Your Target

At the end of this activity, you will gain competence in determining, understanding and accepting the learners’ diverse backgrounds; and in relating the learners’ background to their performance in the classroom.

Your Map

To reach your target, do the following task:

Observe two or more learners of different abilities but from the same grade or

year level.

Find out some information about their background. Observe them as they participate in a classroom activity Write a narrative

report and brief reflection on your

An Observation Guide for Individual Differences

Read the following carefully before you begin to observe.

1. Observe the class to see the differences in abilities of the learners.

2. Try to identify the students who seem to be performing well and

those that seem to be behind.

3. Validate your observations by asking the teacher about the

background (family, socio-economic, presence of some learning

disability, etc.) of these children.

4. Observed the behavior of both the high achieving and low achieving

learners. Note their dispositions, pace in accomplishing tasks,

interaction with teacher, and interaction with others.

5. Observe the teacher’s method in addressing the individual

learning needs of the students in his/her class.

An Observation Guide for Individual Differences

Learners have different skills and abilities. They possess their skills in areas they are good. Some of them are fast learners, while there are also slow learners that teacher tend to repeat the lesson in order for them to understand. High achievers in the class were the girls sitting in the front row while the low achievers are the boys sitting at the back. Those who are high achievers are serious in their studies. They participate actively in class discussions; they ask questions and eagerly listen to the response. They exert lots of effort in completing their task. Low achievers on the other hand are those who intentionally sit at the back so the teacher would not mind them not participating in class. If given any task their effort is just for mere compliance.

The teacher addresses the learning needs of the students through collaborative and interactive activities that interest them. The teacher also presents her lesson variedly he uses not just lectures or normal discussions but sometimes he call some students to explain what she/he understand about the subject matter. Most of the time the teacher tries to capture the attention of the students.

ANALYSIS

1. Did your observation match the information given by the teacher? Were you able to correctly identify who among the students performed well and who did not? What behavior helped you identify them?

My observation is parallel to the information I gathered from the teacher. I was able to correctly identify who among the students performed well and who did not because of the way they behave and interact in the class discussion. My observation was proven in their test results, the way they present their ideas and respond to the teacher’s direction. Those active learners aggressively participated in the discussion and raise their hand while the slow learners are quietly seating at the back.

2. Describe the differences in ability levels of the students in the class. Is there a wide gap between the students who are performing well and those that are not?

No, I don’t see it that way. There might be a gap between the learners but it is not because one is more intelligent than the other, but because sometimes other students lost their interest in the subject matter that causes them to perform lease in the class. Once the learner fined interest in the subject matter they could also perform well in the class just as the other students.

3. Describe the methods used by the teacher in handling the students’ differences in abilities. How did the students respond to the teacher?

Teacher used collaborate approach in handling the students differences in abilities. She used it for the pupils have the chance to share ideas with the other classmates to improve their speaking ability and self-confidence. The students respond the teacher by participating in the activity.

REFLECTIONS

1. Recall the time when you were in the elementary or high school. Recall the high and low achievers in your class. How did your teacher deal with differences in abilities? Was your teacher effective?

As what I could remember when I was still in high school most of the high achievers are those who came from a good educational background or those students who studied their elementary years in SPC. While others including me, the ones who came from a public elementary school are the low achievers. It’s hard for us to cope up with the lesson that is being discussed. However differences are not very noticeable because the teachers provided an avenue for us to cope up with the other students. With these, I could say that my teachers were effective because I was able to learn in the way she\he teaches us.

2. With the principle of individual differences in mind, what methods and strategies will you remember in the future to ensure that you will be able to meet the needs of both the high and low-achievers in your class.

With the principle of individual differences in mind, I would promote the strategy of teaching in which learning is an active process. In a classroom setting, no learner is the same with the others. Every individual is unique and has different ways to learn. As a teacher I would allow my students to learn in their own natural ways because as a teacher it is my responsibility to guide my students in areas where they could learn best. Most importantly, I would have to keep in mind that I am educating my students not indoctrinating them.

Lastly, I should also spend some time to get to know my students. To get to know what they are so passionate about and on how do they think they can learn best. This is because I believe that knowing my students will allow me to identify their learning needs and help them achieve in the highest level.
