Dear Parishioners,
Based upon some recent conversations, it seems Catholics often struggle to engage constructive conversation about the rainbow flags associated with “pride month.” On the one hand, advertisements for pride month employ terms such as dignity and freedom, which are beloved American ideals. But on the other hand, most Catholics sense that the pride month agenda is problematic.
In this column, I will try to offer a few brief talking points to help you converse about this in charity and truth.
First, every human person is created in the image of God. This means that we are endowed with intellect and will and called to loving communion with God and with one another. Catholics must fight to uphold the dignity of every human person, from conception to natural death, without exception. God infinitely loves every human being and so should we.
Second, love is not merely a positive sentiment toward another person. Nor does love entail the unmitigated affirmation of the life choices of another person. Rather, “to love” someone is “to will” what is good for that person and “to act” so as to help him or her achieve the good. The good of the human person is rooted in the truth of human nature.
Third, the truth, or meaning, of our human nature is given to us by the Creator. Creation is arrestingly beautiful because of its form or pattern. By observing such order within the human person, we can discern an essential truth of human nature, which is that God creates the human person in two different ways, as male and female. Furthermore, he calls human beings to be united in marriage, which is the lifelong union of a man and woman and any children they might bring forth. Marriage promotes the true value of human sexuality, which has an observable, twofold purpose: it is procreative because it has the potential to generate new life and unitive because it strengthens mutual love. While this vision of human sexuality might seem traditional, static, and even oppressive, the precise opposite is true: in every age, it permits the dynamism of authentic human love, which liberates human beings to live according to their true dignity.
I hope these three talking points will help you constructively engage conversation about this very sensitive topic. Reasoning from these three points, it is clear that the “pride month” agenda is problematic because it encourages a lifestyle that is not in accord with the truth of our nature. When people experience gender discordance or same sex attraction, the Church looks upon such people with love, recognizes their authentic dignity, and encourages them to live in accord with that dignity.
Specifically, this means helping people walk the path of authentic liberation by refraining from actions which do not accord with the truth of their nature and therefore are not good for them.
I cannot overstate the importance of being sensitive when engaging in these conversations. Just about everyone has family members or friends who experience gender discordance or same sex attraction. Furthermore, these experiences can be a source of significant suffering for people and their families and friends. We should also be mindful of the fact that
experiencing gender discordance or same sex attraction is not in itself sinful nor does it reduce the intrinsic dignity of every person who is loved eternally and perfectly by God. Rather, culpability is involved only when acting upon such experiences or inclinations.
With humility and sincerity, we must promote the good of every individual so that we can promote the good of society. To borrow St. Paul’s words, this means “living the truth in love” (Eph 4:15). In this context, living the truth in love means not supporting the pride month agenda. While much more could be said about this topic, my hope is that these few considerations will help equip you to explain the Church’s teaching, which is ordered toward the full flourishing of every human person, created in the image of God and unconditionally loved by Him.
In Christ, Father Strand
