Lassithi Greece is less of a tourist hub and mostly known for its beautiful natural surroundings. This is the easternmost region of Crete and its most

tourist developed villages are Agios Nikolaos, which is also the capital of the prefecture, Elounda, Sitia, and Ierapetra.

In the center of the prefecture lies the Plateau of Lassithi, a beautiful natural area with windmills, mountainous villages, impressive gorges, caves such as Milatos or Trapeza, and a lot of greenery. In fact, this

Plateau is one of the most fertile regions of Greece.

The history of Lassithi started in the Minoan times and many ancient sites can be found all over it, such as the ancient towns

of Pressos, Lato, Gournia, and Vasiliki.

Lassithi Things to do

Not as open to tourism as the rest of Crete, there are many chances for alternative things to do Lassithi. Diving is a popular activity, particularly in places of northern Lassithi, where there are organized centers that offer diving trips and courses of all levels. The seabed of Lassithi has interesting flora, fauna and some wrecks to explore.

The eastern side of Lassithi is great for windsurfing. Wind sports are practiced in Xerokampos and the other beaches of Palekastro, but not in organized level. The inland of Lassithi is great for hiking. Many hiking trails cross impressive gorges, authentic villages and the famous Plateau of Lassithi.

Eat & Drink in Lassithi

Places to eat and drink in Lassithi are numerous. As this is a region with both tourist and secluded places, visitors will find all range of

entertainment venues, from seaside taverns and upscale restaurants too loud bars and clubs. Most of these venues are found in Sitia, Agios

Nikolaos, and Elounda, the busiest tourist resorts in Lassithi. The less touristic resorts have only restaurants, cafe and bars, not large clubs, and keep a more family atmosphere. Most authentic places to eat and drink in Lassithi are found in traditional villages and secluded beaches, such as villages in Lassithi Plateau.

“The Hope” To Rakadiko Tou Kamari

The Hope to Rakadiko Tou Kamari is situated on a hill, overlooking the bay. It serves traditional Cretan cuisine, using only high quality, fresh ingredients.

Don't forget to drink some raki with honey to finish off your meal.

Basilico

Basilico Ristorante is situated by the sea in Agios Nikolaos, in Lasithi. The restaurant has a beautiful view, overlooking the harbor and the beach. It is a different option for a delicious meal in Agios Nikolaos, as its menu is mainly based on Italian cuisine. Visit Basilico and simply enjoy every moment spent in that place!

Ergospasio

The restaurant opened in 2008 and it is located just above the sea, in an atmospheric setting in Elounda. The building was in the past a carob processing plant in Crete before it was turned into a restaurant.

The venue offers its customers the finest products from across Greece, unique quality delicacies, fresh fish, seafood as well as fine wines and drinks. Enjoy a meal sitting on the balcony with a breathtaking view.

Karnagio

Karnagio is located near the lake of Voulismeni at the heart of Agios Nikolaos.

This Greek tavern strictly collaborates only with Cretan producers, using Cretan herbs and products from local villages around the area of Mirabello. The excellent food, the courteous staff and the idyllic atmosphere have established Karnagio as one of the best dining options in Agios Nikolaos.

Bajamar is a cafe bar in Agios Nikolaos, which stands out for its unique style.

Rudi's Bar is a plush music bar in Elounda in the heart of the prefecture of Lassithi. Customers can enjoy an exquisite evening, listening to good music while savoring their drinks.

Lassithi Beaches

Vai Beach

Location: 25 km east of Sitia

Description: It is the only indigenous wild date palm grove of Greece, extending over an area of 250 square kilometres and consists of 5000 palm trees which make it the largest known palm tree forest throughout Europe. The incredible scenery makes Vai one of the most impressive beaches of Greece.

Istro Beach

Location: 12 km south of Agios Nikolaos

Description: The crystal clear blue waters and the white sand are two of the main characteristics that have made this beach so popular.

It is surrounded by green slopes covered with vast vegetation creating a

magical landscape and a lovely color antithesis in the canvass of nature. There are various facilities such as sundecks and umbrellas, as kantines for food and drink. Also the visitor will find many taverns that specialize in the Cretan

cuisine and the fresh seafood. Istro beach is quiet and ideal for relaxation.

Makrigialos Beach

Location: 24 km east of Ierapetra

Description: Because of its long stretch of sand and its crystalline blue waters, Makrigialos has become one of the most popular tourist resorts in the area. In the wider region, there are some ruins of a Minoan mansion.

Xerokampos Beach

Location: 20 km from Ziros

Description: There are few taverns and rental accommodation in the wider region, but the family atmosphere is not affected by tourism. In Xerokambos, you will enjoy delicious Cretan food and relaxing views to the sea.

Some days in the summer, the beach is affected by the strong winds but in late August, the winds calm down and visitors can enjoy the crystal clear waters of Xerokambos. In August 29th, the locals organize a traditional feast (panigiri) in the name of Saint John.

Palekastro Beach

Location:90 km east of Agios Nikolaos

Description:The sand is fine and the waters crystal, while the strong wind that blows in the afternoon make this beach a popular place for windsurfing.

Interesting Minoan ruins have been excavated in the area near Palekastro. Few tourist facilities exist in the region, which make it an ideal destination for some peace and privacy.

Havania Beach

Location: closest beach to Agios Nikolaos

Description: It consists of sand and crystalline waters. Havania is an excellent choice for all ages given the fact that it offers a wide range of facilities and watersports equipment.

The crystal clear waters allure the tourists to visit this place for their summer holidays as it is a quite destination full of trees. The settlement of Agios Nikolaos is quite popular for its tourist development offering all types of accommodations, restaurants and shops.
