ENERGY EFFICIENCY

Energy costs are rising like never before as resources become scarce. Heating both your home and water uses the bulk of your energy. Effi cient ways of heating, insulating and even passive solar energy will become increasingly important to energy conscious clients.

SPACE MANAGEMENT

Changes to lifestyle and increasing construction costs mean space management is now an essential consideration in the design process. Good use of available space can mean that a similar lifestyle can be achieved from smaller areas and hence savings on construction costs.

By using Villaboard® Lining to line your wet areas,

you’ll save space. Villaboard® Lining is 6mm thick

while other alternative linings are 9mm thick.

LIFE CYCLE COSTING

More expensive materials with a longer life can often work out to be a more cost effective option than low costs, short life alternatives.

James Hardie internal linings come with a 15 year product warranty, are resistant to the damage from moisture, rotting and fi re when installed correctly meaning you won’t be up for costly repairs.

SOUND CONTROL

With sections becoming smaller and homes consequently being built closer, children staying at home for longer, more TV’s and sound systems in the home noise pollution has become an issue. Double glazing systems, wall linings and sound insulation systems are all relatively simple to install at the time of construction producing good results. Using James Hardie internal linings, better acoustic performance can be achieved by selecting the appropriate thickness of lining to get the required STL (Sound Transmission Loss).

BUILDING TODAY WITH THE FUTURE IN MIND

Future-proof building is the next consumer driven initiative that builders, designers and developers will need to embrace if they wish to deliver a sustainable product that their client wants. It means incorporating features that may seem cutting edge today but will become standard features in the future.

So how does it all work?

Eight sections or icons to do with the design and construction phase have been developed by Construction Marketing Services (CMS). Each one of these has considerations and best practise scenarios that in many cases will be beyond the minimum required under the Building Act or may not even be a consideration. But, they all will deliver benefi ts in some way to the home owner.

(5)

QUALITY ASSURANCE

The building industry is expected to become more focused on quality assurance as homeowners look for guarantees and warranties to protect their investments.

James Hardie products are manufactured to ISO standards which ensures the best quality for your peace of mind.

RESOURCE RESPONSIBILITY

We need to promote the use of environmentally friendly products, recycled materials and renewable resources in order to make effi cient use of our limited resources.

In a continued effort to be environmentally friendly, James Hardie recycles the raw materials and water used in the manufacture of fi bre cement products.

SECURITY AND AUTOMATION

Home automation is a valid way to future-proof your home and will increase quality of life as well as improving home security. From the simple remote garage door to a fully integrated computer system for lighting, entertainment and security.

HEALTH AND SAFETY

Many common health problems can be kept at bay by incorporating future-proofed materials and systems into new homes. Effi cient systems for keeping the home warm, dry and well ventilated along with the use of non-toxic building materials will enhance the living conditions.

James Hardie linings used for structural bracing provide you a safe house and it also helps keep your home dry. When compared to other lining alternatives, James Hardie products absorb less moisture meaning the product dries a lot quicker.

WHAT LIES

BENEATH

YOUR WALLS WILL BE THE BACKDROP TO

YOUR LIFE... THEY CAN BE A FEATURE IN

THEIR OWN RIGHT, OR A BLANK CANVAS.

THEY CAN SAY ‘TRADITIONAL’ OR

‘CONTEMPORARY’ OR NOTHING

MUCH AT ALL.

When you think about how many years you will live within your walls it makes sense to choose colours and fi nishes carefully. But that’s not the end of the story. If you want your walls to stay looking beautiful it’s even more important to consider how they’ll stand the test of time; children in a hurry, bikes peddled down the hallway, knocks from furniture that didn’t quite make it through the doorway — not to mention leaking pipes and overfl owing washing machines.

It pays to think very carefully about what’s going on under the surface. You want to select products based on durability and stability. Products that will stand the test of time and continue to look good. That’s why leading architects and builders specify and use James Hardie internal linings.

(7)

WATER, WATER EVERYWHERE...

Before you sink into that deep bubble bath, it pays to consider what’s going on behind the walls — not just in the bathroom, but also in laundries, toilets and kitchens. Wherever there’s water there’s potential for moisture or water damage — rotting walls and shower linings, walls that swell and shift, tiles that fail, even structural damage. That’s expensive with a double $.

Once the most functional of rooms, today the bathroom has become one of the most luxurious and the most expensive. Without adequate water protection your investment is at risk.

Don’t make the mistake of thinking ‘out of sight, out of mind’. If you’re spending a small fortune on tiling and bathroom fi ttings, it doesn’t make sense to compromise on what goes behind them.

James Hardie offer a range of wet area linings you can rely on — especially when concerned about a leaking shower, overfl owing bath, or washing machine. Made from fi bre cement, they are resistant to miosture and rotting and offer superior durability to the plasterboard alternative.

LIFE’S HARD KNOCKS

Certain areas of your home will always be prone to heavy traffi c and hard knocks. Hallways, stairs, rumpus rooms and garages have to stand up to a lot, so it makes sense to line them with impact resistant materials and avoid the cost of repairs further down the track.

HardiGroove® Lining and Villaboard® Lining are ideal wall

linings for these areas, and work well in combination, with HardiGroove® Lining used to dado height and Villaboard®

Lining above.

