lENTEN THOUGHTS

If you are still thinking about something to do special for Lent, why not consider sponsoring our Food Pantry or Thrift Shop with a donation to help those who are less fortunate than we. You can put a white envelope in the basket on the weekend and mark it “My Lenten Pledge” with your name. Thank your for your continued generosity to your parish family and those we serve in your name!

Today as we all know, we celebrate the First Sunday in the Season of Lent. For approximately the next 40 days, we willingly subject ourselves to acts of prayer, almsgiving and self-denial, because it is when we deny ourselves and during periods of time away from distractions, that our souls experience the greatest growth. We do this in imitation of Jesus' 40 days in the desert. If we are going to do that, we need to spend some time reflecting on how we can use these days to better prepare ourselves for His Glorious Resurrection at Easter.

Scripture certainly does not provide a lot of detail, so, I began thinking, what was Jesus' time in the desert surrounded by Satan and wild beasts, really like? I have my own theory that the devil constantly bombarded Jesus with words and thoughts about what His life would actually be like to test Jesus' faith. Knowing that Jesus was fully human and fully divine, Satan could hone in on Jesus' humanity to plant that seed of doubt, which is sometimes all that is needed to lead us to sin. Think about it – if you knew everything that would happen in your life, would you believe it? Do you ever spend time wishing you could go back in time and do things differently? That is us wanting to have full control so we can be God in our own life, rather than accept that everything we have experienced in life is what makes us who we are today.

I am sure the devil whispered to Jesus how He would start out with people following Him and really liking Him. After all, who in his right mind does not want to be liked? The crowds will grow to be thousands as they come to listen to His every word. He will be adored and trusted by countless followers. He will heal the sick, forgive sins and even bring the dead back to life. The goal of all of this is to have Jesus feel proud of all that He will accomplish in His life. Pride is a very deadly sin.

But then, when things are going really well, there will be those who will plan for His downfall. So even with all of those followers, there will be a stronger force that will destroy all that He's built up. This uprising will lead to not only those plotting against Him but even those closest to him will turn their backs on Him. People will lie about Him; they will deny knowing Him; they will run away and leave Him to die because the "truth" is they really DON'T like Him. I can hear the devil whispering into His ear these words of doubt, trying to destroy Jesus' trust in others.

Consequently, after all of the denials that will take place, He will be forced to suffer a terrible death during which He will be tortured beyond anything anyone could possibly endure, then left to die virtually alone. Jesus, are you sure this is really what you want? Constantly hearing the devil instill fear and cast doubts as Jesus tries to stay with the Spirit, who drove Him into this place, to begin with.

In 1939 the English artist Stanley Spencer created a beautiful painting as part of his Christ in the Wilderness

collection, in which he portrays Jesus in the desert with one of the wild beasts cupped in His hands. Rather than depict Jesus as holding a lion, cobra, or some other large deadly beast, he is holding a scorpion. In the painting, Jesus does not destroy the scorpion, but instead holds it gently in the palm of His hand as if to save it from the rest.

Much smaller than the other beasts but no less lethal, I imagine the scorpion as representing those small deadly sins we tend not to focus on – the ones the devil whispers in our ears telling us that it is small, so it does not matter. Those sins that creep into our lives oftentimes unnoticed but that are left unattended can inject a paralyzing venom into us and destroy our role as disciples of Christ. Those sins that Jesus takes from us in the Sacrament of Reconciliation so we can be free to continue our journey safely home.

After spending so much time in the desert, Jesus nonetheless emerges strengthened to begin His public ministry because what the devil would have left out is how, in the end, after suffering and dying, He will rise from the dead and be brought into the presence of His Heavenly Father. How through His death, He will rise to a new everlasting life and gain salvation for all!

Today we heard the story of Noah, and how after spending 40 days upon the ark, Noah and his family left behind a sinful world only to enter into a new life with God. A line from today's reflection in The Word Among Us states, "By vowing never again to destroy the earth in a flood, He (God) pointed toward a better way to overcome sin and evil: Jesus' death and Resurrection." We're reminded of the importance of the flood waters in the Rite of Baptism during the blessing over the Baptismal water, in which the priest or deacon prays: "The waters of the great flood you made a sign of the waters of Baptism, that make an end of sin and a new beginning of goodness. "Followed by the invocation: "We ask you, Father, with Your Son to send the Holy Spirit upon the water of this font. May all who are buried with Christ in the death of baptism rise also with Him to newness of life." In other words, it is through the waters of Baptism that we die to sin and rise just as Noah and his family did, to a new life with Christ.

Lent is time for our own desert experience. Even if we cannot head off to the Sahara for 40 days, we can all create a desert space in our busy lives by setting aside time to think about how we can: accept ourselves for who God made us to be; release pride and regain trust in the goodness of others; put aside fear that can paralyze us from doing God's work; and identify and confess those "scorpion" sins that destroy us a little bit at a time. These next 40 days are set aside, so we have time to rediscover who we are before God and say “yes” to Him and “no” to Satan, as Jesus did.

And so, my friends, ready or not, welcome to Lent! Welcome to the desert!

Our Lenten journey

LENTEN TRIVIA continued

Days of Abstinence: No meat may be eaten on Ash

Wednesday, all Fridays in Lent and Good Friday for all those who are 14 years or older. (This does not end at

age 60).

Days of Fast: A limit of one full meatless meal on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday (for all who are 18-60

years old).

Weekdays of Lent: There is no obligation to fast. However, voluntary acts of self-denial are always a great way to be more involved during Lent.

Easter Duty Obligation: Every Catholic must receive Holy Communion and go to confession between the First Sunday in Lent and Trinity Sunday.

Acts of Devotion: are encouraged on a voluntary basis. These may include spiritual study, Lenten Devotions, the Rosary, Stations of the Cross and deeds of mercy and kindness. Of course, the greatest prayer and to receive the greatest fruits of the Lenten season is by participating in daily and Sunday Masses.

Eucharistic Fast: You should fast one hour from foods and liquids. (Water and medicine are exceptions

to this fast).

Here is some Lenten Trivia

to test your knowledge
