Parish Life Weekly Schedule

My mother was a

“saver.” I think growing up during the Depression made a lot of people slow to throw things away. So when she died, we had a lot (and I do mean a lot) of items to pick through. One thing that she held for us was our grade school report cards. I still have mine. On the right side of the card were the grades for course work from Arithmetic to Spelling … rather equally divided between A’s and B’s and C’s (except for Penmanship, which they graded back then, and where I struggled to earn Cs). This is no surprise to any of you who’ve seen my handwriting.

The left side of the card was given over to “conduct marks”—

where checkmarks flagged a problem area. Take any of my report cards at random, look to the left, and there they are … a steady line of blue-checked boxes: “Lacks self-control.” Even then I was prone to open my mouth when I hadn’t been invited to speak. How I hated that word, self-control.

But how I respect that word now. I’m thinking it’s one of the things that separates children (and immature adults) from the truly grown-up. Children tend to do things only when they “feel” like it, which means they often leave things undone—homework, chores, beds.

Adults do things because they need to be done—paying bills, changing a diaper, emptying the dishwasher.

This is why fasting (self-control’s first cousin) is a Lenten tool.

There are lots of reasons to fast, but always it’s about letting my old nemesis, self-control, grow stronger. The ability to say “no” to yourself is the prerequisite for being able to love.

In line with that, I want to share a poem by WD Ehrhart, called

“Sins of the Father.” It’s a reflection on the human condition … and how what goes around, comes around. It starts with a parent’s lament:

“Today my child came home from school in tears.

A classmate taunted her about her clothes, and the other kids joined in, enough of them to make her feel as if the fault was hers, as if she can't fit in no matter what. …”

Anger rises in the father, until he reflects on his own childhood:

“ … it makes me think of things I haven't thought about in years. How we nicknamed Barbara Hoffman

"Barn," walked behind her through the halls and mooed like cows. We kept this up for years, and not

for any reason I could tell you now or even then except that it was fun.

Or seemed like fun. The nights that Barbara must have cried herself to sleep, the days she must have dreaded getting up for school.”

Then comes the “sadder but wiser” conclusion:

” … Now there's nothing I can do but stand outside my daughter's door listening to her cry herself to sleep.”

God, help us watch what comes out of our mouths … and heal those who, in our stupidity, we’ve wounded. Give us all your Lenten gift of self-control.

Fr. Mark

Readings for Third Sunday of Lent (March 04) (Exodus 20:1-17; 1 Corinthians 1:22-15; John 2:13-25) As Americans we tend to believe the fewer laws the better.

How very different was the mindset of Ancient Israel! The Jewish people saw law (well, the best laws) as a reflection of God’s own mind—and to know the mind of God was always a good thing. The purpose of the law in the Bible then is not to ruin our day or hem us in, but to instruct people in how to live well by having right relationships to God, others, and the material world. They are like the guard rails built on the edges of curving highways. There may seem to be shortcuts, but there never are. God’s law keeps us safe. What specific words of instruction in today’s readings did you especially need to hear? What relation- ships in your life might call for re-examination or change during this Lenten season?

The “Lenten Tools” Tables have been picked over, but there are still a few things there to help At the gathering areas in both churches you will find a buf- fet table of options to encourage your keeping of Lent—

the “Little Black Books” are gone, but there are still some seasonal copies of “The Word Among Us,” short back- ground articles on the season, contact cards for the “Best Lent Ever” e-devotional, “build a cross-shaped life” pocket reminders, and Catholic Relief Service Rice Bowls to gather your alms to do good in the world as hunger relief.

“The Stations of the Cross” at St. Michael’s on Lenten Wednesday evenings (and other times) We invite you to take a thoughtful walk with Jesus on his Way of the Cross on Wednesdays at 6:00 pm at St.

Michael’s Church. We have three different formats that we will vary from week to week. This week for Stations, Deacon Michael will lead “The Way of the Cross with Mary”.

Stations of the Cross will also follow Novena on Tuesdays at 6:20 pm at Church of the Resurrection using “The Way of the Cross with Mary” format.

If you can’t make these times, at the back of both Eastside Parishes there is a basket of Way of the Cross formats that can be prayed solo or by small groups whenever you like.

Training for New Readers on Monday, February 26 (and a Little Update for Veterans)

We have been recruiting new liturgical ministers over the last weeks, and now would like to start training them—

beginning with new readers. Monday evening, February 26, at 6:30 pm at the Church of the Resurrection. At the same time, Fr. Mark welcomes current readers from both parishes to attend for a little renewal, as he hopes to make a couple little adjustments to our procedures … so you veterans are invited back as well.

Confirmation Small Group Leaders Needed Preparation sessions for high school teens who will be confirmed this year will begin in March on Wednesday evenings.

We invite faith-filled people who would like to share the journey with these young disciples to be a small- group leader. Resources and lesson plans will be provided for the small groups which take place during the five gath- ered sessions led by the Director of Faith Formation.

Confirmation Retreat Team Members Needed Teens preparing for the sacrament of Confirmation will participate in an overnight retreat April 14-15. Retreats are one of the most impactful experiences offered within Faith Formation.

Please prayerfully consider sharing your own faith by being a part of the team, led by the Director of Faith Formation, that will facilitate small-groups, prayer experiences and activities throughout the weekend.

Please contact Michelle by email (michelle@eastsideparishes.org)

or phone (715-842-1810)

for details, if you are interested in serving as a Small Group Leader, on the Retreat Team,
