From the Principal
There are many different times in the year when parents are reminded of the significant challenges they face in raising children. This may be when they receive their child’s unfavourable semester report, or when their child shares a disappointment; missing out on a position of leadership or losing in a team final, or it might be when a child shares their anxiety about some social interaction that is troubling them.
In each of these cases one of the key factors contributing to the child’s difficulty in dealing with these disappointments is self-doubt. I have observed this same phenomenon in many different schools over time and have no hesitation in stating that self-doubt and lack of confidence holds more young people back than any other factor I have experienced in my thirty years as an educator.
A parent can send their child to a school such as Northholm but the choice of school alone won’t guarantee a child will be happy or that they will achieve. The critical factor will always be a child having confidence in their abilities. Real confidence-building is the most important skill you can bring to your role as a parent. Children with healthy self-esteem and self-confidence learn more, achieve more, have more friends and are generally happier than those with low levels of confidence.
I do admit however, that building a child’s self-confidence is not an easy task. It takes, time, commitment and considerable patience. Building a child’s self-confidence is not just a matter of heaping positive comments on
As parents and as educators we need to tackle children’s lack of confidence on a number of different fronts – that is, what they think...head, how they feel…heart and what they do…hands.
We need to:
Foster positive mindsets in young people and a real sense of optimism.
Help young people overcome their fears and anxieties so they can take more risks socially and academically.
Develop a lasting sense of independence and self-sufficiency so they can really start achieving.
ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
Thank you to Mrs Hooper, Ms Hastie, Ms Smith, Mrs Rudd, Mr Kinch and Mr Childs who accompanied our very excited Year Five and Year Six students on their excursions to Bathurst and Canberra…Quite a commitment in the middle of Winter!

On that note, the Higher School Certificate Music performances will be on the following week, Monday 25 August from 7.00pm in the Addison Centre for Performing Arts. Music One students have been polishing their solo performances and will present a range of repertoire from their chosen topics; these include Jazz, An Instrument and its Repertoire, Popular Music and Theatre Music. Again, family, friends and members of the Northholm Grammar School community are encouraged to come along and support the students. This is also an excellent opportunity for younger students who wish to pursue Music for their HSC to gain an understanding of the course requirements. Tea, coffee and light refreshments will be served.

Sport
The next few weeks are going to be extremely busy with a number of carnivals and gala days taking place. It is fantastic to see the students actively engaging in the wide variety of co-curricular opportunities that are available to them in sport. The Hills Zone Winter Competitions are getting close to their conclusion and we
noticeboard outside the Sports office to do so to see if they have been successful in being selected for this squad. A permission note regarding this carnival has gone home via e-mail and I ask that students return these promptly to the Sports department so that we are able to finalise the team. The HICES Athletics Carnival is also being held later this term and a permission note will be e-mailed students in this team by the end of the week. Students in Years Three to Six need to return their notes for the Northwest Basketball Challenge as soon as possible.

As a result of me having been on Year Six camp this week I have not been able to compile a list of reports on how our teams faired this week. I apologise for this and will ensure that next week’s edition contains as many reports highlighting the performances of our sporting teams as possible.
I encourage students and families to stay in close contact with dates and achievements via the Weekly Record and the Daysheet. If there are any questions about anything to do with the various competitions, please do not hesitate to contact the Sports Department directly.on 9656 2017.
