WebApp applications
Predicting the best course of action is key to solving business problems. Whether your business is a Fortune 500 company, a mid-sized organization or a government agency, your success is directly tied to the ability to know which actions will lead to a solution.
Address business problems and user needs with customized Web applications
Armed with the predictive analytical power of SPSS WebApp Framework, your organization has the potential to focus everyone connected to a business problem on solving that problem. Applications built with SPSS WebApp are highly customizable, giving you flexibility and openness to meet user needs and help solve the problem at hand.
SPSS WebApp applications can help you solve a wide range of business problems, including:
■ Customer attraction
Profile your best customers and empower decision makers to focus attraction programs on prospects like them.
■ Cross-selling and upselling
Know what your customers will want next with predictive analysis. Then drive sales by empowering your organization with that information so they can offer the additional products and services customers are most likely to buy.
■ Customer retention
Identify customers who aren’t satisfied — before they end their relationship with you — and predict which actions will earn their loyalty.
■ Survey research
Improve your organization’s ability to predict what customers and citizens will want next by gathering and analyzing valuable attitudes and opinions.
■ Monitoring your business
Solve a number of business problems related to the measure-ment of key success factors — from getting daily sales reports into the right hands to detecting fraud.
Focus on the future with
predictive Web applications
What if everyone in your organization could
analyze your valuable data in the way that
makes the most sense for them? Imagine how
much decision making would improve
throughout your business if everyone could do
the analysis they need when they need it.
Give everyone the historical and predictive information they need to fulfill their role in solving business problems. Imagine how much easier it would be for your business to solve problems if everyone had instant access to real-time reports and predictive analysis of your data.
Reporting applications provide a starting point for better decision making — helping you see where your business stands. But it takes forward-looking predictive analysis of your data to help improve planning and your organization’s future. SPSS WebApp Framework is the only analytical application platform that gives you the ability to provide your organization with instant access to both reporting and prediction — in the customized way that makes the most sense for the decision maker.
Empower decision makers with predictive analysis
SPSS WebApp Framework enables your developers to build custom Web applications that are powered by SPSS. SPSS WebApp is a software development kit (SDK) for getting the analytical power of SPSS reporting and predictive analysis into the hands of anyone in your business who needs it, wherever they are. All they need is a Web browser and a connection to the Internet or their intranet — there’s no need for additional software or browser plug-ins.
Provide tailored analytical applications to help your organization tackle pressing business issues — from keeping track of sales with daily reports to increasing customer lifetime value with predictions of customer needs. Deploy applications for everyone from managers and executives who want timely reports with “drill down” capability, to analysts who want to select and prepare data sources, choose analytical procedures and control the presentation of results.

Give everyone the focused
information they need
Power decision making with the best and broadest analytics
To solve business problems, you must use many types of data in many ways. Different tasks and different data types require different analytical techniques. You need various types of historical analytics to see where you stand. And you need a wide range of predictive analytics to see where you are going and help you make decisions that positively impact the future.
SPSS WebApp contains the best and broadest range of analytical techniques available to provide both of these perspectives — SPSS WebApp enables you to build applications powered by any technique available in SPSS, ensuring that you have the exact capabilities you need — from clustering and crosstabs to regression and charting. Other analytical application frameworks don’t even come close to giving you all of the techniques you need to solve business problems in an easy
to use environment.
Customize information delivery for individual needs
SPSS WebApp applications can be designed for people with any level of analytical expertise so each person gets the targeted information they need to make the best possible decisions. This gives you the potential to focus everyone connected to a business problem on finding a solution with the exact analytics they need, in the way they need them. Deliver problem-solving information — from historical reports to predictions — via customized, Web interfaces so people get what they need with a short learning curve — at a minimal cost to your business.
Create the exact application each person needs — from one-click applications for executives, to applications for managers, such as the one shown here with more analytical options. Or even create applications that empower analysts with full analytical control.
Gallup saves time and money with SPSS WebApp
The Gallup Organization uses SPSS WebApp to provide analytical solutions to its customers around the world. Gallup, one of the world’s largest management consulting firms, helps organizations improve business performance by analyzing and understanding human attitudes and behavior.
One of Gallup’s goals is to provide its clients with easy and immediate access to information. In the past, Gallup faced some typical barriers when trying to meet this goal: time-consuming data preparation and distribution, hardware and software incompatibility and lack of sufficient computing resources on the client end. To overcome these barriers,
Gallup and consultants from SPSS used SPSS WebApp to develop a Web-based data access and analysis application for Gallup clients.
“The flexibility of the SPSS WebApp architecture makes it adaptable to specific user needs,” said Eldin Ehrlich, Gallup system engineer. “Gallup has long been an advocate of providing the right tool to the right user, and SPSS WebApp fits in perfectly with this goal. SPSS WebApp enhances our clients’ analytic experience through its ease-of-use and the ability to create client-specific functions which greatly reduce user errors, saving both time and money.”
IT managers — generate high ROI with SPSS WebApp
Maximize returns — minimize IT headaches SPSS WebApp minimizes the demands on IT departments and maximizes return on investment with easy installation, low training requirements and low ongoing maintenance. SPSS WebApp’s thin-client architecture means no local installation of any software is needed for the end users, and no plug-in or applet has to be downloaded to the browser. Centralization of the system and data makes administration easy and ensures that every user has the latest and greatest information at their disposal.
Tailor look and feel of SPSS WebApp Make interacting with the power of SPSS analytical technology as intuitive as possible by tailoring SPSS WebApp applications to match the look and feel of existing Web sites — or any look that’s easy for the end user. Application developers have complete control over colors, logos, layout and interaction. Standard “looks” are included to get you up and running quickly.
Keep data in context with XML
SPSS WebApp applications use XML for metadata to keep data in the right context throughout the analytical process — from accessing data for analysis to formatting the results. SPSS WebApp’s extensive use of XML also makes SPSS WebApp applications compatible with other applications that use XML in the same way. Control data access
Centralization of the system and security administration gives IT complete control over the end users’ data access. SPSS WebApp applications access relational databases via JDBC and ODBC drivers and read native SPSS files (SAV).
Securing your applications
To protect your organization’s analysis, the SPSS WebApp security suite includes three forms of security:
■ Authentication By providing user IDs and passwords, SPSS
WebApp enables organizations to create their own user databases or take advantage of the Windows NT security scheme.
■ Authorization SPSS WebApp provides both document and
category-level authentication assigned at the group level. This enables you to select who can view designed documents — or even see them listed in SPSS WebApp.
■ Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) protocol The SSL protocol is the
defacto standard for encryption of traffic between Web servers and browsers. The SPSS WebApp server is SSL-enabled — bringing a heightened level of security to sensitive data and analysis traveling between distributed users over the Web. Easy application development
Building SPSS WebApp applications is an easy task with a short learning curve for anyone familiar with Web scripting languages. An application developer need only know HTML, JavaScript and JSP fundamentals. SPSS WebApp applications can then be built using one or a combination of the analytical techniques available within SPSS Base and the modules. Java developers can also extend SPSS WebApp applications to add functionality users need, such as integration with another Web-based application.
Ê
The SPSS WebApp Framework provides an extensible development platform that should
appeal to both ISVs and IT departments. Now developers can create customizable, Web-based
analytical applications that can leverage the complete SPSS product line’s predictive,
reporting and OLAP functionality.
