Important:

These instructions describe in detail how to install Magellan 6.

For the initial installation please follow the instructions in the proceeding section “Initial installation of Magellan 6”. If you would like to update from Magellan 5 to Magellan 6 please read through „ Update from Magellan 5 to Magellan 6 “.

Initial installation of Magellan 6

This section describes the individual steps installing Magellan 6. Please take note of the system requirements in the „Magellan 6 Liesmich.txt“: ftp://ftp.stueber.de/pub/bin/de/magellan/v6/magellan6.liesmich.txt  Installation of Firebird  Installation of Magellan  Server installation  Client installation  Single-user installation

(2)

Install Firebird 2.5

Download the Firebird installer via the following link:

ftp://ftp.stueber.de/pub/bin/de/magellan/v6/Firebird-2.5.2.26540_0_Win32.exe

Double click the file „Firebird-2.5.2.26540_0_Win32.exe“ to begin the installation.

The default components of the first wizard options do not need to be changed. Please select “Weiter” to continue.

On the proceeding prompt tick the box “Die Firebird Client-Bibliothek ins Systemverzeichnis kopieren“.

Important:

Firebird should only be installed on the computer that the database will be saved on. That could be either a server or standalone PC.

Installation of Magellan 6

For installing Magellan 6 please procede as follows:

Download the Magellan installer from our website or under the following link:

ftp://ftp.stueber.de/pub/bin/de/magellan/v6/magellan6.msi

Double click the „Magellan6.msi“ installer.

(3)

Click „Weiter“.

You must now select the installation group:

Server: The database server and all other modules are installed on the server. As a rule this is where the Magellan 6 database will be found. The clients that access the server are installed via the option „Arbeitsplatz“.

Einzelplatz (Single-user): The database server and all other modules are installed on the server. It is equivalent to the server installation in the network and is therefore selected via the same option.

Arbeitsplatz (Workstation): This will install a workgroup in the network. Only the application files and database client will be installed but not the database, reports or scripts. An “Arbeitsplatz“ installation requires a server. Firebird must not be installed on this workstation.

Select the desired option group. Further information on these option definitions can be found under the headings „Server installation“, „Workstation installation“ und „Single-user installation”.

Important:

The installation of the database server (Firebird) is required for the server and single-user installation groups.

Server installation

After you have selected the „Server bzw. Einzelplatz“ installation group the setup wizard will be ready to install the files. The installation itself must be done on the server.

(4)

In the image below the paths of the data folders are displayed. Normally these parameters are correct but please check them. Should either Skripte (scripts), Berichte (reports), Dokumente (documents) etc be wrong please amend where necessary.

Important:

If you wish select an alternative path other than the specified one please specify it in this window. A service update al-ways uses the same paths which are specified during the installation. This can only be changed by rerunning the instal-lation.

Confirm by selecting „Weiter“.

Click on „Starten“ to complete the welcome assistant and launch Magellan for the first time.

Important:

In order to protect your school’s management data please consider updating the administrator password before Ma-gellan goes live. You can do this using the MaMa-gellan 6 Administrator under „Datenbank|Administrator-Kennwort“.

(10)

You would like to set up multiple workstations?

Magellan must be individually installed on each computer. But it is enough to run through the steps in the welcome assis-tant once for the server computer and once for the workstation.

For any further workstations the options used earlier in the welcome assistant can be applied. To do so, set up the workstation and test the Magellan login. Does that work?

Then log into Magellan as “sysdba” and open the option Hilfe -> Systeminformationen. There you be displayed the path to the Magellan.evm. Select the line then click the “Dateiverzeichnis öffnen“ button.

Copy the following files out of the directory that opens:

 Magellan.evm (contains the paths to the database and the data folders on your server computer)

 Magellan.lic (contains the license info)

 Magellan.opt (contains the options data for e.g. your Bundesland entry)

Launch the Magellan installer on each other workstation and then insert the files on the computers again. Please be aware that the storage paths vary between operating systems:

Vista:

C:\Program Data\Stueber Software\Magellan 6 XP:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Stueber Software\Magellan 6 Windows 2000:

C:\ Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Stueber Software\Magellan 6 Windows 7:

C:\Program Data\Stueber Software\Magellan 6 Windows Server 2008:

C:\Program Data\Stueber Software\Magellan 6 Windows 8:

C:\Program Data\Stueber Software\Magellan 6 Important:

In order to protect your school’s management data please consider updating the administrator password before Ma-gellan goes live. You can do this using the MaMa-gellan 6 Administrator under „Datenbank|Administrator-Kennwort“.

Problems with the installation?

The initial registration doesn’t work? Possible causes could be:

Magellan fails to start on the server?

Is Firebird installed on the server but hasn’t started? In the control panel of your server under “Classic View” (or similar) you should find an icon for Firebird Database Manager (or similar). The settings should be as follows:

(11)

The path is possible incorrect. Start the Magellan-Administrator without a username or password.

From the menu on the left select Server-Verwaltung -> Verbindung verwalten -> Starten.

Under “Alias” select the connection e.g. “Magellan”, click “Bearbeiten” then select the „Datenbank“ tab.

