RECYCLE RIGHI IT MATTERS. #fightRecyclingContamination
We need your help! Unacceptable items-such os garden hoses, plastic bags; diapers, needles, medical waste, propane tonks, and bolleries os well as yard and food waste expose employees at the recycling facility to unsafe materials, lower productivity and reduce the quality of recyclable materials. This increases the costs of recycling operations and lowers the value of your recyclables.

MEDICINE DISPOSAL
The proper disposal of unused or expired medications protects the environment and human health and safety.
With the abuse of prescription medicine on the rise, it is important to promptly and properly dispose of unused, expired medications. Use one of the options below to reduce the risk of people improperly consuming or handling medications .
WHAT SHOULD YOU DO WITH UNWANTED/EXPIRED MEDICATIONS?
Do NOT flush medications down the drain or toilet.
Medicines flushed down the drain or toilet pass through waste water treatment plants. These facilities do not treat water for such chemicals, which end up directly in our lakes and streams.
Do NOT throw medications in the trash.
Medicines disposed in landfills can potentially seep into and contaminate surrounding groundwater.
Check with your pharmacy to see if they hove a drug take back program.
Bring unwonted medicine to a RRRASOC Household Hazardous Waste Event.
Drop off unwanted medicine to your local Police Department:
City of Farmington Hills Police Department - 31655 W'. 11 Mile Road (248-871-2600)
\
City of Farmington Police Deportment - 23600 Liberty:(248-474-4700)
, "-
*The above locations accept unused medications in pill form only. No liquid medication or sharps.
*Keep medications in their original container. Make personal information unreadable.
Do not remove the name of the medication.

What is Household Hazardous Waste?
Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) is products used in and around your home that have one or more of the following characteristics: Corrosivity; Toxicity; Flammability;
Reactivity. Read the label to determine which products require special handling.
Warnings such as "poisonous or toxic", "flammable or ignitable", or "corrosive" are indicators that the items should be disposed of as HHW. Cleaners that contain strong acids, bleach or ammonia are also hazardous.
Paint and paint products that are oil-based and require the use of paint thinner or mineral spirits are hazardous. Water-based paints are not hazardous and can be prepared for safe disposal with household trash . To prepare latex paint for curbside pickup, mix paint with an absorbent such as cat litter, sawdust, or commercial paint hardener. Once the paint is solidified, place it in a trash bag and set it out on regular collection day. Learn how to reduce and reuse leftover paint on the RRRASOC website.
What to Do With Unwanted HHW
HHW requires special handling and disposal through licensed hazardous waste companies.
Residents are encouraged to bring HHW to a special drop-off event, sponsored by RRRASOC and Its member communities. The reverse side of this flyer lists the dates and locations of HHW collection events.
RRRASOC residents can drop off HHW at ERG Environmental Services in Livonia on non-event days without a fee . HHW pickup from your home is also available for a fee.
For more information on drop-off or pickup services visit the RRRASOC website at rrrasoc .org
Tips for Transporting Household Hazardous Waste

Why Does Proper Disposal of Paint Matter?
Disposing of unwanted paints, solvents and thinners dawn sinks and dralns1 onto the ground or into the trash, can oveiwhelm and damage sewage systems, destroy septic tanks and damage the protective liners of landfi!ls, These Items can also contaminate sur1ace and groundwater, which we depend on for drinking water and enjoy for recreation. Follow the paint disposal tips and guidelines described In this leaflet to ease threats to human health and the environment.

OIL BASED PAINTS
• Oil based paints are considered a household hazardous waste and should be disposed through household hazardous waste collection events. Check the ARRASOC.org website for event schedule or ask for the RRAASOC Household Hazardous Waste flyer.
• Handle paints containing petroleum distillates with great care. They are ignitable and their fumes are potentrally harmful. Always follow label directions •
. • You can solidify oll-based paints by allowing their volatile contents to evaporate in a well-ventilated area. Then, mix remaining liquids with absorbents and allow it to harden.
• Alternatively, apply leftover paint to scrap lumber or cardboard. Keep children and p~ts away while these paints are drying. Then place these scraps with your regular trash.
SOLVENTS
• You can urecycle" used solvents by allowing paint pigments to settle to the bottom1 and later pouring the clarified liquid into a new or recycled (and accurately labeled} container. Mix the remaining solvent/paint sludge with an absorbent and dispose with normal trash.
Paints containing lead, cadmium or mercury are highly toxic and must be taken to a household hazardous-waste collectlon.

LATEX PAINT
• Latex paint is also referred to as water-based, acrylic, or emulsion paint.
It is comprised mostly of water and is not considered a hazardous waste.
It can be safely disposed of in your household trash as long as it is solidified first.

a drying agent. Mix an equal amount of an absorbent material into the can and allow the paint to dry. Use cat litter, sawdust, plaster of Paris, Oil~dri, or "waste paint hardeners" found at home improvement centers as absorbent material. The paint could dry quickly, depending on how much drying agent you include in the can.
• Pour thin layers (about 1

Allow the paint to dry one layer at a time until all paint has hardened.
Once the paint is thoroughly dry, place it In a regular trash bag and put it out for trash collection.

Sharps should be disposed of in an FDA approved container. If one is not available, you can make one from an empty household container with these characteristics:
• Made from sturdy, rigid plastic (used laundry detergent bottle)
• Does not tip over
• Has a cap that does not puncture easily
• Does not have any leaks
When the container is three-quarters full, place the cap on
it
and tapeit
shut. Write '_'SHARPS" onJhe outside and place in your household garbage. Sharps containers should NEVER go in your curbside recycling bin or to a drop-off recycling location. Used sharps and their containers are NOT recyclable; they pose a serious hazard for workers at Material Recovery Facilities. For more information, go to:
