Back In Action
The Kings will play their first game of the season tonight against Minnesota, their first since Mar. 11, the day before the NHL paused due to COVID-19.
The league realigned the divisions to minimize travel, placing the Kings in the West and will play each of its opponents eight times.
The Opponents
Pausing On A High Note
The NHL season paused during the Kings’ longest winning streak of the season and longest active winning streak in the NHL at seven consecutive games (Feb. 26-Mar. 11, 2020). It was also the Kings’ longest since they won eight consecutive games Nov. 25 – Dec. 9, 2017. The Kings went undefeated in March and were 10-2-1 over the last 13 games, including 8-1-1 at home.
Quick On His Feet
Should Jonathan Quick start tonight it will be his 12th straight opening night start for the Kings. His record in those opening night contests is 4-5-1. The last goalie to start a season besides Quick was Jason Labarbera in 2008.
Jersey Number Changes
Three players have recently changed uniform numbers. Defenseman Kale Clague has changed his number from 34 to 58. Forward Carl Grundstrom has changed his number from 38 to 91. He would be the first Kings player to appear in a game wearing that number. Forward Gabriel Vilardi has changed his number from 42 to 13. As announced previously, forward Austin Wagner has changed his number from 51 to 27. Additionally, the new Kings players are sporting their new threads. Troy Grosenick will wear #1, Mark Alt will wear #5, Olli Maatta will wear #6 and Andreas Athanasiou will wear #22.
New Faces
The Kings acquired a few fresh faces during the offseason, including forwards Lias Andersson and Andreas Athanasiou, and defenseman Olli Maatta.
Andersson appeared in 17 games last season with the Rangers, posting one point (0-1=1). He has appeared in 66 games since making his NHL debut during the 2017-18 season, posting nine points (3-6=9). Maatta, a two-time Stanley Cup Champion with the Pittsburgh Penguins, tallied 17 points (4- 13=17) in 65 games last season with the Blackhawks. In nine playoff games, he led the team with a plus-seven rating and paced the defensemen with three goals and six points (3-3=6). Athanasiou is entering his sixth season in the NHL, posting 24 points (10-14=24) in 46 games with the Detroit Red Wings last year. The Kings also signed defenseman Mark Alt and goaltender Troy Grosenick to one-year, two-way contracts.
World Junior Championships Domination
The Kings had an NHL-best nine prospects compete at the 2021 World Junior Championships. Team USA’s Alex Turcotte (3-5=8; 7GP), Arthur Kaliyev (3-5=8; 7GP) and Brock Faber (0-5=5; 7GP) took on fellow Kings prospect and Team Canada’s Quinton Byfield (2-5=7; 7GP) in the gold medal round.
Turcotte scored the eventual game-winning goal in USA’s 2-0 victory over Canada. Finland’s Kasper Simontaival ranked third among his team in scoring (4-3=7; 7GP) and 14th overall in the tournament. Other Kings performances this year at the tournament: Tobias Bjornfot (SWE; 0-2=2; 5GP), Martin Chromiak (SLV; 1-0=1; 5GP), Jordan Spence (CAN; 1-0=1; 2GP) and Lukas Parik (CZE; 1-1-0; 3.77 GAA, .883 SV%, 1 SO).