Check that the path to the database is correct and ends with the name of the database as displayed below (Please note: The image below contains just an example path!).

Magellan fails to start on the workstation?

The path to the database is possible incorrect here as well. Start the Magellan-Administrator without a username or password.

(12)

Please check that the path to the database has been entered exactly as on the server. The difference in the connection is only in the „Protokoll“ and „Server“ fields.

In the “Protokoll” field “TCP/IP” should be selected. In the server field simply enter the name of the server or IP address. For the transfer of data Firebird uses port 3050. Occasional this port can be blocked by the Windows Firewall. Create an exception (Incoming and outgoing rule) for this port try it once more.

(13)

Update from Magellan 5 to Magellan 6

If you have already installed Magellan 5 and would like to update to Magellan 6 please use the following steps:

 In Magellan 5: Set the Administrator password back to „masterkey“

 In Magellan 5: Export the password data

 Uninstall Firebird 1.5

 Install Firebird 2.5

 Install Magellan 6

 Conversion of the Magellan 5 database

 Restore the password data from Magellan 5

 Parallel use of Magellan 5 und Magellan 6

 Uninstall Magellan 5

Export the password data from Magellan 5

If you have already been working with Magellan 5 you can export the passwords of the users to Magellan 6 using the Magellan 5 Administrator.

The passwords are encrypted in a seperate Firebird database with the name security.fdb (Firebird 1.5). The file is created during the installation of Firebird 1.5. Because Magellan 6 also uses a new version of Firebird the old password database must be converted. Otherwise all user access has to be manually reentered in Magellan 6.

The export of password data has been a requirement since Version 5.2.14 of Magellan. Please also be aware that the backup of the security.fdb file is not possible under Windows Vista.

Proceed as follows for the conversion:

1. Start the Magellan 5 Administrator on your server.

2. Please select „Datenbank|Administratorenkennwort“, change the password to „masterkey“ then confirm with „OK“. 3. Select the option „Benutzerverwaltung“ and check the column „Kennung“. Firebird doesn’t accept any identifiers

containing German umlauts. Should any umlauts be contained these must be replaced.

4. Please select „Datensicherung|Sicherungskopie erstellen“. In the field below please specify the following path and file path:

C:\Programs\Firebird\Firebird_1_5\security.fbk 5. Confirm with „OK“.

The data of the security.fdb file will be backed up to a new file security.fbk. This password data can be restored after the installation of Firebird 2 and Magellan 6 at a later stage. You can find a description in the section „Restore the password data from Magellan 5“.

Important:

- No umlauts are allowed in the user abbreviations. Please change them if any are present

- The security.fdb file cannot be backed up under Windows Vista or subsequent operating systems.

Uninstall Firebird 1.5

Magellan 6 requires a new version of the database management system with Firebird. Please uninstall the existing ver-sion 1.5 of Firebird. With the new Firebird 2 verver-sion it is possible to use Magellan 5 and Magellan 6 in parallel. The pro-gram versions do not however use the same database.

(14)

2. Open „Software“ (since Windows Vista „Programs and Features“) highlight „Firebird 1.5“ and select Re-move/Uninstall.

To find out which settings to choose for Magellan 5 in order to also be able to use it with Firebird 2 take a look at the heading „Paralleler Betrieb von Magellan 5 und Magellan 6“.

Install Firebird 2.5

1. Download the Firebird installer via the following link:

ftp://ftp.stueber.de/pub/bin/de/magellan/v6/Firebird-2.5.2.26540_0_Win32.exe

2. Double click the file „Firebird-2.5.2.26540_0_Win32.exe“ to begin the installation. 3. Please accept the default options by clicking “Weiter”.

Please apply the illustrated options.

1. On the „Zusätzliche Aufgaben auswählen“ prompt please select the options and tick the box „Die Firebird Client-Bibliothek ins Systemverzeichnis kopieren“.

Please tick the box displayed above.

Important:

Firebird should only be installed on the computer that the database will be saved on. That could be either a server or standalone PC.

Install Magellan 6

(15)

Conversion of the Magellan 5 database

In order to continue using your Magellan 5 database in Magellan 6 please procede as follows:

1. Copy your Magellan 5 database (standard file name „Magellan5.fdb“) and insert it into the database path of your Magellan 6 installation. On your server these are by default:

Vista:

C:\Users\Public\Documents\Magellan 6\Datenbank XP:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Stueber Software\Datenbank Windows 2000:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\Stueber Software\Datenbank Windows 7:

C:\Users\Public\Documents\Stueber Software\Magellan 6\Datenbank Windows Server2000:

C:\Program Data\Documents\Stueber Software\Magellan 6\Datenbank

The paths are examples of the German operating systems and vary depending on the language or version of the op-erating system.

2. After the installation in the same folder there is by default the example database from Magellen 6 with the file name „Magellan6.fdb”. Please rename this database, for example to “Magellan6Beispiel.fdb”.

