The beginning of today’s gospel passage tells of a man who is driving out demons in Jesus’ name, but is not one of “the Twelve.”
After members of the “Twelve” fail in their attempt to stop him, they come to Jesus and want him to intervene. Jesus tells them to consider the man not as a competitor but at a companion along the way. He may not be traveling with the Twelve, but “whoever is not against us is for us.” (An early nod toward ecumanism?)
In the next part of today’s gospel we find Jesus using images that are quite severe, if taken literally. It speaks of drowning a person who would cause little ones to sin, of cutting off our hands and feet if they cause us to sin. As he so often does, Jesus uses stories and concrete situations to teach basic truths. He is inviting us to consider what situations or possessions tempt us toward sin in our everyday lives. Should we be looking for ways to remove these events or items from our lives so as to live in greater freedom and holiness?
As Christians, we are called to examine our lives regularly and when we find sinfulness
taking root, to decisively weed out the tendencies that tempt us to stray from the path of
holiness. The way is spelled out in the poetry of Psalm 19, the psalm assigned to today’s
liturgy.

Exploring The Gospel According To Mark
“Go into the whole world and proclaim the gospel to every creature.” – Jesus at the Commissioning of the Eleven, Mark 16:15.
Thought to be the earliest of the four Gospels, the Gospel of Mark is a fast-moving, vivid
account of the ministry, suffering, and death of Jesus.
Our group will meet in-person at SJB every week for nine weeks to discuss chapters from the Gospel of Mark using the Little Rock Scripture Study guides, Thursday
evenings from 7:00-9:00 p.m. – September 16 to November 11. This will be an evening class only.
The limit for the Parish Office Large Conference Room is 17 people. Masks are required.
If you are interested in joining this Bible Study, please contact Tim Brown, at
[email protected] or 301-946-7636. Once you are on the list, you will get instructions to prepare for the first class.
Bereavement Ministry
Due to the continued risk of Covid 19 and its variants, our Bereavement Ministry is still unable to safely hold in person monthly meetings at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. We know that so many are grieving
and may not have any other outlet for expressing the grief that they feel. We are brokenhearted that we cannot be with each person to share the grief and comfort one another. If you need to speak with someone in the Ministry, please leave a message for Ruth Anne McCormick at 301-622-0664 or Eileen Bonhag at 301-421-9065. You may also email Ruth Anne ([email protected]).
SJB Leisure Club Meetings Starting Soon
The SJB Leisure Club will have its meetings this year on the second Wednesday of each month instead of on Friday. Wednesday is the only day available to us for use of the Lyon Center. We will not have a September meeting. Our first
meeting will be on Wednesday, October 13, at 10:30 a.m.
in the Lyon Center. More information to follow.
Requesting Volunteers for Altar Linen Society
Would you consider helping the ladies of SJB wash the altar linens used for Mass? We usually have a group of nine but are currently short a few. It requires rotating weeks with the rest of the ladies. You can pick up the linens at one Sunday Mass and return them the next.
The linens should first be washed with warm water that is poured into the ground and then they can be washed like any others. This is as close as we come to Mary washing the garments of Jesus, present Body and Blood.
If interested, please contact Marie Khiel at [email protected] or 301-622-2784.
America Needs Fatima - October 16 at Noon
We invite everyone to come and join us on the front lawn of St. John the Baptist by the fence at New Hampshire Avenue to pray a Rosary for America at Noon, Saturday, October 16. This is the closest Saturday to October 13 the date of the last apparition of Our Lady of Fatima and the Miracle of the Sun in 1917. The goal is 20,000 rosaries across the nation. Let's do our part!

St. John the Baptist Haiti Sister Parish
“Fall is our annual fund drive for our Sister Parish in Baradères, Haiti. The funds raised are used to pay teacher salaries and provide a hot lunch for the students in our elementary schools and the only catholic high school in Baradères.
As many of you know the earthquake on August 14, 2021, destroyed the church, 8 elementary schools, over 2,500 family homes and severely damaged the rectory, high school and other elementary schools. The Department of Education for the region closed schools for now with a
proposed opening date of October 6, 2021. There is no clean drinking water and food is very scarce. Despite this disaster, the people of Baradères are very resilient. Fr. Noemi has started working on the reconstruction of the rectory and the high school, but they need financial assistance.
Some of you may remember Fr. Chandeleur Bélanston, who graduated in 2007 from Collège St. Jean Baptiste, the high school in our Sister Parish in Baradères, Haiti. Fr. Chandeleur visited our own parish in October 2014 and October 2017 (the year he was ordained) to meet us and speak to us. Without your aid and support, Fr. Chandeleur would probably not have become a priest, as there was no adequate high school in Baradères.
We will hold our annual fall collection October 9 and 10. 100% of your donation goes directly to Baradères!
Every contribution helps, no matter how small or large. There are many convenient ways to give:
- Mail your contribution to the Parish Office and note for the Haiti Collection.
- Bring your donation to Mass on Sunday and put it into the special basket at the back of church. Mark the envelope or check for the Haiti collection.
- Drop it off in the Kazista Center (Parish Office) Monday through Thursday.
- Use the link to Faith Direct
https://membership.faithdirect.net/givenow/MD300/19724
- Scan the QR code to the right to make a one-time contribution for our Haiti Sister Parish.

