February 17, 2021

This plan is in addition to the direction provided within the following supporting documents:

This document builds upon these guidelines:

● Centre for Disease Control COVID-19 Public Health Guidance for K-12 School Settings (February 4, 2021)

● British Columbia Provincial COVID-19 Health & Safety Guidelines for K-12 Settings (February 4, 2021)

SD28 COVID-19 Health & Safety Plan for Stage 2 (August 18, 2020)

● Bouchie Lake Site COVID-19 Health & Safety Plan (February 17, 2021)

Personal measures See Appendix A: Summary of School-Based Control Measures

Daily Health Check

 Students, staff and other persons in the school should stay home when sick

 All students and staff who have a confirmed case of COVID-19, OR confirmed by public health as a close contact of a confirmed case or outbreak OR travelled outside Canada in the last 14 days, must stay home and self-isolate as per public health direction.

 Parents and caregivers must assess their child daily for symptoms of illness before sending them to school. See Appendix B: Quesnel School District (No. 28) Daily Health Check. Symptoms to assess may include fever, chills, cough, shortness of breath, loss of sense of smell or taste, diarrhea, nausea and vomiting. The Ministry of Education’s K-12 Health Check app can be used to support daily health checks for students.

 Staff must assess themselves daily for symptoms of illness prior to entering the school. Hand hygiene and respiratory etiquette

 Staff and students will regularly wash hands throughout the school day.

 Students and staff should cough and sneeze into their elbow, sleeve, or a tissue. Throw away used tissues and immediately perform hand hygiene.

 Refrain from touching their eyes, nose or mouth with unwashed hands. Illness or Symptoms at School

 Any staff or student who develops symptoms at school must immediately be separated from others, put on a mask, and make arrangements to leave school as soon as possible.

 The student will be instructed to wash their hands and a non-medical mask and tissues will be provided to cover coughs or sneezes. The student will throw tissues away before performing hand hygiene.

 Staff will supervise the student while maintaining physical distance as best as possible. Staff will wear a mask and a face shield in the medical room when assisting sick students.

 The guardian will be contacted to pick up their child as soon as possible.

 The student will exit the building via the nearest exterior door. Staff will clean and disinfect the space where the student was separated and any areas used by them.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

 Staff (all adults) must wear a non-medical mask, or a mask and face shield both in and outside of their learning groups. Staff wearing masks must still maintain 2m physical distancing whenever possible. Masks must be worn in staff rooms unless you are seated and eating. Music teachers must wear masks when singing. Exceptions:

o when sitting in/standing at your desk/workstation in a classroom or learning space o when there is a barrier

o when eating or drinking; and o outdoors

 Schools will have non-medical mask and face shields available for staff. Wearing a non-medical mask, a face covering, or a face-shield (in which case a non-medical mask should be worn in addition to the face shield) in schools outside of the circumstances outline above is personal choice and will be respected.

Physical distancing

 All adults will maintain a 2m physical distance from each other, and from students, or wear a non-medical mask.

 Students will be taught the importance of physical distancing and are expected to demonstrate no physical contact with staff or other students, except family members from the same household.  Hallway travel will be on the right-hand side of the hall in both directions. Individuals are expected

to maintain 2m distance from others whenever possible, and to avoid congestion in the hallway. Students must ask permission to leave the classroom as usual.

 Additional floor markings and signs will assist with distancing and travel direction.

 Students from the same cohort may use the bathroom at the same time, unless there is an urgent need. Wait outside the door. Students will continue to have access to the accessible washroom if needed. Students are asked to wash their hands with soap and water for a minimum of 20 seconds before exiting the washroom and again, under staff supervision, upon re-entering their classroom.  Hallways and washrooms will be regularly monitored by staff members.

 Assemblies and other school-wide events will be held virtually to avoid large gatherings. Small assemblies of one cohort at a time (<60) will only be held when absolutely necessary.

 Classrooms will be configured to reduce prolonged face-to-face interactions where possible.

School arrival and departure

Adults

 Enter the school from the main door and follow the existing safety plan of signing in at first entry, washing hands, and signing out upon leaving the site.

 The school is not open to parents, volunteers or the general public unless an appointment is arranged.

Drop off and Pick Up

 All morning dropoff is on Bartkow Road facing west, towards the field. Students must not cross Bartkow Road without an adult. The south side of Bartkow Road is a no parking zone.