3. Now rename your Magellan 5 database „Magellan5.fdb“ to “Magellan6.fdb”.

4. When launching Magellan 6 for the first time the Magellan6.fdb file a wizard will assist in converting the database. 5. When Magellan 6 initially start log in as Administrator using the username „sysdba“ and password „masterkey“.It will

start a wizard for the database structural customisation.

Click „Weiter“.

(16)

The wizard will update the database structure. Magellan 6 will then open.

Restore the password data from Magellan 5

So that the users of Magellan 6 can use the same passwords as they did under Magellan 5, the created file “securi-ty.fbk” with the passwords from Magellan 5 must be imported under „Export der Kennwortdaten aus Magellan 5“.

Important The Administrator password of the new Magellan6 installation must remain set or reset to „masterkey“. You can configure this setting in Magellan6::Administrator under „Datenbank|Administratoren-Kennwort“. Your old Administrator password from the v5 database can be specified later during the conversion´. 1. On your server open the Magellan 6 Administrator with the username „sysdba” and password “masterkey” and select

„Ansicht|Datenbankpflege“.

2. Choose „Firebird 1.5 Sicherheitsdatenbank konvertieren“.

3. In the above „Datenbank“ field specify the location of created Magellan 5 Administrator backup copy of the securi-ty.fdb file. By default the path to the Firebird1.5 directory will be specified. If the expected security_backup.fbk isn’t available the path will be displayed in rot.

4. In the password field underneath please enter „masterkey“. Then click on „Starten“. The wizard will restore the back-up copy in the new format and sets the password database to the following path: C:\Program

(17)

5. After successfully converting the database close the Administrator and then please log yourself in as Administrator using the password „masterkey“.

6. Finally, synchronise the access rights. You can find this option in the Magellan 6 Administrator under „Daten-bankpflege|Datenbank überprüfen|Zugriffsrechte synchronisieren“

7. Afterwards you can change the Administrator password again under “Administrator|Datenbank|Administratoren-Kennwort”. All users will be able to log in using their regular password.

Parallel use of Magellan 5 und Magellan 6

After installing Magellan 6 this version can also be set to run in parallel with Magellan 5 in order to test run Magellan 6 initially.

So that Magellan 5 is also functional with Firebird 2 you will possibly need to adjust your database connection(s) in the Magellan 5 Administrator:

1. Open the Magellan 5 Administrator and select „Ansicht|Serververwaltung“. 2. Choose „Verbindung verwalten“

3. For each of the listed connections please make the following checks: Highlight the connection and select „Bearbeit-en“.

On the „Datenbank“ tab check the setting under „Protokoll”. If „Lokal“ is displayed under „Protokoll“ please change the setting in the „TCP/IP“ protokoll and enter „localhost“. If “TCP/IP“ is displayed under „Protokoll“ you do not need to change anything.

Update from Firebird 2.1 to Firebird 2.5

Up to version 6.0.68 Magellan has been provided with Firebird 2.1. Since version 6.0.69 and Firebird 2.5 Magellan 6 requires a new version of the database management system.

If you have already installed Magellan 6 up to version 6.0.68 and would like to update to Magellan 6.0.69 or higher, please proceed with the following steps:

1. Update Magellan 6 to version 6.0.69 or higher. You can download the latest version of Magellan under:

ftp://ftp.stueber.de/pub/bin/de/magellan/v6/magellan6.msi

Please also read the information in our read me file:

ftp://ftp.stueber.de/pub/bin/de/magellan/v6/magellan6.liesmich.txt

2. Select the option „Datenbankpflege|Datenbank überprüfen|Zugriffsrechte synchronisieren“ in Magellan-Administrator 3. Then within the Magellan-Administrator reset the Administrator password to „masterkey“. You can find the possibility

to do that under the option “Datenbank|Administratoren-Kennwort“.

4. To back up the password data under Firebird 2.1 please choose the option „Datensicherung|Sicherungskopie erstel-len|Starten“. Select „Firebird Sicherheitsdatenbank 2.1/2.5“ and specify a name and path for the backup in the field beneath.

The *.fbk extension will be automatically amended to the file.

If you would like to execute the backup of the security database in the program folder of the Firebird installation please choose the following paths:

32-Bit-Betriebssysteme: C:\Program Files\Firebird\Firebird_2_1 64-Bit Betriebssysteme: C:\Program Files (x86)\Firebird\Firebird_2_1

(18)

5. Please uninstall Firebird 2.1 (described under the header „Uninstall Firebird 1.5“ on page 11)

 Please install Firebird 2.5 (see under the header „Start Magellan after installation 6. Install Firebird 2.5“ on page 1).

7. In the Administrator open the option „Datenbankpflege|Firebird 1.5/Firebird 2.1 Sicherheitsdatenbank konvertieren“.

8. In the „Format“ field, select „Firebird 2.1 Sicherheitsdatenbank“. In the database field a path will be suggested. If the path is displayed in red that means no equivalent found could be found. Please browse to the backup created earlier, enter the password „masterkey“ and start the wizard. The wizard will copy the user data out of the Firebird 2.1 security database into the new Firebird 2.5 security database. Afterwards your users will be able to use their usual password to log into Magellan.
