MERCY CORNER
O my Jesus, each of Your saints reflects
one of Your virtues; I desire to reflect
Your compassionate Heart, full of mercy;
I want to glorify it. Let Your mercy, O
Jesus, be impressed upon my heart and
soul like a seal, and this will be my badge
in this and the future life. Glorifying
Your mercy is the exclusive task of my
life. (Diary, 1242).
God’s greatness does not frighten me,
but makes me happy. By giving Him
glory, I myself am lifted up. On seeing
His happiness, I myself am made happy,
because all that is in Him flows back
upon me. (Diary, 1246).
One Day At A Time
Waking up this morning, I smile.
Twenty-four brand new hours are before me. I
vow to live fully in each moment and to
look at all beings with eyes of
compas-sion.

16th Sunday in Ordinary Time
Theme: Hospitality - We welcome Jesus in our lives. Breaking Open the Word
Suggested text for faith sharing: Today’s Gospel Step One: Listen to the Word
As you hear this reading, what words or phrases strike you? What in this reading touches your heart? What lingers in your memory?
Step Two: Look into Your Life
Question for Children: Name a time when you shared what you had with a friend, or a classmate at school. Question for Youth: Martha chose to serve, Mary chose to sit at Jesus' feet and listen to Him. Of those two ac-tions, service or prayer, which do you feel more com-fortable with? Why?
Question for Adults: The Gospel today invites us to serve and to be hospitable. When did you welcome Je-sus into your home through the presence of a neighbor or a stranger?
July 21, 2019 - 16th Sunday in Ordinary Time
“…I am a minister in accordance with God’s stewardship
given to me to bring to completion for you the word of
God.” (Colossians 1:25)
We are all called to evangelize – to continuously grow in
our relationship with Jesus and to share it with others. We
may not be called to evangelize like St. Paul, but we
should look for opportunities to share our faith with those
closest to us, like our family, friends and neighbors. Pray
for the courage to share your faith the next time the
op-portunity arises.

Weekly Reflection
July 21, 2019
Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Reflection by Rev. Leonard N. Peterson
One spring morning I visited the pastor, whom I help out, in his office where his dog was lounging on an over-sized towel. All of a sudden, for no apparent reason, the pooch stood and grabbed the towel and started twisting it into a spiral. Watching this, I just spurted out to the other human in the room that pooch’s behavior resembled my own on any given early morning. Pastor had a hearty laugh at that, but I was partly serious. In the midst of my morning preparations, I often find myself distractedly doing this or that instead of staying focused on getting dressed and ready-ing myself for prayer.
Nearly every self-help book, program, DVD, or podcast say the same thing as your counselor or your Aunt Louise, namely that “If you want to have a healthy lifestyle you have to set your pri-orities and stick with your decision.” Having the right pripri-orities will lead you to experience balance, happiness and peace. The wrong ones only produce the opposite. People today often com-plain about “running in circles” much of their time, with overly busy schedules and demands coming from all sides, not the least of which are those coming through their cellphones. Only when they choose to “stop and smell the roses” do they get a break. The familiar gospel story of the two sisters Martha and Mary is often analyzed as one wherein Martha wears the “black hat” and Mary the “white one.” If you note carefully, Our Lord never sets up this characterization. It’s as if He realizes that He is dealing with two future saints, which both ladies became. The crux of the matter for Him is that one must listen to His word as the top priority for every one of His followers. Mary knew this and act-ed on it.
True, Martha temporarily forgot this. If you’re anything like me, I can be guilty of forgetting too. Martha had to be reminded that all her legitimate concerns about properly hosting a visitor, while good in themselves, are second to hearing the Word of God. We all need reminders that our chosen priorities not be easily set aside. In fact, it’s precisely when a serious matter may be weighing us down that we need to listen to God’s voice more intently. We can’t always have a copy of the bible with us but God is always by our side. He “speaks” in a variety of ways and means.
Mary knew instinctively what to do when God was literally by her side that day when their Friend came calling. So she exer-cised a certain wisdom that only comes with a healthy set of pri-orities. But to her credit, we know her sister Martha also knew just who to turn to some time later when her brother Lazarus died. Who can fault her act of faith when she finally caught up with Jesus and simply said, “Lord, if you had been here my brother would not have died”?
When asked why he had been so successful, former Dallas Cow-boys coach Tom Landry responded to a crowd of more than two thousand students at Baylor University, “In 1958, I did some-thing everyone who has been successful must do. I determined my priorities for my life—God, family, and only then
foot-July 21, 2019 Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Saint of the Week
Camillus de Lellis, Soldier and Priest, 1550-1614Born into an aristocratic family at Bocchianico in the Abruzzi province of what is now Italy, he grew swiftly to be a big man--six feet man--six inches tall and similarly proportioned. When Camil-lus was seventeen, he went off with his father to fight with the Venetians against the Turks.
During this sojourn, Camillus became infected with a disease in his leg which was both painful to him and repulsive to others. This disease was to hound him for the remainder of his life. Admitted to the San Giacomo Hospital for the Incurables in Rome, Camillus developed a gambling habit. More than once, he lost everything he owned, including the shirt off his back, to gambling.
Discharged from the hospital, Camillus became a mercenary in order to earn his way. But often, gambling reduced him to want and a peace treaty between the Venetians and Turks took this livelihood away as well. Meanwhile the disease in his leg brought him back to San Giacomo. When his health improved, the hospital administrators gave Camillus menial jobs to do for a small pay, but gambling took most of his money from him. Finally having enough of his bad habits, the administrators fired Camillus and threw him out on the street.
One of the problems of the time in a hospital for incurables was that no one really wanted to be working there. Consequently, prisoners, the very poor, and those who somehow felt that they could take advantage of the sick were about the only people who were employed in the care of these unfortunates. Theft was common, and those near death were sometimes thrown into the burial pits with the dead bodies so that their belongings could be stolen.
During his lifetime, the congregation of Camillus de Lellis, known as the Ministers of the Sick (today called the Order of Hospitallers), opened several houses and hospitals for the care of the sick and wounded. His congregation also went along with troops who were fighting in Hungary and Croatia, thus estab-lishing the first "field hospitals."
God granted Camillus the power of prophecy and the gift of miracles. He also was known to have received personal revela-tion from God on many occasions. St. Camillus de Lellis was canonized in 1746 and declared the patron of hospitals, nurses, and of the sick. The health care professions honor this saint and celebrate his gifts to their field on this date.
Camillus’ message today: This saint r ecognized the slipper y
slope down which he was descending and, with the grace of God, turned himself around. God’s grace is available to every-one whether they need abundant help, as Camillus did, or just enough to keep them on the right path in their journey of faith.
Do you regularly ask for God’s grace or do you sometimes think that you can do it all on your own?

