Dear Friends in Christ,

Happy 2nd Day of Christmas! The song, “The 12 Days of Christ- mas” comes from the Church’s observance of the days between Dec. 25 (Christmas) and Jan. 6 (the old date for Epiphany) as being very important days to remember the great gift of the Son of God becoming human for the salvation of the entire world. The Church celebrates every day of the first week of the Christmas Season as if each day were Christmas itself (Dec. 25 – Jan. 1), recognizing that there is no way to adequately cele- brate the mind-blowing truth of God becoming human in order to save us. Today we celebrate a facet of this magnificent mystery, the Feast of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Jo- seph. The Gospel for this feast day is about Mary and Joseph

“losing” Jesus when he was 12 years old, only to find him teaching the teachers of the Law of God in the temple. Then Jesus submitted to their authority and “went down with them and came to Nazareth and was obedient to them; and his moth- er kept all these things in her heart. And Jesus advanced in wisdom and age and favor before God and man.” (Luke 2:52) Out of love, the Son of God becomes one with us completely in our humanity (except sin), even to growing in wisdom under the tutelage of his parents, even to living a life hidden from the world until he was 30 years old.

Since the weekday Masses for Wednesday evening and Thurs- day morning of this week are on the last Wednesday and Thursday of the month, there will be Anointing of the Sick at both these Masses. Also, this coming Saturday, the first day of 2022, is a holy day—the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God.

Though it is not obligatory because it falls on a Saturday, con- sider starting the New Year on the right foot by attending one of the Holy Day Masses.

Because the company which publishes our bulletin has to make allowances for longer shipping times during this month of December and time off for its workers during the Christmas Season, our parish office has to send in the bulletin much earli- er than usual this month. Normally, the bulletin draft is sent on Tuesday afternoon for the following Sunday bulletin, but the information in today’s bulletin had to be sent in 10 days before. Thus, for this bulletin and next Sunday’s bulletin the information in the financial section will be at least one week behind what it normally is.

We are grateful to Craig Huber of Huber Funeral homes for donating hundreds of 2022 Catholic Art Calendars to our par- ish. Craig oversees Huber-Benson Funeral Home in El Reno and Huber-Reynolds Funeral Home in Minco. He is a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in El Reno and has donated these calendars to our parish for many years.

The parish offices are closed this week in observance of the importance of this first week of Christmas, the octave of Christmas. During this Christmas Season, which also serves as a break from academic studies, you may see some of our former “summer seminarians” around the parish, such as Michael Mollman or Kaz Biesiada. Please pray for the repose of the soul of Ralph DeLuccio, and pray for his wife, Mary Jane, and all his family who mourn his death. Ralph and Mary Jane are former members of our parish and were active in many ways.

In the joy of Christ, Rev. Joseph A. Jacobi

The Epiphany of The Lord January 2, 2022

Matthew 2: 1-12

We are going to go back to Matthew’s Gospel next week to tell a wonderful story that still speaks to us today because Epiphany is really not a story about Magi. It is a story of resistance to imperial violence.

We must remember the whole story from beginning to end. The consequence of this visit was a rampage of violence that left mothers screaming over dead children. We can still hear them in real life. Our world still teems with refugees, wailing mothers, and murderous foreign policies on every continent. As much as this world might want to sentimentalize this Gospel story, Epiphany is a political event through which the Gospel of Life challenges a culture and an empire of death. Epiphany is a story of re- sistance by people of conscience told to give us cour- age and hope at a time of imperial discontent. The Bible has seen and recorded this period of time be- fore and it assures us that God is with us. It tells a story of God sneaking into our history out of sight like a thief in the night. The light still sneaks into the darkness of this world. The issue now is simply whether or not we shall recognize it and act accord- ingly.
