Nigerian nationals Anthony Umeh and Agbahia Ikenna were arrested from Jain Road in Uttam Nagar. They were allegedly indulging in export of heroin through cargo to various foreign countries, concealing it in embroidery articles like zari-gota.

“Agbahia Ikenna was found in possession of 800 gm of fine quality of heroin concealed in a packing of embroidered lace (gota),” he said, adding that its value was approximately C1.6 crore in the

international market. A team of Narcotics Cell arrested Mohammad Rabiul from Maharani Bagh-New Friends Colony crossing, on Friday, and recovered 105 gm of fine quality heroin from him. Four members of a drug syndicate were arrested near Green Park Gurdwara while try-ing to deliver cocaine to a client. Accordtry-ing to police, 60 gm cocaine was recovered from Ubabueze Chijioke, a Nigerian national, 2.5 gm cocaine from Rahul Chaudhary and 2.5 gm from Ankit Batra. Anshuman Tiwari, a Noida resident, was also arrested from the spot. Ubabueze was staying in India without valid documents. The recovered cocaine was believed to be worth about C65 lakh, he said.

On a tip-off, a police team arrested Parvez and Javed from NH-24 near Sanjay Lake, during deliv-ery of marijuana. Five bags containing 20 kg of marijuana in each, total 100 kg, were recovered from their possession, said the officer. SR

New Delhi: A city-based

busi-nessman and his brother were allegedly attacked and robbed of C22 lakh by three motorcycle-borne assailants at gunpoint on Saturday. The incident occurred around 1 pm in South Delhi’s Okhla Industrial area when Ramesh Kumar, 40, and his brother Santosh Kumar, 35, came out from the Bank of In-dia after withdrawing the money. “Ramesh and Santosh had withdrawn C22 lakh from Okhla branch. Three people riding on a bike approached them as soon as they came out of the bank and reached near their car. The culprits took away their money at gunpoint and fled the spot,” Deputy Commissioner of Police Mandeep Singh Randhawa said. Randhawa said the broth-ers were also attacked with a heavy object before the rob-bers snatched away their money-filled bag.

“Both the brothers were hit on their head and other parts of the body. Ramesh received minor injuries while Santosh is being treated for critical injuries in a nearby hospital,” the official added. Another police official said the assailants fired in the air before attacking the businessmen.

“Prima facie it seems the attackers knew that the busi-nessmen will withdraw a huge amount of money. Different police teams have been consti-tuted to nab the culprits,” the offi-cial added. Staff Reporter

Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) constable was char-red to death in a fire at the record room of CRPF academy in south Delhi’s RK Puram area on Saturday morning. The deceased has been identified as 42-year-old head constable Lingam Gowda. The incident was report-ed around 2 am on Saturday.

Fire officials say that the policeman was on guard at the record room and had collapsed due to suffocation. Gowda’s body was found under a computer table in the record room. According to fire officials, Gonda was not responding to the evac-uation. It is assumed that inhal-ing thick smoke must have made him lose consciousness. He was dead before he could be taken to the hospital. Gowda was posted at the 4th floor of the office in RK Puram Sector 1. CRPF officials said that Gowda had informed his superiors about the fire and had tried to douse it with a fire extinguisher.

The fire broke out in the Electronic Data Processing cen-tre of the force located in the building of training directorate office in RK Puram.

mid ongoing tussle between Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung and Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal over control of Delhi Government’s anti-corruption branch, the Kejriwal’s much hyped helpline number 1031 itself has come under scrutiny of the probe agency. Joint Commissioner of Police and Anti-Corruption Branch chief Mukesh Kumar Meena on Saturday ordered a probe into the tendering process for award of contract to operate the helpline number. Meena has

sought a detailed report on whether due procedure was fol-lowed while awarding the con-tract to a private firm and also questioned the competence of the agency in handling cor-ruption-related issues. The ACB’s move will further esca-late tussle between Meena and the Kejriwal Government.

Sources close to Meena said a private firm named ‘Caretel Infotech Limited’ has been awarded three-year con-tract by the Delhi Government for operating the anti-corrup-tion helpline 1031. The Delhi Government has not revealed where the helpline is operating.