MISSION CO-OP:
JULY 27th—28th
THE CONGREGATION OF THE
BROTHERS OF THE SACRED
HEART OF JESUS, INDIA
The Brothers of the Sacred Heart of Jesus (SHJ) is
a religious brotherhood congregation, in India,
founded in 1903 by Rev.Fr. Adrian Caussanel SJ
with charism of "Good News to the poor in the love
of the Sacred Heart of Jesus". Today there are 220
professed religious brothers who carry out their
mis-sion in 20 Catholic dioceses of different states which
include Tamilnadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telengana,
Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh and Bihar. The
Congregation is currently under the leadership of
Rev. Br. M. Velankanni SHJ, having 46 religious
communities in different parts of India. The main
charism of the congregation is education to the poor,
besides social involvement, spiritual orientation and
human resource development. At present, the
con-gregation administers 76 formal schools, colleges,
child care centres and 34 Non-formal skills training
centres. Apart from education ministry, The
Congre-gation also engages in apostolic works of prison
ministry, hospital ministry and care for the dropout
children.
We are happy to inform that our congregation,
alt-hough brotherhood, is very much growing in India
due to their spiritual, social and economic
commit-ments and as a result, there is an invitation from
bishops to open catholic education centers in
differ-ent locations. The congregation reads the signs of
the time and responds accordingly, having a special
focus to educating the Dalit youth and Tribal children
in northern India. Unfortunately we don't have a
house in those areas. We appeal to your generosity
towards putting up a technical school for Maha
Da-lilts and tribal youth in the state of Bihar and a
boarding home for the dropout children from the
marginalized sections of the society. We assure you
that your kind and generous donations will be spent
for the above purposes. May God bless you and
your families for your noble gesture towards our
mis-sion in India. Thank you very much for supporting
our mission.

SIXTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME HOW TO MAKE THE RIGHT CHOICES IN LIFE
"Life is what you make it" because life is fundamentally the result of choices we make. There are many circumstances in life over which we have no control, but how we allow circumstances to affect us is also a matter of our own choos-ing; we make or break ourselves by the attitudes and per-ceptions we choose to maintain. Making choices among many good options is always easier if we are clear about our priorities. What really counts in life? What really matters? In the long run what better serves our development and happi-ness? On our deathbed, what will we repent not having done? If you, or someone you know would like to hear more about how our Catholic faith family helps us to an-swer those questions and set priorities in favor of enhanced living, we invite you to join us at an inquiry session. Inquiry sessions do not assume a commitment to join the Catholic faith family. Inquiry sessions are opportunities to ask ques-tions about god, Jesus, the Catholic faith family. All who are unbaptized, baptized into another faith denomination, or baptized Catholic but have not received Eucharist or Confirmation, are invited. Inquiry sessions are for those who wish to inquire, explore, and search for ways to grow in relationship with God.
