2015 - Year in Review

In 2015, Manitoba Women in Construction enjoyed its first full year in operation, building on its 2014 successes. The group worked

towards its mandate to “facilitate the long-term success of women in Manitoba’s construction industry by providing a resource for

support, mentoring, networking, community involvement and education” by hosting events, seminars and tours and by working to engage women within the construction industry.

MWC hosted nine events throughout 2015, including tradeshows, tours and networking, and professional development seminars. Enjoy this look back on the year that was, including our slate of events for 2016. MWC is committed to continuing to improve the representation and retention of women in the construction industry in 2016.

February - CSAM Safety Conference

Board Members Carla Larabie and Soo Lee represented MWC at the 2015 CSAM Safety Conference in February

Manitoba Women in Construction attended

its first ever CSAM The Safety Conference on February 3 & 4, 2015 at the RBC Convention Centre Winnipeg.

MWC representatives were on hand showing off their brand new booth and meeting with conference attendees - both men and women - to generate interest in the association. We gave away an Apple TV through a raffle sponsored by Concord Projects and promoted the opportunity to

become a MWC member.

February - Convention Centre Tour

and Networking event

Stuart Olsen was kind enough to give our members a tour of the upcoming expansion to the RBC Convention Centre Winnipeg. The expansion was in its early stages but our members enjoyed the opportunity to see the progress on one of Winnipeg’s most high-profile projects.

MWC hosted its first networking event of the year after the tour at the Convention Centre, enjoying refreshments and great company.

March - Working with Difficult

Colleagues Seminar

Genelle Macintyre from Partners in

Discovery presented this seminar in front of almost forty women in March. Her approach, filled with humour and insight, resonated greatly with attendees, who learned how to approach and deal with colleagues who can present challenges in the work place.

Thanks for the great presentation Genelle! You managed to help get our attendees responsive and engaged in a very helpful seminar.

May - Sparking Interest

In May, MWC joined 72 girls and teachers from River East School Division to help introduce the next generation of women in the workforce to the construction industry. A female plumber, pipefitter, electrician, carpenter and welder represented the industry and worked with the girls in their various areas of expertise.

Thanks to Concord Projects Ltd. for

co-sponsoring the event and providing goodie bags for the participants!

May

2nd Annual

MWC BBQ

More than 106 people, both men and women, came out to MWC’s second annual BBQ in Winnipeg Construction Association’s parking lot. The Red Ember food truck brought their local, wood-fired pizza for lunch where industry members had the chance to meet, mingle and enjoy a wonderful sunny spring day.

August - 62M Condos Tour

MWC had the chance to tour the

under-construction 62M Condos project in the summer. The group heard about how the project came to fruition, and about some interesting design features and constructability challenges of the building.

The tour sold out in less than a week and we’re looking forward to organizing a tour of the completed building in the new year.

September - Manitoba Legislature

Hermetic Tour

Registration for this hugely-popular tour sold out, and attendees raved about the inscriptions, Freemasonic symbols and hidden meanings behind the building’s architecture. Exploring all the hidden corners and passageways of one of Manitoba’s most intriguing structures was a real thrill for everyone who went.