GREAT LOOKS

Of course, durability isn’t the only consideration. Wall surfaces need to refl ect your own unique style, particularly with feature walls, entrance ways and hallways, where fi rst impressions count.

James Hardie have created a range of wall linings that can be used to create any look, from the traditional tongue and groove panel look of HardiGroove® Lining, to the crisp,

contemporary looks that can be created with Villaboard®

Lining. HardiGroove® Lining can also be used very

successfully on ceilings — particularly to create feature ceilings in entrance ways and stairwells.

THINGS TO CONSIDER

■ Double showers with dual showerheads to cope with the early-morning rush.

■ Good ventilation so that mirrors don’t fog up and mould is discouraged.

Twin basins and plenty of mirror space.Good task lighting for make up and shaving

and low-key ambient lighting for creating a relaxing mood in the evening.

■ Good natural light — consider a skylight, or windows or doors out onto a private outdoor area.

■ A deep inviting bath with provision for candles.

Built-in speakers for relaxing music.Plenty of storage space.

An ensuite can be designed to fi t into a 900mm wide

space, extending 500mm into the bedroom.

■ Water-heating capacity. If adding a second bathroom or ensuite, think about a continuous fl ow gas water heater mounted on the exterior of your home.

MODERN COLONIAL

This style is ideal for restored villas, or traditionally styled new homes. Today’s high-spec, colonial style fi ttings let you create the charm without sacrifi cing comfort.

LOOK FOR:

Refi nished and restored claw foot baths. Heritage style taps and basins.

Oversized brass shower heads.

Tiled walls over Villaboard® Lining with

feature borders.

Traditional tongue and groove look walls — either

to dado height or full ceiling. Easily achieved with

HardiGroove® Lining.

CHOOSING YOUR STYLE...

MINIMALIST/MODERN

This is a great approach for smaller bathrooms — reducing all the elements to the bare minimum creates a zen-like ambiance.

Keep colour to a minimum. White, neutral colours

and pale greens are restful.

Tiling the fl oor and walls in the same colour will

throw more emphasis onto fi ttings and lighting effects.

White HardiGlaze® Lining with aluminium jointers

creates a very clean, minimal look, without huge expense.

SPA RESORT STYLE

Today’s top bathrooms rival those in top spas and resorts. There’s no limit to what can be achieved. But remember to be just as careful about choosing what goes under your walls, fl oor and bath surrounds, as you are about choosing the fi ttings.

Make the bath the hero. Deep, luxurious, with

multiple jets and tiled step-up or step-down surrounds.

Make sure you protect the bath surround from water

damage with James Hardie’s substrate products.

Bring the outdoors in. Plan a private courtyard or

BATHROOM

DO UP

A NEW LOOK

Starting with a water damaged bathroom (below) it’s hard to believe that this renovated version is the same room. A classic example of the damage that can be caused when wet and semi-wet areas aren’t suffi ciently waterproofed at the building stage, the old bathroom was not only mouldy, the walls and fl oors had suffered structural damage. To fi x the problem — and ensure it didn’t re-occur in the

renovated bathroom — the builders chose to line the walls with James Hardie Villaboard® Lining, and for the fl oors,

installed Hardipanel® Compressed Sheets beneath the

brand new white mosaic tiles.

Future-proofed homes use quality materials. James Hardie fi bre cement products are resistant to damage from moisture, rotting, cracking and fi re. For your peace of mind make sure you demand products that have been BRANZ appraised and have been manufactured to ISO standards.

(11)

Combine your grand entranceway with

HardiGroove® Lining and you get a look that

says "This home has distinction!".

■ Create indoor/outdoor fl ow with HardiGroove®

Lining on your soffi ts, such as over your front door and outdoor living area.

■ It’s also important to consider the ceiling material you use in wet areas. In bathrooms, ceilings are one of the fi rst places to show signs of moisture damage. Villaboard® Lining

should be used here to avoid any potential problems in the future.

STAND OUT

CEILINGS

Ceilings can make a real statement about your home, such as a grand entranceway with a high ceiling to create a real sense of space. Make your statement with HardiGroove® Lining in your ceilings.

WHAT GOES UNDER

FLOOR TILES IS AS IMPORTANT

AS WHAT GOES ON TOP

Tile and Slate Underlay and Ezi-Grid® Tile

Underlay have been designed to protect the fi nished tile fl oor from movements that occur naturally in timber, particle board or

plywood fl oors.

James Hardie underlays are suitable to be used under showers in wet areas, semi-wet and dry areas. They are ‘out of sight’ products that are nevertheless very important to achieve a perfect result.

THE LOOK

■ You are only limited by the range of tiles available. For bathrooms, create a walk in shower where the tiles continue from

bathroom fl oor to shower fl oor with no seams.

WHY TILE AND SLATE UNDERLAY?

To minimise movement which can cause

tile cracking.

Resistant to permanent water damage when

installed as directed.

Larger board size to match the trend to bigger

bathrooms and more tiled fl oor area elsewhere in the home.

WHY EZI-GRID

®

TILE UNDERLAY?

■ Offers all of the advantages above, but is even easier to install.

■ Ideal for DIY. Its grid of shallow embossed v-shaped grooves mean that only one or two scoring actions are required to achieve a clean reliable cut when the sheet is snapped up.
