10 steps to replicate development
empowerment medium in developing
countries
RTPD project
What is RTPD?
RTPD stands for:
• Red de Talleres de Producción Digital in (Spanish) • Digital Content Produc=on Workshop Network (English) RTPD is an NGO‐driven project is empowering local Mexican NGOs, Community Based Organiza=ons (CBOs) and academic ins=tu=ons through the seOng up of educa1onal and cultural heritage mul1media content produc1on workshops that help them to strengthen their own local development impactHow to replicate RTPD?
Some basic ingredients are needed:
• Local organiza=ons that aim to solve key local (social, environmental, economic, cultural) issues • An energe=c, innova=ve and collabora=ve team that believes in g‐local development solu=ons • Access and willingness to create access to socially mo=vated experts in IT, mul=media design, educa=on and local ‘experts’Step 1. Meet locally ac1ve organiza1ons
There are amazing local organiza=ons that now what their community’s challenges are and spend all their efforts ac=vely figuring‐out solu=ons for their local issues … many of them rely on mul=media material to deliver effec=ve communica=on strategies, capacity building and campaigning But they commonly lack: • Infrastructure • Adequate tools to impact effec=vely their target audiences • Collabora=ve mechanisms with similar organiza=ons • Access to new informa=on and virtual communi=es • Basic know‐how in fund‐raising, management and marke=ngStep 2. Get basic equipment
You’ll need:
• Computers • Video devices • Photo devices • Audio devicesYou don’t need proprietary so\ware!!!
How?
• Fundraise • Second hand quality dona=onsStep 3. Install open‐source soIware
Any semi‐recent PC will smoothly run in Ubuntu
Just install the latest
• Open Office • Gimp • Scribus • Inkscape • Audacity • PLONE • CinelerraStep 4. Train your self and others
You must have a commided core team: • A mul=func=onal and socially oriented designer • Open‐source empowered IT guys • A mul=‐tasker administrator + ins=tu=onal development manager • A teacher, educa=onalist or instruc=onal designer • Socially commided enthusiasts Remember, every effort your team does in this project is meaningful so there are highly qualified volunteers everywhere Train, get trained by those your trained, learn and con=nue learning!!!Step 5. Guide instruc1onal designers
Instruc=onal design is “the arrangement of media and
content to help learners and teachers transfer
knowledge effec=vely”
(wikipedia)Introducing and using some of the tons of different
methodologies that exist is a enlightening experience
for those that aim to deliver the right content with the
right media to the right audience
Step 6. Support organiza1on sustainabilty
Any new ac=vity in an organiza=on makes it heavier
and requires
But also, changing moments are an opportunity to
rethink an organiza=on’s weaknesses and strengthen
them
Some useful advising topics:
• Fundraising training • Marke=ng and PR • Management efficiency • Strategic PlanningStep 7. Create collabora1on infrastructure
Having one organiza=on crea=ng wonderful
educa=onal mul=media content isn’t enough!
Maximum effec=veness and efficiency is met if all digital content producers can share experiences, learning, informa=on, elements (videos, photos, texts, templates, etc.) and finalized contents Some collabora=on means are: • Wikis • Shared and integrated databases • E‐mail & chatStep 8. Register everything under CC!
Only Crea=ve Commons (CC) protects and empowers
social development organiza=ons to:
• use other’s available mul=media elements to create locally relevant contents • iden=fy contents and adapt them to their • access and (re)use other’s solu=ons to social, environmental and economic problems CC establishes the legal framework that allows an organiza=on to share, collaborate and (re)create “locally relevant” educa=onalStep 9. Agree on feedback & evalua1on
Socially‐driven organiza=ons need to know that every
ac=on they do is having a relevant impact on their
mission and evolu=on
The RTPD model establishes an empowerment
structure that enables any organiza=on to enhance
their local impact through the right use of technology
and collabora=ve tools
Step 10. Publish all knowledge on the web
•RTPD is all about empowering local solu=ons
•Technology makes sharing solu=ons easy
•Crea=ve Commons protects everyone’s rights while
allowing the free sharing of educa=on and cultural
heritage mul=media elements
… so anyone in this world can access the educa=on and
cultural heritage content that has been done, and
con=nue the g‐locally crea=ve cycle …