It is also a fact that the Delhi Government had earlier trans-ferred all DANICS officials engaged in filtering of the call received on the helpline due to decline in the number of call. The helpline was launched by the Ar vind Kejriwal Government on April 5 this year. Since then, the Government has been locked in fight with the Lieutenant-Governor over control of the ACB. “It appears that the con-tract was awarded without transparent tendering process. It needs to be probed as to which companies had bid for the contract,” a source said. “I

have ordered an enquiry into the tendering process for award of contract to operate helpline number 1031. A detailed report has been sought into the mat-ter,” Meena said.

Sources said Meena has

also questioned whether the private agency has the expertise in dealing with such com-plaints. “It needs to come into the public domain as to who is operating the helpline number.

Who are these people and are they legally competent enough to deal with corruption com-plaints or take legal calls,” ACB officials said. Sources said the Delhi Government has

initial-ly awarded the contract for three years which can be extended for another two years on completion of the contract. The latest move is expected to escalate the tussle between the AAP Government and the Lt-Governor, who had appointed Meena as the ACB chief super-seding Kejriwal’s handpick

additional commissioner of police SS Yadav.

Interestingly, Meena had on Thursday announced scrap-ping of Delhi Government’s helpline number 1031 saying no complaints were being made on this number. He also launched two new helpline numbers that are functioning from ACB’s office at Civil Lines. However, the location of 1031 helpline number is still unknown. The Delhi Government cited confiden-tiality as the reason but sources said this could be done in order to suppress details regarding the private agency.

New Delhi: Swati Maliwal, whose appointment

as the Delhi Commission of Women (DCW) chief has become a bone of contention between the AAP Government and the Lieutenant Governor, on Saturday met the family of 20-year-old Vinay, who died in a road accident after which his family donated his eyes as per his wish.

“I went to meet Vinay’s family who has set an example for others. While their loss cannot be compensated but their dedication for their son’s organ donation pledge is something which

others should take a cue from,” Maliwal said. Maliwal also had a meeting with a few lawyers on Saturday. “I had a series of meetings with a few lawyers today with whom I discussed the cases of the acid attack victims I had met on Friday. I have promised them to reopen their cases and ensure justice,” she said.

On Tuesday, Jung had declared Maliwal’s appointment ultra vires and infructuous, saying it did not have legal sanctity and was in viola-tion of constituviola-tional provisions. Staff Reporter

he Delhi Police’s ‘Himmat’ application aimed to help women in distress has become popular among young girls and women in colleges and schools across the national Capital as compared to 181 helpline for women in distress run by Delhi Government. Now, the AAP Government is planning to hand over the day-to-day functioning of its 181 helpline to a private entity. The Government has asked to invite tender to hand over 181 operations to an NGO. The Himmat application, which has specialised SOS

safe-ty application which helps women raise alerts in cases of any emergency, has received a total 3,770 calls till last week, out of which 2,431 calls were from various parts of the city. It has received 23,646 test messages through

WhatsApp and Hike from the

national Capital. A total 44,571 people have down-loaded the application on their mobile phones, however, 8,725 people have registered themselves. Every hour, four women send text messages on its WhatsApp and Hike appli-cations, 12 SOS calls are received every day from various parts of the city. This application has

helped in preventing crime against women “tremendously” since its launch on January 1, this year. On the other hand, the 181 helpline, launched by erstwhile Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit after the Nirbhaya rape in December 2012, is being run by a team of 16 members having experience in handling cases of violence against women. The helpline has been facing one problem or the other ever since its administra-tive control was handed over from the CM’s office to the

Women and Child Development department.

First, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, who talks about CCTV cameras and mar-shals in buses to ensure safety of women, scraped the mobile phone application for 181 which would have helped women to easily seek assistance in times of distress. The application is quite similar to the application Himmat of Delhi Police. The proposal for the application was sent to Delhi Government six months ago after receiving a green signal for the trial run. But, the Government did not show much interest in it and refused to launch the application.