Mystical Word
written by L.J. Milone, Director of Faith Formation, [email protected]
A brother came to see Abba Macarius the Egyptian, and said to him, “Abba, give me a word that I may be saved.”
So, the old man said, “Go to the cemetery and abuse the dead.”
The brother went there, abused them, and threw stones at them;
then he returned and told the old man about it. The latter said to him, “Didn’t they say anything to
you?” He replied, “No.” The old man said, “Go back tomorrow and praise them.” So, the brother went away and praised them, calling them, “Apostles, saints, and righteous men.” He returned to the old man and said to him. “I have complimented them.”
And the old man said to him, “Did they not answer you?” The brother said no. The old man said to him,
“You know how you insulted them and they did not reply, and how you praised them, and they did not speak;
so you too if you wish to be saved must do the same and become a dead man. Like the dead, take no account of either the scorn of men or their praises, and you can be saved.” In the
nothingness of the desert, the winds of public opinion matter not at all. The crowds’ admiration or hatred have no effect because the desert contemplative seeks to become dead: a no one, a nobody. The ammas and abbas ignored what people thought; they gave no attention to their opinions. They only desired to remain in the state of the desert – the state of interior silence – to be with, within, one with God.
Theophilus, the archbishop, came to Scetis one day. The brethren who were assembled said to Abba Pambo, “Say
something to the archbishop, so that he may be edified.” The old man said to them, “If he is not edified by my silence, he will not be edified by my speech.” Silence is the sphere and language of God. Another story may help. A busy corporate lawyer complained to a hermit that he was too busy to pray for even five minutes. The hermit sat in silence for a while.
The lawyer started to get impatient, and then downright angry that the hermit wasn’t replying. He had a meeting scheduled in a few minutes. Time is money, after all!
Seeing that the hermit was not responding, the lawyer starts berating him. Insults and profanities fly out of the lawyer’s mouth. Through it all, the hermit remains calm, eyes closed, silent, and smiling. Eventually, the lawyer notices the hermit’s smile and stops his fury. He sits down
and closes his eyes. After a few moments, he becomes silent within. Then, miracle of miracles, he smiles, too.
As the poet Edmond Jabes says: “YOU do not go into the desert to find identity but to lose it, to lose your personality, to become anonymous. You make yourself
void. YOU become silence. It is very hard to live with silence. The real silence is death and this is terrible. It is very hard in the desert. You must become more silent than the silence around you.
And then something extraordinary happens: you hear silence speak.”
Amma Syncletica said,
“There are many who live in the mountains and behave as if they were in town, and they are wasting their time. It is possible to be a solitary in one’s mind while living in a crowd, and it is possible for one who is a solitary to live in the crowd of his own thoughts.” Here is an opening for us, that is, for how we can not only learn from but attempt to practice the wisdom of the desert. For, the stripping, merciful silence of the desert is not restricted to hermits living in the physical wilderness. We can abide in the desert even amid crowds and the bustle of the marketplace.
One of the fathers said: Just as it is impossible to see your face in troubled water, so also the soul, unless it is clear of alien thoughts, is not able to pray to God in contemplation.
Spiritual clarity is emptying the mind of all thinking, of all attachment-thoughts, especially. The desert provided clarity regarding the world. One could see the
conventional ways of thinking, the attachments, and the injustices of civilization from the extreme marginality of the desert.
Abba Isaiah said, "one living in stillness needs three things: to fear God without ceasing, to pray with constancy, and never to release one's heart from the memory of God." Here is the preeminent call of the desert: to keep in mind nothing but God! “Fearing God” means awe and acceptance of the divine mystery. Praying constantly means the continual return of mind and heart to the Presence, abiding in Nihil.
The goal is for the desert seeker never to release the heart from the memory of God, dropping into the divine nothing all through the day.
If you ever have any comments regarding Mystical Word, you are most welcome to contact L. J. Milone.
Nihil Sessions
This is a contemplative, nondual, wholistic, mystically oriented, and ongoing series on the essentials of Catholic faith and spirituality led by L.J. Milone. Come for an entirely different way of talking about God, faith, and spirituality.
The word “nihil” means “nothing” and reflects the core goals of these sessions: to follow Jesus along the way of the cross or the way of nothingness, to encounter the God who is no-thing, incomprehensible mystery, to affirm and explore the self-emptying love of God in the core teachings of Catholicism, to explore and apply the path of letting go to our lives, to discover the power and healing of silence, and to delve
into the many mystical spiritualities in the Catholic tradition.
In these sessions you will be challenged to grow spiritually, to appreciate the life-changing truths of our faith, and to open yourself ever more to the Infinite Spirit of God.
Each session ends with silent meditation.
Tuesday nights, 7:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.
