2. MAINTENANCE CONCEPT
A. The maintenance functions for the PT6
engines
described in this manual are dividedinto two basic
levels;
Line Maintenance andHeavy
Maintenance. The scope of Line Maintenance consists of the removal and installation of externalcomponents,
engine
accessories and Hot Section
Inspection.
Heavy
Maintenance detailsrepairs
normally
considered
beyond
thecapabilities
of the average line maintenanceshop.
The scope consists of the removal and installation ofengine
components
and limitedrepairs
to the hot section area, reductiongearbox
and accessorygearbox. Repairs beyond
thislevel are not recommended and should be
accomplished by
anapproved

PART 1 DESCRIPTION OF ENGINE SECTION 3 GENERAL INFORMATION
1. GENERAL
A. The
engines
describedthroughout
thispublication
are variants of the basic PT6powerplant
which is alightweight
free-turbineengine designed
for use in fixed orrotary-wing
aircraft. The PTGA seriesengines
for use infixed-wing
aircraft are available intwo
configurations:
the PT6A-6 which utilizes anon-reversing propeller
and thePT6A-6A, -6B, -6/C20,
-20,
-20A and -208which,
though essentially
similar,
areequipped
with additional features to
provide
control forreversing propeller applications.
B. Allengines
utilize twoindependent
turbines;
onedriving
a compressor in the gasgenerator section,
the seconddriving
reductiongearing
forpropeller,
orrotary-wing
operation. (See Figure 1-3-1)
C. Inlet air enters the
engine through
and annularplenum
chamber formedby
thecompressor inlet case. From there it is directed to the compressor. The compressor consists of three axial
stages
and onecentrifugal
stage
assembled as anintegral
unit,
which
provides
acompression
ratio of 6.3:1.D. A row of statervanes, located between each
stage
ofcompression,
diffuses theair,
raises its static pressure and directs it to the next
stage
ofcompression.
Thecompressed
air ispassed through
diffuserpipes,
turnedninety
degrees
indirection,
then ledthrough straightening
vanes to the combustion chamber.(See Figure 1-3-2)
E. The combustion chamber liner located in the gas
generator
case consists of an annularreverse flow weldment with
varying
sizeperforations
whichprovide
anentry
for thecompressed
air. The flow of airchanges
direction to enter the combustion chamber liner where it reverses direction and mixes with fuel. The location of the combustionchamber liner eliminates the need for a
long
shaft between the compressorand theturbine,
thusreducing
the overalllength
andweight
of theengine.
F Fuel is
injected
into the combustion chamber linerby
14simplex
nozzlessupplied
by
a common manifold. The fuel/air mixture isignited by
twoglow
plugs
(Pre-SB1429)
orspark igniters (Post-SB1429)
whichprotrude
into the combustion chamber liner. The resultant gasesexpand
from the combustion chamberliner,
reverse direction and passthrough
the turbineguide
vanes to the compressor turbine. The turbineguide
vanes ensure that theexpanding
gasesimpinge
on the turbine blades at the correctangle,
with minimum loss of energy. The stillexpanding
gases pass forwardthrough
a second set ofstationary guide
vanesto drive the power turbine.G. The compressor and power turbines are located in the
approximate
centerof theengine
with their shafts
extending
inopposite
directions. Thisprovides
forsimplified
installationand
inspection procedures.
The exhaust gas from the power turbine is directedPRATT

engine
with the relevant accessorydrives and
mounting
pads.
The accessories are driven from the compressorby
meansof a
coupling
shaft which extends the drivethrough
a conical tube in the oil tankcenter-section. An
integral
oil tankwith acapacity
of 2.3 U.S.gallons (1.92 Imperial
gallons:
8.70liters)
isprovided
in the compressor inlet case.i. A
planetary gearbox
located in the front of theengine, provides
thespeed
reduction between the powerturbine and thepropeller
shaft(PTGA

The PTGAseries
engines
have a twostage
planetary gearbox. Engine
