Dear Colleague:It has been my pleasure to have worked with OT practitioners, educators and students across the United States. As an Occupational Therapist who continues to work in schools and has for over 25 years, I know firsthand the powerful impact we can have on students who struggle in school. We have the unique expertise and the tools necessary to greatly increase student success in learning and in daily functioning. Like you, I know the importance of making a difference for the students who lack visual perceptual and functional vision skills. As I strive to develop OT services across different schools, I have found many techniques and activities that can be used to address these challenges and I’m excited to share these with you.

In our day together, we will explore a variety of visual strategies that I use to address environmental barriers in our classrooms for students with poor functional visual skills. We will identify the difference between eyesight and vision along with current research on how to increase learning for these students. I will share visual perceptual challenges our students face during the active participation activities that are the hallmark of all my presentations, and explore whole class activities I have found to work most successfully.

Come laugh, move and learn as I share many practical visual strategies to increase a student’s ability to learn, maintain attention and get organized. We will also discuss ways you can strengthen communication among your team members and promote collaboration within classrooms. I am passionate about building successful education teams that address the highly challenging curricular demands of what we now call, “College and Career Readiness Anchor Standards of the Common Core State Standards.” I look forward to collaborating with you!
