Principal Investigator : Dr A Vijayakumari

Department/School: EEE, Power Electronics Lab, Amrita School of Engineering, coimbatore

Date of Submission: May 2017

Research Project Title: FIELD ORIENTED CONTROL OF BRUSHLESS DC FOR ELECTRIC VEHICLE APPLICATION

Abstract of research:

This work is focused on sensorless control of Brushless DC (BLDC) motor. BLDC have replaced DC motors and other AC motors earlier used for applications relating to automotive applications.

The working environment for this kind of applications necessitates the requirement of a very high power density, robust motor to be in used for the operation. Unlike the DC motor that have mechanical commutator, BLDCs are commutated electronically hence are also known as electronically commutated motors. BLDCs are electronically commutated, and the stator commutation depends on the rotor position information. The rotor position can be taken either by using a sensor or a sensorless approach. This work focus on sensor less method.

Proposed research Plan

 Simulation verification of the Sensorless FOC with rotor position estimation

 Hardware implementation of the sensorless rotor position estimation using BEMF estimation

 Integration of sensorless rotor position algorithm with FOC for the BLDC motor using Texas Piccolo board along with GUI developed using MOTORWARE software from Texas

This work focus on sensor less method.

Sensorless rotor position techniques are based on Direct Back Electromotive Force (BEMF), or Indirect Back EMF Integration, which needs deterministic motor model. Both the rotor position estimation are studied and compared in the research work along with the Field Oriented Control (FOC) of BLDC motor is discussed in the thesis. Sensorless algorithm use D-Q transformations of the stator current. BLDC control is carried out using FOC, in order to meet the desired performance for Electric vehicle applications that require motor to work over a constant speed loop, the motor has to be operated using a suitable velocity control loop. These types of controllers are achieved by using a conventional proportional- integral (PI) controller.