(3)

 Parents will be assigned a dropoff/pickup zone to reduce congestion, and should wait by their vehicle when possible.

 Families with a youngest child in K/1/2 park between the staff lot and the walking path by the front door

 Families with a youngest child in grade 3/4/5 park between the walking path and the bus lane exit  Families with a youngest child in grade 6/7 park west of the bus lane exit (along the fenced field)  Kindergarten parents may line up physically distant (2m) along the sidewalk to wait for entry or

dismissal.

 Parents must avoid approaching other students and staff (within 2m) and should not enter the school.

Student Arrival

 Bus supervision begins at 7:35am. Non-bus students should be dropped off just before 8:10 whenever feasible.

 All students will remain outside in their assigned morning cohort area. Keep backpacks and personal items on their person or in their cohort area until entering the school. Maintain no contact, and no sharing of equipment during outside play time.

 Breakfast Club nutrition will be available for any student in classrooms after the morning bell.  Students line up at their designated entrance when the bell rings. Teachers will meet students at their

entrance, allow gradual entry and proceed to boot rooms to put away outdoor shoes, then classrooms to store belongings and wash hands in class.

 Late arrivals (after 8:15) should phone or knock on the front door for admittance, as the doors will remain locked.

Dismissal

 Bus students will dismiss first at the bell and non-bus students will dismiss second. Students will wash hands in the classroom, gather belongings and exit from their designated door. Teachers may take their classes outside for the last instructional minutes of the day to avoid congestion at

dismissal time.

Outdoor time (arrival, recess, and lunch)

 Students will be expected to be outside much more than usual. All students must dress for the weather each day. Students will only stay inside if there is a safety risk (extreme cold, lightning, high wind, etc). In this case, students will remain in their classrooms at break times unless a cohort activity can be coordinated with supervising staff.

 Recess breaks will be staggered for half of the school at a time (2 cohorts), supervised by an appropriate number of staff.

 Lunch breaks will be staggered so half of the school are eating in class first and the other half are outside (2 cohorts), then switched to avoid cohorts mixing. Students in the first group will line up outside and wait for the second group to exit before coming back into the school.

 Two cohorts will be outside at the same time for recess and lunch. Learning cohorts will be assigned to an area of the playground, and will rotate daily.

(4)

 Students must not play any team or tag games that invite physical contact. Students may use individual play equipment belonging to the learning cohort.

 Teachers may, under their supervision, conduct appropriate learning activities and physical activity breaks outside.

 Classroom teachers will be at the designated entrances to support students lining up at the end of any outdoor time. Students will wait to be let into the building, then proceed to class to wash hands.

School supplies and personal items

 All items from home must be clearly labelled with a student’s name and contained in a washable bag or backpack. There is no central Lost and Found bin.

 Individual supplies should remain at school in a personal desk, tub or box. Any supplies provided to a student will remain with their other supplies (eg pencil). Any supplies that need to go home (eg homework, tools) should be transported to and from school in a closed backpack or bag.

 No supplies should be shared by any staff or student unless cleaned between users, including writing tools, office supplies, computers, other technology devices, headphones, gym equipment, music instruments or other items. Tools and equipment will be assigned to individual students whenever possible.

 Toys, free-time activities (crafts, games, devices) and soft items (stuffies, unnecessary clothing) should not be brought to school unless absolutely necessary, and should remain in a backpack until needed. Personal items are not to be shared with others. Do not store unnecessary items at school.  There is no evidence that the COVID-19 virus is transmitted via textbooks, paper or other

paper-based products. As such, there is no need to limit the distribution or sharing of books or paper based educational resources to students because of COVID-19.

Food and Drinks

 Water bottle and lunch items should be labelled and brought from home daily.

 Food cannot be shared between students, except by family members living in the same household. This includes any snacks and celebrations brought from home, both homemade and pre-packaged.  Water fountains are turned off, although bottles can be filled from a touchless filling station

 Any food provided by the school (Breakfast Club, lunch program, snacks) will be prepared and distributed by an adult and only touched by one receiving student.

Cleaning and Disinfection:

 General cleaning and disinfecting of the premises will occur once every night.

 High-touch surfaces and washrooms will be cleaned and disinfected once during the school day and again at night

 Paper hand towels will be provided rather than hand dryers.

 Hand sanitizer stations are at the main and west entrances of the school building, the library, computer lab, gym hallway and Strongstart room, and bottles in each classroom.
