Patient Care Program
The goal of the Patient Care Program is to improve the experience and outcomes of patient care.
The Program has focused on improving care for patients for more than a decade. In 2004, the Foundation launched the Betty Irene Moore Nursing Initiative with the goals of addressing the nursing shortage and improving care in adult acute care hospitals in the San Francisco Bay Area and Greater Sacramento. The Foundation also launched the Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing at the University of California at Davis dedicated to educate, train and prepare nurse leaders in new care models that will enhance and advance overall health care for generations to come. Through the work of the
Foundation’s partners, preventable harms in local hospitals dropped significantly – from infections to medication errors – and readmission rates have decreased at the same time.
The success of this work led to the creation of the Patient Care Program in 2012, which extended the Foundation’s work nationally. With the goal of improving the experience and outcomes of patient care, the Patient Care Program has been working to redesign ICU care and to promote patient and family engagement.
Most recently, the Foundation launched three new areas of investigation into how it can improve the experience and outcomes of Patient Care. These include end-‐of-‐life care, goal-‐based care and the effective use of data and information technology.
