HIGH ADVENTURE TEAM OF THE SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA COUNCIL
In 1973, when interest in backpacking began to “snowball,” the SFBAC Camping Committee organized a Trails and Awards Committee to prepare and present training in Basic backpacking.
That name was later changed to The High Adventure Team and is generally referred to as “HAT.”
In 1978, following a U.S. Forest Service revamp of their wilderness use policy, and several incidents on the trail suffered by Scout Troops with untrained leaders, the SFBAC Camping Committee submitted to the SFBAC Executive Board a recommendation, that in order to secure a Tour Permit, at least one leader on the trek be certified as having
completed the Basic Backpack Awareness Course. The SFBAC Executive Board, after considerate deliberation, authorized this and The High Adventure Team was directed to provide that training.
HAT is a service organization, as is the Order of the Arrow. HAT’s objectives are to provide access and opportunity for leaders to secure the knowledge and the skills required to provide a safe and productive outdoor high adventure experience to the scouts they serve and to give leaders the courage to make that effort.
Over the years, in response to requests from leaders, more opportunities for training have been added. They include, canoeing, cycling, first aid and wilderness first aid, climbing and rapelling, and white water safety. An adult winter camping course, to supplement the fine training offered annually by the Order of the Arrow for Boy Scouts, is also offered each December.
Each of the councils in Western Region offer a number of awards that may be earned by local units, anywhere, but most are on specific trails in the Sierra. HAT coordinates efforts so the awards can be earned by units on an inter-council basis. The RIM OF THE BAY and the new OHLONE WILDERNESS REGIONAL TRAIL awards program are products of our High Adventure Team.
HAT also publishes quarterly, “Boots and Blisters,” a newsletter related to outdoor pursuits. Boots and Blisters is published and distributed to every registered Scoutmaster and to all graduates of HAT training.
HAT is an all volunteer group and is constantly in search of new members who can share their expertise, bolster the existing group, and assist in providing help and encouragement to our unit leaders.
If you need assistance on your High Adventure activities, including Philmont, contact the High Adventure Team through the SFBAC office.

Highlander - An Ongoing Quest
Started in 2003, the Mt. Diablo Silverado Council’s Highlander program encourages youth in Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and Venturing to experience the outdoor wonders that exist within the Council. The program is a series of 14 progressive hikes with a center patch awarded with the first hike and a rocker for each hike. Patches are available for purchase at the MDSC Trading Post, or by mail. Many of the hikes are specific trails, but others, Briones for example, may be awarded for any hikes done within the park. Most of the hikes can be done by youth of any age, however the more difficult ones should only be attempted by Boy Scouts or Venturers.
All of the trips can be completed as day hikes, and overnight camping is available at or near every site. Specific information on camping facilities is listed for each hike. Please remember to file a tour permit and get all necessary approvals ahead of time.
Maps and further information can be obtained from a number of sources. Often State Parks have very good maps available through a visitor’s center or ranger station, in addition to informational flyers about the park.
Topographic maps from the USGS can also be a good source, however they do not always contain the most complete or up-to-date trail information.
Finally, have fun! We are extremely lucky to have so many beautiful outdoor areas within the Council, do not let them go to waste. Get out there and go hiking!

CAMP ISOM, near Newman, CA
Camp Isom is a 160 acre primitive camp located along Orestimba Creek in the Coast Range, nine miles west of Newman. It is 10 miles south of the Diablo Grande Golf Courses and is situated at the bottom of a steep canyon with a seasonally flowing creek running through it.
The landscape is dotted with pine, oak, and sycamore trees, and in the spring beautiful wildflowers pop up everywhere. A variety of animals are regularly seen wandering through the area such as deer, wild pig, quail, turkeys, rattlesnakes, squirrels, coyotes, and mountain lions along with many other creatures large and small. One prominent feature of Camp Isom is a permanent spring that empties into a series of three ponds in which fish and water lilies abound. The camp is three miles by air and six miles hiking from Henry Coe State Park. In the past Scouts, have hiked from Isom over to Coe Park and exited to Morgan Hill.
This is a true wilderness experience.
This should be treated as a primitive campground and campers must haul out all trash. There is an outhouse located at the camp. The roads are dirt and should not be attempted unless there has been at least seven days without rain. The soil is clay and impassable even by 4-wheel drive vehicles after a rainstorm, as the road is very steep. Pickups and 4-wheel drive vehicles are recommended, as the road is rough in places but well maintained for back road travel.
There are two campsites near the creek. Bring all you need to set up a primitive campsite, including water and wood. Make reservations at the Modesto council office.
